Students get 'fix' at Buzzcotti | ESU Bulletin

Caffeine-starved Emporia State students have a new place to get their fix. Buzzcotti, a coffee shop located in the main street area of the Memorial Union is officially open.

Ashley Johnson, freshman music education major, said she enjoys having the shop in the union because ?it?s right here by where you can study, so it?s kind of convenient.?

Johnson used her hornet card to purchase a frappucino at the discounted price of $1.35. Without the discount, the drink would have been around $4.

While the shop may have only opened recently, the idea behind Buzzcotti has been in the works for years, said Dave Hendricks, director of the Memorial Union.

Originally, the plan was for a ?grab and go? style store, which would have specialized in pre-packaged foods and bottled drinks in order to alleviate congestion at the Hornet Express.

However, after the opening of the Hornet Express, union workers researched food and drink sales and it was decided to change the concept to a coffee shop using the Starbucks coffee equipment that had previously been in the library.

?Throughout all of the planning (and) before we actually started construction, there were a lot of comments about coffee shops and that kind of atmosphere,? Hendricks said.

Hendricks said he had heard students talking about wanting a Starbucks or a coffee shop of some kind. He also said that having a shop like Buzzcotti helps to offset student costs in order to save money for students.

Jeff Cramer, senior secondary education major, said he finds Buzzcotti to be helpful to him for his unique lifestyle as a commuter. Cramer commutes to ESU from Lawrence.

?I?m drinking coffee the whole day to get ready for my hour drive, so for me especially it helped out,? Cramer said.

When asked about the quality and the prices at Buzzcotti, Cramer said that he felt they were ?normal? although he said that the selection wasn?t as great as it might be at other similar shops.

Buzzcotti is open from 6:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on weekdays and offers many kinds of Starbucks brand coffee, although, according to Hendricks, they cannot sell Starbucks? seasonal beverages.
