What' s Home Maintenance Have To Do With Your Business?

?

Saturday 8:30 at night and the A/C goes out. Isn?t that when it always happens? Thankfully, we?re able to get somebody out the next day and it?s an easy fix. Actually, it could have been avoided if we had just done a little bit of maintenance on our part. Something as simple as pouring a little cleanser down a pipe twice a year.

As soon as our A/C guy said it, I realized he?s told me the same thing every summer when he comes out. After he leaves, I get to thinking about our home and everything it needs. That snowballs into comparing home maintenance to that of a business.

Routine Tasks

Some tasks are routine. There?s no real skill that is required for these. Sweeping the floors, cleaning the counters, etc. It?s almost robotic in the way that we take care of them. And if you neglect them, it?s quickly noticeable.

Squeaky Wheel Tasks

These are the ones that require some skill or just a pain in the butt to take care of. Fixing that leaky faucet, mowing the yard or, for me, it?s weed whacking. I call these the ?squeaky wheel? because you can try to ignore them ?but, eventually, it becomes easier to deal with them. Or call somebody else to take care of it.

Forgotten Child

Then there are the out of sight out of mind items. I don?t look at my rain gutters every day. I take my working A/C for granted. As I?m coming into the house and I see the gutters need cleaning out I think ?Oh yeah, I gotta take care of that? and then I go inside and go about my day. It?s easy to forget about these until it?s broken. The signs are there but since they?re not immediate, you forget.

Maintenance

Taking care of your business is just like taking care of your home. There are the daily things you do, the squeaky wheels and then the forgotten. Neglect your home and your A/C quits working and cracks in the wall start appearing. For your business, those cracks are sales slowing down. Customers start going elsewhere. You?ve invested a lot of blood, sweat and tears into it. Now is not the time to put things off.

But it takes effort to keep all the parts running smoothly, especially if you?re trying to do it all yourself. In your home, you probably have some help. You hire experts. Lawn care service. A cleaning lady. You have somebody come in and do a maintenance check on the heating and air. Pest control. But are you doing the same for your business? You hired someone to set up your website and social media pages but who is maintaining them? You know how much email marketing helps but are you doing anything about it? Quit putting those things off and hire some experts to accomplish them for you.

Take care of your business and it will take care of you.

High dolphin deaths in Gulf of Mexico due to oil spill and other environmental factors

ScienceDaily (July 18, 2012) ? The largest oil spill on open water to date and other environmental factors led to the historically high number of dolphin deaths in the Gulf of Mexico, concludes a two-year scientific study released July 19.

A team of biologists from several Gulf of Mexico institutions and the University of Central Florida in Orlando published their findings in the journal PLoS ONE.

For the past two years, scientists have been trying to figure out why there were a high number of dolphin deaths, part of what's called an "unusual mortality event" along the northern Gulf of Mexico.

Most troubling to scientists was the exceptionally high number of young dolphins that made up close to half of the 186 dolphins that washed ashore from Louisiana to western Florida from January to April 2011. The number of "perinatal" (near birth) dolphins stranded during this four-month period was six times higher than the average number of perinatal strandings in the region since 2003 and nearly double the historical percentage of all strandings.

"Unfortunately it was a 'perfect storm' that led to the dolphin deaths," said Graham Worthy, a UCF provosts distinguished professor of biology and co-author of the study. "The oil spill and cold winter of 2010 had already put significant stress on their food resources, resulting in poor body condition and depressed immune response. It appears the high volumes of cold freshwater coming from snowmelt water that pushed through Mobile Bay and Mississippi Sound in 2011 was the final blow."

The cold winter of 2010 was followed by the historic BP Deepwater Horizon disaster in April 2010, which dumped millions of gallons of oil into the Gulf of Mexico, likely disrupting the food chain. This was in the middle of the dolphins' breeding season. A sudden entry of high volumes of cold freshwater from Mobile Bay in 2011 imposed additional stress on the ecosystem and specifically on dolphins that were already in poor body condition.

"When we put the pieces together, it appears that the dolphins were likely weakened by depleted food resources, bacteria, or other factors as a result of the 2010 cold winter or oil spill, which made them susceptible to assault by the high volumes of cold freshwater coming from land in 2011 and resulted in distinct patterns in when and where they washed ashore," said Ruth Carmichael, a senior marine scientist at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab, an assistant professor of Marine Sciences at the University of South Alabama and the lead author of the study.

The majority of perinatal strandings were centered on the Mississippi-Alabama coast, adjacent to Mobile Bay, the 4th largest freshwater drainage in the U.S. The onshore movement of surface currents during the same period resulted in animals washing ashore along the stretch of coastline where freshwater discharge was most intense.

Others who contributed to the study include: William M. Graham and Stephan Howden from the University of Southern Mississippi, Stennis Space Center and Allen Aven from the Dauphin Island Sea Lab and the University of South Alabama.

Worthy is the Hubbs Professor of Marine Mammalogy. He received his PhD in 1986 from the University of Guelph in Canada and then completed post-doctoral training at the University of California at Santa Cruz, where he studied elephant seals, bottlenose dolphins and California sea lions. He spent 11 years as a faculty member in the Department of Marine Biology at Texas A&M University at Galveston and served as the State Coordinator for the Texas Marine Mammal Stranding Network.

Worthy and his team at UCF have been studying dolphin populations in the Pensacola and Choctawhatchee bays for years.

{ ::Simplyvonne:: }: Happy Retirement To My Parents!

Blog post dedicated to my parents on their retirement!

Dad with my niece, Vivian

Mom with Kaylee

Mom and the girls of the family

With my sisters and and sister in law

With sister and Niece

Two babies of the family

What we call our home now wasn?t easy to begin with. My father was taken away from our family to a concentration camp where he was tortured and punished by the communist during the Vietnam War. Since my father scarified for his country we had the opportunity to go overseas and start a new life in America, the land of new opportunities.

My?oldest sister was left behind with her family in Vietnam and was not able to start a new journey with the rest of our family because her husband and children were not allowed to come. My parents envisioned a new beginning and to achieve a life that they have always dreamt of.

In 2008, our family was reunited again. My oldest sister made a journey for herself to start a new life with her children and husband in America.?

It?s been two decades since our family made the biggest decision to start a new life. My parents didn?t know English, but was able to find jobs that paid enough to have a sustainable life.

Service jobs that paid little, but required a lot of work, my parents stuck it through to give their children a life that they never had. They wanted their kids to live out their dreams and accomplish goals and to have success.?20 years have passed that they have solely been dedicated to their children. New things were foreign to them just so they can give their kids a new set of clothes for school. Until this day they would do anything for their children.

My parents recently retired from their jobs and now able to fulfill a peaceful life of no worries. The kids are grown now and are so thankful for everything. Now it?s our turn to take care of them.

Happy retirement to my parents, thank you for everything you have done for us!

Apple?s Early iPad Prototype Had 12-Inch Screen, Was 3 Times Thicker Than iPad 2

Apple?s Early iPad Prototype Had 12-Inch Screen, Was 3 Times Thicker Than iPad 2

This early iPad prototype was a mammoth.

Remember that early iPad prototype we showed you yesterday, built between 2002 and 2004, which looked like an old white iBook with a touchscreen? Now some new shots have surfaced that show a comparison between this and the iPad 2, and there are some interesting differences.

First of all, Apple originally built the iPad with a 12-inch display, and it was huge.

Not only did the old prototype look a lot like an iBook, it was almost as big as one, too. According to BuzzFeed, its display measures just under 12 inches diagonally, making it 40% larger than the 9.7-inch display Apple eventually shipped on the iPads we have today.

Apple?s Early iPad Prototype Had 12-Inch Screen, Was 3 Times Thicker Than iPad 2

It also features a 4:3 aspect ratio like the iBooks that were shipping at the same time.

The prototype also measures just under 1 inches thick, making it almost 3 times as thick as the iPad 2, and only around 0.35 inches thicker than the iBook.

Apple?s Early iPad Prototype Had 12-Inch Screen, Was 3 Times Thicker Than iPad 2

Like the iPad we have today, this prototype had very few buttons and ports. It has a dock connector and headphone jack, but there?s no home button, or any other physical controls to speak of.

Thankfully, technology has come a long way since this iPad prototype was produced, enabling Apple to build sleek, (relatively) lightweight devices that we can comfortably carry in one hand, or slip into our bags.

Report: Canada Looks to Archive Tweets, Other Social Media

There?s no Dewey Decimal system for the Internet, as Canadian archivists are discovering.

The Vancouver Sun reports that in an attempt to bring retrieval of all things Canadian to modern times, the Library and Archives Canada agency is looking for a way to archive tweets, blogs, and other online documents.

But it?s a difficult task.
?
"Any kind of historical record would be entirely incomplete without having some record of YouTube or the blogosphere or Twitter," Greg Elmer, director of the Centre for the Study of Social Media at Ryerson University in Toronto, told the Sun. "We simply don't have access to the means by which information is stored, indexed and formatted on YouTube or Twitter. It makes it an unreliable way of archiving information.?

Library and Archives Canada, the nation?s national library, houses nearly 3.2 million megabytes of information in electronic formats, as well as 21 million photographs, 270,000 hours of video and sound recordings, and much more.

In 2010, the U.S. Library of Congress announced it would archive every tweet since 2006 and onward, striking a deal with Twitter to receive all public tweets ever recorded. But U.S. officials admit it?s been a difficult project.

The hurdle of manually archiving the non-stop stream of online information is a modern problem, and most archival institutions have not yet caught up to modern technology, Elmer said.
