52 Weeks of Abundant Genealogy - Week 30

Week 30: Genealogy Serendipity.?Every genealogist has tales of surprise findings or coincidences when climbing the family tree. What is your most memorable serendipitous discovery? Did it involve ancestors in your tree, living folks or both? How did this surprise affect your research and does it still impact you today?

I already had a lot of information on my family tree when I began researching seriously and in depth, but almost nothing on my husband's family. ?Helping to clean out his parents' home after they died and discovering some many interesting letters and documents, led me to really begin the journey. ?Our families had arrived in Arkansas by very divergent paths.

As I delved deeper into the past, I discovered that our families had lived near each other in Missouri before the Civil War and that both had arrived there from Kentucky. ?The trail led eventually led back to the same county - Goochland - in Virginia and the families had some of the same neighbors. ?I often teased my husband that we were cousins.

His 4th great grandmother was Ann "Nancy" Johnson who married William Haden, 1775, Goochland, and recorded by the local Anglican minister, Rev. William Douglas - now transcribed in the book known as?The Douglas Register. ?She was baptized same place, so I also knew her parents names, Joseph Johnson and Sarah Harris. ?In the baptism record she was listed as Ann - the marriage record had Nancy. ?I had Haden family information showing either name. ? A third party put me in touch with a longtime Johnson researcher who had considered the infant Ann to be a mystery - he wasn't sure she had lived to grow up. ?I assured him she was the bride "Nancy" - he was little embarrassed to have missed that as he had noted the marriage record early in his research, likely before he knew Nancy was the common nickname for Ann. ?He was thrilled to have this little problem solved.

However, the researcher also knew and shared the name of Ann Johnson's paternal grandmother - and had the paper trail - and she was Mary Pledge, wife of John Johnson. ?As soon as I saw the Pledge surname I knew. ?I was going to discover that I had married my distant cousin. ?And I found it - Mary Pledge was a sister to my 7th great grandfather, William Pledge.

It's probably been 15 years since I made this connection. ?My husband, my best friend, and my cousin and I were married 45 years before he passed away in 2004. ?Sometimes I think this one find was worth every hour and every penny pored into genealogical research over the past 20 years!

WHY WE SHOULDN'T RAISE PROPERTY TAXES IN REDMOND ...

This?Letter from Redmond Councilmember Hank Myers (truncated by Yoder)?was published in the?Redmond Reporter's July 20th edition (this weekend).??The Letter?wasn't published?in Reporter's online edition:? www.Redmond-Reporter.com.? WHY WE SHOULDN?T RAISE PROPERTY TAXES IN REDMOND NEXT BUDGET, By Councilmember Hank Myers,? Redmond Reporter, 7/21/2012

At Tuesday night?s City Council Meeting, Finance Director Mike Bailey outlined the state of the current Redmond budget as we passed the 75% mark of the biennial period. The highlights are that Redmond?s cash on hand position is $9.5 million better than projected for this point in time. Even excluding a $4.0 million sales tax special payment from the State, we are still well over $5.0 ahead of our own projections. This strong cash position is due to our recovering sales tax revenue, as well as property tax collections that are about $1.5 million better than projected. On the expenditure side, Mayor Marchione and his Director team are under-spending the budget by 7.63% (compared to 7.08% last quarter). The City Council is the most frugal department, under-spending its budget by over 23.5%.

Last week Mr. Bailey presented an analysis of overall economic trends which show a strengthening recovery, particularly locally. If sales taxes follow the economic trends, we should see significant improvement in our single largest revenue source. Unlike other cities in our area, Redmond continued to raise property taxes in each of the last four years of the great recession. In dollar terms it is not a big amount, but it is not the only tax increases our residents have had to pay, and it came during a time when real income was declining.

Looking at all this, there are three excellent reasons why we should not raise property taxes in the next budget.

First, we don?t need the added revenue. We are looking at a budget-end cash surplus approaching $12 million. This is the third cash surplus in three budgets. At the end of the last budget we added a new multi-million dollar reserve fund that puts our reserve capacity well above city averages in our state. At the end of 2008 we created an innovation fund to encourage more efficient service delivery out of that surplus. By contrast, increasing property taxes the allowed 1% raises just under a million dollars for the biennium. Our residents rate city service delivery at impressively high levels. Conservatism is a laudable virtue in budgeting, second only to accuracy.

Next, how a government considers its citizens is vital. Except for a small amount of development services, all of the general fund revenue comes from taxing the productivity of the community. There are easy rationalizations for tax increases: ?it?s not a lot of money? or ?other governments are raising taxes more?. The bottom line is that any government that puts its own needs ahead of those of its citizens is not worthy. Besides, the property tax is the only general tax within the direct control of the city.

Third, the budget will be structurally balanced without a tax increase. We did not need the property tax increase in the current budget to assure a six-year structurally balanced budget, nor did we need it in the previous one. The question is how do we use our current surplus to create the most sustainable benefits for our residents? We have spent the last two surpluses creating innovation funds and super-safe reserve levels. Now is the time to use our surplus outside of city hall, almost literally putting it on the streets for the benefit of everyone.

My suggestion is....(please read the newspaper edition for Mr. Myers's?closing remarks).?

New penalties under Texas wage-theft law? - Business ...

Q. I heard that a new law allows criminal prosecution of employers that commit ?wage theft.? Is it true?

A. Yes. In an attempt to reduce wage theft, the Texas Legislature altered the Texas Penal Code earlier this year. The new law?known as the Wage Theft Law?closed a loophole that allowed employers that failed to pay workers for their services and time to merely pay a fraction of what they owe an employee.

The law?Gov. Rick Perry signed it last year?clarifies that employers that fail to pay their employees can be charged with criminal theft of service.

Moreover, the new law expands the ability of local law enforcement agencies to arrest employers that cheat their workers out of their pay.

?Ramadan Mubarak!?

Ramadan Mubarak everyone! Well, finally the day has arrived when all the Muslims fast and I did so too on Friday. But it was really hard for me. I didn?t know that they don?t open the dining hall early in the morning and I just found out the night before right before the retiring time (at 11 pm when all the students are supposed to go to bed). We Cilley Muslim girls were horrified and five of us tried to gather food to eat at night. One of my dorm advisors was nice enough to give us some food to eat to survive the tough practice of fasting. And so early in the morning we ate the oatmeal bars and drank lots of water hoping that it would keep us alive till 8:18 pm when it?s time to break the fast. During the iftaar (when the fast is officially broken), the food that was served was delicious. There were lots of other Muslims I got to know there too. There were students from Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Emirates, Palestine, Egypt, Lebanon and even surprisingly Muslim students from Italy and France. I never expected Exeter to have so many Muslim students. Talking about religion reminds me that I went to a Catholic church last Sunday. As it was my first time in a Catholic church, during the mass, I was really amazed by the melodious hymns and prayers.

Speaking of prayers, I badly need people to pray for me so that I get a good grade on my first drawing project. So far, we have learned using pencils, charcoal and sketch pencils but now we have moved on to using pastel colored pencils. Now we are learning to play with color and add life to our pictures with it. And in my creative writing class, we have now started writing stories and create fiction. And last but not the least: my electronics class is going as usual. We finally figured out that if there is danger then the power box has a red light that will glow brightly to warn us. So the class is going smoothly, with more red, green and blue LEDs lighting up every day, and no more fires.

The most exciting thing that happened this week is of course the dance party that happened tonight. I danced a lot in my 1.5 inches high heels and my legs hurt a lot. Even in the air-conditioned room, we were sweating like pigs because of dancing so much. Well with this good note, I am going to finish my blog post. Oh, and one more thing, we are going to Massachusetts tomorrow! I am going to board a train for the first time in the U.S. We will go to visit the Asian University for Women Support Foundation, have lunch with them and take a tour of Harvard University and around Boston. I can?t wait for tomorrow! See you all next and, sadly, the second-to-last week.

?All of us here in the Exeter summer program came from diverse backgrounds and languages, and in these three weeks have made such good friendships that it?s hard to believe only a couple weeks are left.?

At this moment, I wish I had the powers to hold these days back and live them forever. All of us students here in the Exeter summer program came from diverse backgrounds and languages, and in these three weeks have made such good friendships that it?s hard to believe only a couple weeks are left. This week small and exciting things happened. I especially liked the enthusiasm among the Muslim students here to fast despite all the big challenges of staying without food and water for more than sixteen hours.

Finally this week ended with a blast dance party, and I have just been back from it. It was fun to see girls worrying about their dresses from a week ahead and asking around of people what they are gonna wear. I also joined them and went to several of my friends? rooms to see their dresses, and they all were so pretty. But! The funniest thing is that most of them were wearing different dresses than they showed me. Girls were looking so much different that for a few, I had hard time to recognize them. All of the upper school kids were together and it was a great opportunity to make new friends. I had lots of fun, though I am exhausted now.

Mercy and I are looking forward to meeting Ms. Katsuki tomorrow; she is one of the friends of AUW and she works for them in Boston. We will go with her to visit Harvard and probably see Mr. Kamal?s house. Tomorrow we have to wake up really early and catch the train at 7:17 a.m. We will travel by ourselves for the first time in the U.S, and will be back by 6:00 p.m. I hope it would be a fun day and I will share the experiences next week.

Correction: Bulgaria-Israelis Attacked story

JERUSALEM - In a story July 20 that noted Bulgarian authorities had ruled out former Guantanamo detainee Mehdi Ghezali as the bomber in an attack against Israelis, The Associated Press erroneously reported that authorities had earlier identified him as a suspect. Ghezali had been named in media reports, not by Bulgarian authorities.

A corrected version of the story is below:

Israelis bury 5 victims of Bulgaria attack

Israelis bury 5 victims of Bulgaria bombing as investigators struggle to identify attacker

By ARON HELLER

Associated Press

Devastated mourners grasped at dirt atop fresh graves and screamed in agony Friday as they buried the five Israeli victims of a bombing in Bulgaria ? an attack that Israel has blamed on Iran and its proxy group Hezbollah.

Two days after the deadly blast in a popular vacation spot, investigators in Bulgaria and in several other countries were still struggling to confirm the attacker's identity.

Bulgarian prosecutors said the attacker had short hair, not the long hair seen in the security video footage captured of him at the airport. A witness said he appeared to be wearing a wig.

The victims' coffins were received early Friday in a military ceremony at Israel's international airport. Seventeen Israelis remain in hospitals.

Childhood friends Itzik Kolengi, 28, and Amir Menashe, 27, were buried in the central Israeli town of Petah Tikva.

Kolengi's wife, Gilat, was wounded in the attack and remains hospitalized. The couple has an infant daughter.

"I promise you that the family and I will watch forever over your wife, Gilat, and your amazing daughter, Noya, who looks exactly like you, and we'll raise her just as you would have wanted," Kolengi's brother David said during his eulogy.

Menashe's wife, who was also wounded in the attack, attended the funeral in a wheelchair. They too have an infant son.

Nearby, in Rishon Lezion, hundreds of mourners joined the family of Cochava Shriki, a 42-year-old woman who had recently become pregnant after years of fertility treatments.

In the northern Israeli town of Acre, Maor Harush, 26, and his close friend Elior Price, 24, were laid to rest. A third friend remains hospitalized in serious condition.

Israeli and American officials have blamed the Iran-backed Lebanese militant group Hezbollah for Wednesday's bombing, which killed five vacationing Israelis, along with a Bulgarian bus driver and the attacker, in the Black Sea resort town of Burgas.

In TV interviews Friday, Defence Minister Ehud Barak said he was certain who carried it out.

"Hezbollah is behind the attack, it was part of a series of attacks," he told Israel's Channel 2 TV. "We know that Iran is behind it all. What we don't know is who the actual man is."

Iran denied responsibility for the attack, which threatened to further escalate a shadow war between the two countries over allegations that Tehran is trying to build nuclear weapons. Iran says its atomic program is for peaceful purposes only.

Security camera footage from before the attack showed the suspected bomber wandering in and out of the terminal, wearing a baseball cap over long hair, a T-shirt and plaid shorts, with a bulky backpack.

Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov told reporters the bomb was in the backpack and detonated in the luggage compartment of the bus. The bomber was believed to have been about 36 years old and had been in the country between four to seven days, he said.

He later said in an interview with state TV that the blast was caused by 3 kilograms (6.6 pounds) of TNT powder.

Bulgarian prosecutors said the man tried to rent a car in the days before the bombing but was turned down because his ID appeared suspicious. Authorities have examined his fingerprints, his DNA and his fake Michigan driver's license.

They also said the man actually had short hair. It was not clear if he was wearing a wig, or if he had a haircut after the airport footage was taken.

Afrodita Petrova, the owner of the car rental company, told Bulgarian National TV that the suspect had short dark hair when visiting the office. She said he was the same person from the video camera footage and appeared to be wearing a wig.

"He spoke English with an Arab accent," she said.

Tsvetanov said the investigation had ruled out that the bomber was a Bulgarian citizen, but did not say how authorities know that. He said the investigation had also ruled out that the bomber was Mehdi Ghezali, a Swedish citizen and former Guantanamo detainee who had been mentioned in media reports.

"Now we are focused on finding out the identity of the suicide bomber and his possible whereabouts ahead of the blast," Tsvetanov said.

Police and prosecutors refused to give any more information, saying it would compromise the ongoing investigation.

Israel has attributed a series of attacks on its citizens around the world in recent months to Iran and its proxies.

The Islamic militant group has not commented on the attack.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast called the accusation "baseless."

The U.S. intelligence community has a "high degree of confidence that this was carried out by Hezbollah," presumably by a cell located in Bulgaria, said an official who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss intelligence matters. "This was researched and target was prepped," the official said, hallmarks of the discipline and expertise of the group.

However, Pentagon press secretary George Little said Friday the U.S. government has not established with certainty who was behind the attack.

"The attack does bear some of the hallmarks of Hezbollah, but we are not in a position to make any final determination," Little said. He declined to say what aspect of the attack resembled the methods or other features of Hezbollah.

Israel has officially issued a complaint with the U.N. Security Council, accusing Iran of responsibility for the attack. Israeli representative Haim Waxman wrote the Security Council president that the attack in Bulgaria was part of an international terrorist campaign against Israelis and Jews worldwide, led by Iran and Hezbollah.

Sensational salads | Ottawa Citizen Style

Tomato, grilled zucchini and bocconcini salad as as simple to make as it is elegant to behold.

I?ve been to many a summer party where, when I asked the host what I could bring, they said: ?How about a salad?? I?ve also been the host of a party making that request.

It?s a logical thing to do. Quite often, if it?s a casual event the host will whip up the main dish. It might be baked and chilled salmon, burgers, steaks, chicken or some other creation ? things that won?t clash with a few different types of salad on the plate.

Some people have a go-to salad that they love making. Others like to switch things up and make a new creation each time.

I have my feet in both camps.

I do have salads I enjoy making over and over again, such as potato salad, which so many people enjoy. Today?s recipe is called creamy old-style red-skinned potato salad. I call it old-style because it?s rich with mayonnaise and is flecked with hard-boiled egg and chopped pickle, things my late mother used to mix into her potato salad.

Over the years, I?ve also made all kinds of rice salads. In today?s recipe, I dressed it up Caribbean-style by adding beans, aromatic spices, citrus juice and a mix of vegetables.

Other times, I?ll tweak a salad I?ve made before, such as a simple but always well-received tomato and bocconcini cheese salad. I did that in today?s recipe by adding some grilled slices of zucchini, a vegetable always plentiful in the summer.

As for a new-to-me salad, I used a very old food that?s popular again as the base: quinoa, the ancient grain of the Incas. When cooking it in water until tender, I added some curry powder, which infused the quinoa with a wonderful flavour and gave it a golden colour. Once it?s cooled, I toss the quinoa with cooked and cooled cubes of yams, dried cranberries, almonds and other flavour-building ingredients.

All of today?s great-to-bring-to-a-potluck salads serve 12, or maybe more, depending on how many other salads adorn the table. The potato, rice and quinoa salads can all be prepared a few hours before needed. The elements of the tomato, zucchini and bocconcini salad could be sliced and grilled in advance. However, for the best look, assemble that salad close to serving time.

If you?re transporting a salad to a party, be sure to put it into an ice-cold cooler to keep it at a food-safe temperature.

Tomato, Grilled Zucchini and Bocconcini Salad

This colourful summer salad is simply but tastily dressed with good olive oil and tangy balsamic vinegar.

Preparation time: 25 minutes

Cooking time: 2 to 3 minutes

Serves 12

  • 24 (1/2-inch/12-mm thick) slices ripe tomato (about 4 to 6 tomatoes, depending on size)
  • 24 (1/2-inch/12 mm thick) slices zucchini (about 2 small-to-medium zucchini)
  • 1 tablespoon (15 mL) extra-virgin olive oil
  • 6 bocconcini cheese balls, each cut into 4 slices (see note, below)
  • 24 small leaves or sprigs of fresh oregano or basil
  • Balsamic vinegar and extra-virgin olive oil, to taste
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Preheat barbecue or indoor grill to medium-high. Place the zucchini and 1 tablespoon (15 mL) oil in a bowl and toss to combine. Grill the zucchini 1 to 1 1/2 minutes per side, or until nicely coloured and just tender. Set on a baking sheet and cool to room temperature.

On a large serving platter, arrange zucchini, cheese and tomatoes in a slightly overlapping spiral. Top with basil or oregano. Drizzle salad, to taste, with balsamic vinegar and olive oil; sprinkle with salt and pepper. Let salad sit 5 to 10 minutes to allow flavours to meld before serving.

Note: Bocconcini cheese sold in tubs or in bulk is available in the deli section of most supermarkets.

Curried Quinoa Salad with Yam, Almonds and Dried Cranberries

Nutritious quinoa, simmered and infused with the taste of curry powder, then cooled and tossed with nuts, dried fruit and brightly coloured vegetables.

Preparation time: 25 minutes

Cooking time: About 20 minutes

Serves 12

  • 1 1/2 cups (375 mL) quinoa (see note)
  • 2 teaspoons (10 mL) mild curry powder
  • 2 3/4 cups (625 mL) water
  • 1 small to medium yam, peeled and cut into 1/4- to 1/2-inch (6- to 12-mm) cubes
  • 1/4 cup (50 mL) fresh lime juice
  • 1/4 cup (50 mL) vegetable oil
  • 2 tablespoons (25 mL) honey
  • Salt, to taste
  • 3/4 cup (175 mL) dried cranberries
  • 3/4 cup (175 mL) whole skin-on almonds
  • 30 snap peas, each cut into 3 slices, blanched (see note)
  • 1/4 cup (50 mL) chopped fresh mint

Place the quinoa, curry powder and water in a medium-sized pot and bring to a boil. Cover the pot, lower the heat to medium-low, and cook, undisturbed, 15 minutes, or until the quinoa is tender and the water has evaporated. Spoon the quinoa onto a wide plate and cool to room temperature.

While quinoa cools, place the cubed yam in a pot and cover with cold water. Simmer the yams until just tender, about 5 minutes. (Do not overcook or they?ll break apart in the salad.) Drain yams well, cool in cold water and drain again.

When quinoa is cool, place the lime juice, oil, honey and salt in a salad bowl and mix to combine. Add quinoa, cranberries, almonds, snap peas and mint and toss to combine. Cover and refrigerate salad until needed. Can be made a few hours before needed. Gently toss salad again before serving.

Note: Quinoa is sold in bags or in bulk at most supermarkets. To blanch snap peas, plunge in boiling water for 30 seconds. Drain well, cool in ice-cold water, drain well again, and they are ready to use.

Creamy Old-style Red-skinned Potato Salad

A classic, creamy potato salad accented with egg, mustard and pickles. Serve it alongside anything cooked on the barbecue.

Preparation time: 20 minutes

Cooking time: About 10 minutes

Serves 12

  • 2 pounds (900 g) miniature red-skinned potatoes, quartered and rinsed well
  • 2/3 to 1 cup (up to 250 mL) mayonnaise
  • 3 tablespoons (50 mL) sour cream
  • 2 tablespoons (25 mL) cider vinegar
  • 3 tablespoons (50 mL) whole-grain Dijon mustard (see note)
  • Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 small carrot, grated
  • 3 green onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 large dill pickle, finely chopped
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • 3 to 4 large hard-boiled eggs, halved and sliced

Place potatoes in a pot and cover with 2 inches (5 cm) of cold water. Bring to a gentle boil and cook until potatoes are tender, but still holding their shape, about 8 to 10 minutes. Drain potatoes well, spread onto a wide plate and cool to room temperature.

Place the mayonnaise, sour cream, vinegar, mustard and Worcestershire to taste in a large bowl and mix to combine. Add potatoes, carrot, green onion, pickle, salt, pepper and three-quarters each of the egg and green onion. Gently toss salad to combine. Cover and refrigerate salad until needed. When you?re ready to serve, transfer to a decorative bowl, garnish the top of the salad with remaining egg and green onion, and serve.

Note: Coarser whole-grain Dijon mustard, sometimes called country- or old-style, is sold alongside the smooth Dijon at most supermarkets.

Caribbean-style Rice and Black Bean Salad

Rice salad dressed up Caribbean-style, by adding beans, spices, citrus juice and mix of vegetables.

Preparation time: 20 minutes

Cooking time: 15 minutes

Serves 12

  • 1 cup (250 mL) long white rice
  • 1 1/2 cups (375 mL) water
  • 1/4 cup (50 mL) olive oil
  • 3 tablespoons (50 mL) freshly squeezed lime juice
  • 2 tablespoons (25 mL) orange juice
  • 2 tablespoons (25 mL) brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons (10 mL) ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon (5 mL) chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon (2.5 mL) paprika
  • Pinch, ground cloves
  • 2 teaspoons (10 mL) hot pepper sauce, such as Tabasco
  • Salt, to taste
  • One 19-ounce (540 mL) can black beans, drained well, rinsed, and drained well gain
  • 1/3 cup (75 mL) chopped fresh cilantro
  • 1 medium red bell pepper, diced
  • 1/2 medium white onion, diced
  • 1 cup (250 mL) frozen or fresh corn kernels

Place rice and water in small- to medium-sized pot. Bring to a boil and then cover, reduce heat to its lowest setting and steam rice until tender, about 15 minutes. Spread rice on wide plate and cool to room temperature.

Place the oil, citrus juices, honey, spices, hot sauce and salt in salad bowl. Add the rice and all remaining ingredients and toss to combine. Cover and refrigerate salad until needed. Can be made a few hours before needed. Gently toss salad again before serving.

The next seven pages in the storybook that they don't tell you - Blogs

Original post here from 9/15/2009

You took a chance and drove 600 miles to meet me

You showed me the ocean for the first time in my life, and watched me become a child in the surf

I felt so fat that day. You didn?t tell me what your parents were saying, only that they were saying things about me in front of me. It wasn?t until later that you told me that your dad said I was fat, short, and the bridge of my nose meant I?d be a bad wife. You ?didn?t want? to tell me, but you did. You clung to me like a leech, but you never would tell me, you never could ?remember? what they were saying in Korean in front of me.?

You introduced me to Mexico. You saw what it means when I get DRUUUUNK as I drank all the tequila in Mexico.

You should have protected me from that creep. I could have been seriously hurt.?

The first time I cried in front of you, really cried, was when I was so drunk, vomiting in the hotel bathroom, and for some reason, desperately missing my dead brother. You recently told me that you consider crying to be weak. You never told me that, but I always felt embarrassed and wrong when I showed emotion around you.

You inadvertently starved us the day you proposed. You planned the whole thing out and were nervous as hell the whole day. I knew it was coming, but it made me cry anyway.

It was ghetto as shit. You took me to your WORK. You ordered FISH and then KISSED me with FISH MOUTH. I ended up paying off the ring because you were too?irresponsible?to make the payments.

I kissed the man I loved at 12:00 on new year?s day

I didn?t quit smoking, and you continued to be silently resentful of me

We lived in an apartment with not much money. Doing nothing but be together entertained us.

Unrealized at the time, you were telling me the faults with all my friends, getting puppy dog sad if I wanted to hang out with them and not you. Eventually I lost touch with all of them

You gave me fancy gifts and threw a fun party with my friends. You even made your first cake

I was only allowed to see approved friends, only gay males if males attended, and only if you were there.

We saw another set of friends get married, and your speech at the wedding was so sweet. You also looked super hot in that tux

You barely spoke to me this day

We avoided your parents like the plague every time we went to California

Yet you defend them when it suits you, and hate them when it doesn?t

You became part of my family before we were even married. It just felt right that you were there at all the family activities

As with my friends, you would discuss on the way home all the things that were wrong with them but would be the perfect brother-in-law at the activities. You would mock how my siblings are raising their children, yet play with those children to get in their favor. You worked to make it so that they all love you far more than me. I could go on for hours about this one

Even though you were working TWO jobs, both with horrible schedules, you would come to my work with a big blanket, and we?d have a picnic on the grass on lunch.

Sometimes you did do sweet things. Mostly it was my idea. Mostly it was because you were a leech to me.

We knew how to be frugal, and we knew who our good friends were. We had a fun photo shoot to find our engagement picture

This particular good friend that took our engagement photos walked in and banged on our hotel room door the night I came to visit Hubs for the first time WHILE we were having sex. HE ANSWERED THE DOOR, and this particular friend took it upon himself to interrogate me about my sexual past, my family, and any personal question he could possibly think of while 4 or 5 other of Hubs? friends just SAT THERE AND LISTENED and Hubs just SAT THERE AND LISTENED never saying how incredibly inappropriate the timing was, or the fact that I was stuck under that blanket because I had no pants on.

This particular friend told Hubs not to speak to me any more recently. This particular friend said I was crazy. ?The worst kind.? This particular friend told my blocked scary rapist husband about the post I put on facebook letting people know that he had escalated to physical violence and rape, not just that but sent a screenshot. That night Hubs came to the house in the terrifying scary anger that he had those nights when I?m huddled in a corner asking please or shaking in the driveway or sleeping in front of my child?s bedroom. This friend laughed off that anger, that not possible anger from his sweet, naive friend. This particular friend has not heard from Hubs that he has admitted to myself and his therapist that it was rape, because Hubs is too much of a coward to admit that he?s not that sweet naive friend. He?s that sweet naive friend to everyone except his wife. His wife he abuses.?

This was the one we mailed out

This was the one we framed

This is the one that I burned, in its frame, along with hundreds of other pictures of him

We put on face masks to be pretty for our wedding

We haven?t done anything fun since that night probably

We both held back tears when the judge had us look out at all our family and friends there to support our marriage

Just look, Shane. Just look. I know you?ll read this. Just look at these pictures and the life you threw away. I refuse to make my blog private, move it, or edit it because it?s something you don?t want to see or read. Just look at what you threw away. Look at the woman you abused and tortured and demolished. Look at our faces. Look at our eyes.?

Our first kiss as man and wife was the best kiss of my life

He didn?t even notice when I didn?t kiss him back when he raped me.

It was an amazing day

Do you remember what you promised?

Look how you looked at me. Look how I looked at you.

This was the me that used to be. The one that laughed with her whole body. This is what you destroyed.

You had your amazing artist friend recreate with paint a photo that we both loved but had gotten cut off. What a great wedding gift

I hate this painting. I hate it. I want to burn it. I hate it. I hate it. I can?t bring myself to because such a talented artist did it but I hate it. I hate how happy we look. I hate that our infant son would stare at it for hours and smile. I hate it.

Our honeymoon was SO GHETTO and CHEAP and SO MUCH FUN. Yay Wendover!

The ONLY thing you were in charge of was the honeymoon. You planned it the night before the wedding, in your hotel room bachelor party playing games and drinking. You planned it for THE WRONG DAY, so we were a day early and had to switch rooms. But I went with it. I said someday he?ll get ADD meds. He forgot. It?s not that he DIDN?T CARE. It?s not that he?s THAT SELFISH

The infamous ?We look like we?re buttfucking? picture

Remember when you sodomized me? I do. You didn?t even know you were doing it because you ?can?t feel well with a condom.? Well, I will never forget that rape. I can feel it. I will feel it forever.?

You explored with me

You stopped doing that as soon as you stopped being the center of my world

We went on a proper honeymoon a year later and learned that you have to be a very heavy drinker to make an all inclusive resort worth the all inclusiveness

You know where I wanted to go? An Alaskan cruise. I have always, always wanted to go on an alaskan cruise. You know what I hate? Humidity. Guess what fucking Cancun has.?

You also showed me what real humidity is with this trip

You also watched the weather channel a lot. I mean a lot. You can?t fucking sit in a hotel room and not turn on a tv? There was never anything on but you ALWAYS had the TV on, even when I ASKED you to turn it off.

You were so fucking dissatisfied ALL THE TIME. I felt like I had to entertain you. I wanted to go out on the kayak and have fun, but you didn?t want me to go to far, you were mad that I could stay in and you fell out, you wouldn?t LET ME go out further and PLAY on my honeymoon. You gave me that ?look? every time I smoked, you got tired of pina coladas and that was somehow my fault. You set up a romantic dinner on the beach with SEAFOOD which I HATE. All the restaurants were geared to you and not to me, you got pissed if I wanted to sit by the pool or by the ocean and read. It was SO MUCH WORK TO KEEP YOU HAPPY on MY HONEYMOON

It was so romantic

You were pissed that all inclusive is not all inclusive and we had to pay extra money for shit. You were pissed that it rained when we went on the ?romantic? cruise. You made fun of the saxophone player, you didn?t want me to sit where I wanted on the boat because you were scared. You didn?t want to pay for the photo of us at dinner. You were SO FUCKING PISSED about the non-all inclusiveness of it it was ALL YOU TALKED about.?

And SO FUN

This was fun. I wanted to be dipped and dived but you were too scared. So?whatever you say goes.

We got pregnant

Because you were bored with our life

You took me on a trip to Seattle for my birthday and Valentine?s Day, and I had the first trimester tired?s. You were very accommodating with my severe fatigue, and we had such a great time seeing the sights

Oh my god I have such a beef with this. I wanted to go to Lagoon, I wanted to go to Seattle, I wanted to go camping I wanted to take all these trips and he didn?t do a single one of them until ALMOST too late. We never went to Lagoon because pregnant women can?t ride any ride. I was SO FUCKING TIRED and he bought these books of tickets of shit to do so I HAD to go or it would be a huge waste of time but I was so fucking tired all I wanted to do was sleep. We went camping when I was over EIGHT MONTHS PREGNANT. I asked and asked and asked and he never took me on dates, he never took me on trips, he never took me anywhere until it was incredibly uncomfortable for me, or never at all. And only out of guilt, really, right?

At thirty weeks along you took me on another trip, this time closer to home in St. George

At THIRTY FUCKING WEEKS. Do you have any idea how big my ankles were? And he never let me just lay around in the pool, he had all these THINGS to do. ROADTRIPS to take, because sitting in a car is great for swollen feet.?

Where we went to the creepy museum of animal death

And went on a lot of drives since my feet didn?t last long when walking

We had a baby shower

In which he took almost no pictures of the?attendees, nor any flattering pictures of me

And a baby shower

Where he complained SO MUCH about this family that let us into their home and hosted a party for us. He complained the entire way home and then some.?

And after a lot of work

We had a baby

I look forward to a million more pictures with you. Thank you for making such sweet memories with me.

Happy Two-yearary, Hubs. I love you with all my heart

You threw it all away.
