'Paparazzi on Mars' snap Curiosity parachuting

Thousands of humans weren't the only ones with eyes trained on NASA's newest Mars rover last night: One of the robot's orbiting relatives captured this lucky shot as Curiosity descended onto the Red Planet.

MSL-2.jpg

The HiRISE camera aboard NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter was in position to observe Curiosity as it plunged through the Martian atmosphere during its harrowing Entry, Descent and Landing phase, also called the "7 minutes of terror".

Seen about a minute before touchdown, Curiosity is still tucked into its backshell, part of the larger spacecraft that encased the rover during its roughly eight-month trek from Earth to Mars.?

The craft is attached to its 16-metre-wide supersonic parachute, which slowed Curiosity's descent speed from 400 metres per second to 80 metres per second in less than two minutes.

A closer cutout view of the spacecraft and its chute (above left) was processed to avoid saturation, presenting better detail.

Shortly after this picture was taken, Curiosity let go of the backshell and fired up its retrorockets, beginning a powered descent that would end in the innovative but risky Sky Crane manoevure, with the rover being lowered on cables to land wheels first near a Martian mountain.

This isn't the first time HiRISE has watched over a new arrival on Mars. In May 2008 the orbiting camera spied NASA's Phoenix lander parachuting toward the Red Planet's north polar region.

The angle of that shot made it seem as if Phoenix was headed into a large crater, although it actually touched down on smooth plains about 20 kilometres from the crater rim.?

HiRISE has also taken portraits of its predecessors, including the defunct rover Spirit and its still-operational twin, Opportunity.

"Guess you could consider us the closest thing to paparazzi on Mars," HiRISE team member Sarah Milkovich, of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, said in a NASA statement.

Still, getting a bead on Curiosity during its descent was not guaranteed. The HiRISE team had just one chance to get an image as Curiosity passed through the orbiter's field of view.?

"If HiRISE took the image one second before or one second after, we probably would be looking at an empty Martian landscape," says Milkovich.

Sales Training Companies Selecting the Appropriate Sales Training ...

SALES TRAINING COMPANIES ? DECIDING ON THE PERFECT SALES TRAINING COMPANY FOR YOUR BUSINESS

Picking the right sales training company in Skokie could be a hard task. Let?s face it, there are actually hundreds of sales training companies from which to choose in the Chicago area! Perhaps the initial ?cut? you?ll want to make would be to disqualify every one of the currently out of place salespeople who have put out their shingles as sales trainers. I?m sure they all have decent stories that explains why they were let go, but when you are thinking about investing some time, energy and profits of your company with a sales training company you had better search for something beyond a very good story.

What Do You Really Desire?

Looks like a plain enough question, unfortunately our experience lets us know many people searching for a sales training company have not really sat down, put pencil to paper and defined what their desired final outcomes are for the training involvement.

As for instance, are you wanting to inspire your sales force? Make them learn closing strategies? Assist them to manage their time? While all of these are valuable objectives, even combined they won?t help you get the true results that you may need. In reality, heading down this direction will likely to result in your joining the majority of sales managers and people who run businesses who spend money on their sales force only to later say:

?Sales training didn?t deliver the results!?

The Outcome You Really Need ? Measurable Changes in Selling Behaviors and Selling Results

Short-term ?event? type training and training that concentrates on just one or two approaches normally does not work because it is fundamentally flawed. Our experience and analysis have demonstrated to us how your sales team is unlikely to always implement even the best approaches or recommendations unless they have been part of a comprehensive behavioral enhancement plan.

Seek for Sales Training Companies that Require Long-Term Reinforcement and Coaching

Effective training has to be far more than an instructional occasion or maybe a number of events. It has to include things like skill application, progress measurement, feedback, optimization, and encouragement.

Building lasting selling growth needs to have behavioral adjustment and learning new techniques. This obviously does not occur instantly, over a weekend or even over a few weeks.

A great training company was made on the basic foundation of step-by-step growth and change in the long run. Incremental growth and transformation mainly happen when sustained by repetition, reinforcement, and coaching.

So What Do You Really Require?

Perhaps at this point you are beginning to see that ?What You Really Want? is an on-going, quantifiable progress in how your sales team develops overall results. And, if that is actually what you desire, the selection of sales training companies has become far easier!

Please make sure to decide on a company that has a good track record of delivering maintained great success and you?ll be making an intelligent decision.

If you are searching for an excellent sales training company in Chicago or a firm to take care of your sales assessments in Chicago then this sales training company should be your 1st call.

Start Fresh With Autocorrect On Your iPad or iPhone [iOS Tips]

Start Fresh With Autocorrect On Your iPad or iPhone [iOS Tips]Start Fresh With Autocorrect On Your iPad or iPhone [iOS Tips]

The reason the software keyboard works so well in iOS has a lot to do with Autocorrect and its pretty spot-on ability to figure out what the heck we?re typing. Most of the time, anyway, as various parody sites on the internet will attest to.

Autocorrect also learns the words you use more frequently, and adds them to a list in the background, letting you use oddly spelled terminology more easily. Sometimes, though, this functionality can backfire, as you end up adding words and phrases you really don?t want to have things autocorrect to.

Luckily, there?s an easy fix for this one.

Launch the Settings app on your iOS device with a tap. Then tap on General, then scroll to the bottom of the right hand column. Tap Reset and you?ll see a host of options to reset. You can Reset All Settings, Erase All Content and Settings (yikes), Reset Network settings, Home Screen Layout, and Location & Privacy settings.

The one we want is the Reset Keyboard Dictionary. Tap that and enter your iOS passcode if you have one set. If you don?t, why don?t you? You?ll still have another chance to Cancel at this point. If you?re ready, tap Reset, and all custom words you?ve typed on the keyboard will go away, and the keyboard dictionary will be reset to the factory defaults. Hooray!

Robert Pattinson: Sober, In Good Spirits at Western-Themed Bar

It looks like Robert Pattinson has Kristen Stewart beat in at least one regard: the actor most likely showered on Friday.

Amidst reports that Stewart is an unkempt mess, sources say that Pattinson actually made a public appearance over the weekend, stopping by The Deer Lodge in Ojai, California on Friday night with a few friends.

Smirk from Robert Pattinson

An employee of the cowboy-themed establishment confirms that he heard the same, telling Radar Online that he was not working that evening, but "several people" informed him "Pattinson was here enjoying the music" and seemed to be in "good spirits."

The bar is located about 90 minutes from the home Rob and Kristen shared in Los Angeles and would make sense as a locale for Rob to frequent at the moment, considering he's rumored to be residing in Reese Witherspoon's vacation home. It's situated in Ojai.

An unnamed patron also confirmed the handsome sighting, Tweeting afterward:

"Awesome night in Ojai. Got to hang with a rowdy bunch of Brits & one of them happened to be Edward... He wasn't moping and the girls were definitely just his friend... I stood next to them at the bar. He wasn't drunk. Just taking in the scene. Smoked next to him outside."

The countdown, meanwhile, is on for Pattinson first official public appearance: it will take place August 13 in NYC at the premiere of Cosmopolis.

Not So Creative Writing in Berlin: The yearnings were almost painful ...

The Mediterranean sea was actually rather greenish, not the azure blue I had always imagined. The sky, despite the mellow weather, was not as blue either. How was it possible that this almost falsified representation of home only triggered more homesickness? Diaspora and wanderlust. Heimweh and Fernweh. The yearnings were almost painful, and when they mingled, the prodigal daughter ended up in Barcelona. By the seashore of Barceloneta.

"The sky almost looks like it's veiled." I was talking to Cat, a girl from London. Almost random, but once you traveled alone for a while, even complete strangers looked like worth a conversation.

I ran into the sea with Cat and Roxy, only meant to paddle. I was actually in my knickers, not seeing myself ending up on the seashore when I headed out for a gaudi pilgrimage that morning. But the waves were giant, almost formidable. A huge wave came and I was already soaking wet.

Salt. Salt. I could taste the salt as I opened up my mouth attempting to speak, but only silenced by an unexpected choke of salty water. I did not know how much I missed the sea until I finally had the luxury to be on a proper seashore. I forgot the smell of mussels, the balmy wind, and the forcefulness of a wave. I forgot how it felt to be wet from top to toe, hair dripping, completely knocked down by waves with the futile attempt to hold on to my underwear. I forgot how I could be all screaming and laughing, holding hands to other girls to stabilize ourselves awaiting another wave.

The last real "seashore" I went to was the Rose Sea in wales, whose serenity had a certain beauty in itself, but the grayish color almost translated as insipid. It ?was a windy afternoon in June, which in northern UK equaled to never ending drizzles, scarfs and jacket. It was nothing like this, being able to sunbathe till seven o'clock at night, soaked and dried myself with the help of the gentle afternoon sun; it was nothing like just lying on the seashore, completely rid of all anxieties and existential crisis that plagued only too often. It was at least remarkable for someone whose anxieties even have anxieties.

I was on the flight back to Berlin, as the aircraft took off I looked down at the green green Mediterranean sea.

Its beauty was almost hurting. Like Heimweh. Like Fernweh.

Valve reportedly preparing secondgeneration Source Engine, kinda explains the Episode Three delay

ValveTime has dug through the Source Filmmaker code to reveal references to "Source 2," reportedly a next-generation revamp of Valve's famous game engine. Given that the three major consoles are all due a refresh, it's unsurprising to see preparations being made. That said, however, the second (and major) launch title for the original Source was Half Life 2, so we're gonna be getting a complaint letter ready if we don't get some more time with Gordon, Alyx and Dog in a beautifully rendered future dystopia.

new years ball drop

Returns on Stocks Going Forward: Will our Generation ever Retire ...

Bill Gross, the famous bond manager who founded PIMCO, has a new article out where he argues that we shouldn't expect much in the way of equity returns over the next few decades.

Although you might think that he would use this as a chance to plug bond investing, you'd be wrong: he doesn't think that bonds will fare much better, and we'll instead see central banks try to inflate their way out of the problem going forward.

This article really got me thinking about the broader implications of living in a world where the premium for investing in equities is very uncertain. We (people in our 20's-30's) won't have the pensions and stable, 30 year jobs that our "Greatest Generation" grandparents did, and it's far from certain that we'll have the explosive equity returns that our "Baby Boomer" parents did. In spite of this, however, I'm very optimistic about our generation's ability to find meaningful, substantive work even if it means less assurance of a conventional career path.

Going back to Gross's original article for a second, he starts off by arguing that it's going to be difficult to realize a 6.6% future equity return going forward because the historical situation that created those returns was particularly favorable to capital---and we can't expect that to continue going forward...

Yet the 6.6% real return belied a commonsensical flaw much like that of a chain letter or yes ? a Ponzi scheme. If wealth or real GDP was only being created at an annual rate of 3.5% over the same period of time, then somehow stockholders must be skimming 3% off the top each and every year. If an economy?s GDP could only provide 3.5% more goods and services per year, then how could one segment (stockholders) so consistently profit at the expense of the others (lenders, laborers and government)?

The legitimate question that market analysts, government forecasters and pension consultants should answer is how that 6.6% real return can possibly be duplicated in the future given today?s initial conditions which historically have never been more favorable for corporate profits. If labor and indeed government must demand some recompense for the four decade?s long downward tilting teeter-totter of wealth creation, and if GDP growth itself is slowing significantly due to deleveraging in a New Normal economy, then how can stocks appreciate at 6.6% real? They cannot, absent a productivity miracle that resembles Apple?s wizardry.

And he's not much more optimistic about bonds...

With long Treasuries currently yielding 2.55%, it is even more of a stretch to assume that long-term bonds ? and the bond market ? will replicate the performance of decades past...What you see is what you get more often than not in the bond market, so momentum-following investors are bound to be disappointed if they look to the bond market?s past 30-year history for future salvation, instead of mere survival at the current level of interest rates.

The main "out" that Gross sees is governments inflating the problem away, which of course has the potential to be very destructive:

The primary magic potion that policymakers have always applied in such a predicament is to inflate their way out of the corner. The easiest way to produce 7?8% yields for bonds over the next 30 years is to inflate them as quickly as possible to 7?8%! Woe to the holder of long-term bonds in the process! Similarly for stocks because they fare poorly as well in inflationary periods. Yet if profits can be reflated to 5?10% annual growth rates, if the U.S. economy can grow nominally at 6?7% as it did in the 70s and 80s, then America?s and indeed the global economy?s liabilities can be ?reflated? away.

Although there have been some good critiques of Gross's point on Seeking Alpha and from Jeremy Siegel, I think that it's still reasonable to assume that it will be much more difficult for individuals, families, pension managers, and governments to make long term investing plans when there are so many compelling reasons to think that the historical 6-7% equity premium won't persist going forward.

The ongoing financial crisis has already caused people to postpone retirement, or has perhaps put individuals in a position where retirement isn't even a possibility--I've seen this in my own family. Job growth is still anemic, and many underemployed recent grads may never be able to fully catch up. I don't think that the traditional model of working for a set number of years before retiring will be nearly as common in the future as employment lengths and salaries become more volatile.

But is this such a terrible thing? Perhaps not entirely. Anecdotally, I think that my generation (mid-20's) has less overall desire to follow the traditional path of climbing the corporate ladder and then retiring at a set time. I would bet that just as many people at top schools want to work at a startup as a large corporation. And the internet is making it much easier to work remotely on project work or other tasks. I think that going forward we'll see more flexible work arrangements and hours, though the price that we'll pay for that will be in the form of less security and more income volatility.

Monkeys, what do you think the "workplace" will look like 20-30 years from now? Do you think that you'll "retire" in the same way that the American "Greatest Generation" did? How do you think that investment fund managers will deal with this a world with more volatile asset returns?
