(AP) ? It was not the kind of advice women were used to hearing:

? Make a list of the men in your life and arrange them in categories: "The Eligibles," ''The Eligibles-But-Who-Needs-Them," ''The Don Juans," ''The Divorcing Man."

? "Marriage is insurance for the worst years of your life." Save the "best" for when you're single.

? "Travel on boats is strictly B.Y.O.M (Bring Your Own Man)."

? And forget about church. "Spiritual benefits," yes. Prospects for bed, unlikely.

The sexual revolution, Helen Gurley Brown declared 50 years ago, was no longer just for men.

Brown, the longtime editor of Cosmopolitan magazine and an author who encouraged women not to save it for the wedding night, died Monday at a hospital in New York after a brief hospitalization, Hearst CEO Frank A. Bennack Jr. said in a statement. She was 90.

"Sex and the Single Girl," her million-selling grab-bag book of advice, opinion and anecdote on why being single shouldn't mean being sexless, made a celebrity of the 40-year-old advertising copywriter in 1962 and made her a foil for feminists who believed that women's rights meant more than sleeping around.

Three years later, she was hired by Hearst Magazines to turn around the languishing Cosmopolitan, and it became her playtime pulpit for the next 32 years.

She said at the outset that her aim was to tell a reader "how to get everything out of life ? the money, recognition, success, men, prestige, authority, dignity ? whatever she is looking at through the glass her nose is pressed against."

"It was a terrific magazine," she said, looking back when she surrendered the editorship of the U.S. edition in 1997. "I would want my legacy to be, 'She created something that helped people.' My reader, I always felt, was someone who needed to come into her own."

Along the way, she added to the language such terms as "Cosmo girl" ? hip, sexy, vivacious and smart ? and "mouseburger," which she coined first in describing herself as a plain and ordinary woman who must work relentlessly to make herself desirable and successful.

Her motto: "Good girls go to heaven, bad girls go everywhere."

She put big-haired, deep-cleavaged beauties photographed by Francesco Scavullo on the magazine's cover, behind teaser titles like "Nothing Fails Like Sex-cess ? Facts About Our Real Lovemaking Needs."

Male centerfolds arrived during the 1970s ? actor Burt Reynolds' (modestly) nude pose in 1972 created a sensation ? but departed by the '90s.

Brown and Cosmo were anathema to some feminists, who staged a sit-in at her office. One of them, Kate Millet, said, "The magazine's reactionary politics were too much to take, especially the man-hunting part. The entire message seemed to be 'Seduce your boss, then marry him.'"

Another early critic was Betty Friedan, who dismissed the magazine as "immature teenage-level sexual fantasy" but later came around and said Brown, "in her editorship, has been a rather spirited and gutsy example in the revolution of women."

"Bad Girls Go Everywhere," the 2009 biography of Brown by Jennifer Scanlon, a women's studies professor, argued that her message of empowerment made Brown a feminist even if the movement didn't recognize her as such.

There was no disputing that Brown quickly turned a financial turkey into a songbird.

Within four issues, circulation, which had fallen below the 800,000 readers guaranteed to advertisers, was on the rise, even with the newsstand price increasing from 35 cents to 50 and then 60.

Sales grew every year until peaking at just over 3 million in 1983, then slowly leveled off to 2.5 million at $2.95 a copy, where it was when Brown left in 1997. (She stayed on as editor-in-chief of the magazine's foreign editions.)

She was still rail thin, 5 feet 4 and within a few pounds of 100 in either direction, as she had kept herself throughout her life with daily exercise and a careful diet.

"You can't be sexual at 60 if you're fat," she observed on her 60th birthday. She also championed cosmetic surgery, speaking easily of her own nose job, facelifts and silicone injections.

An ugly duckling by her own account, Helen Gurley was a child of the Ozarks, born Feb. 18, 1922, in Green Forest, Ark. Growing up during the Depression, she earned pocket money by giving other kids dance lessons.

Her father died when she was 10 and her mother, a teacher, moved the family to Los Angeles, where young Helen, acne-ridden and otherwise physically unendowed, graduated as valedictorian of John H. Francis Polytechnic High School in 1939.

All the immediate future held was secretarial work. With typing and shorthand learned at a business college, she went through 18 jobs in seven years at places like the William Morris Agency, the Daily News in Los Angeles, and, in 1948, the Foote, Cone & Belding advertising agency. There, when finally given a shot at writing ad copy, she began winning prizes and was hired away by Kenyon & Eckhardt, which made her the highest-paid advertising woman on the West Coast.

She also evidently was piling up the experience she put to use later as an author, editor and hostess of a TV chit-chat show.

"I've never worked anywhere without being sexually involved with somebody in the office," she told New York magazine in 1982. Asked whether that included the boss, she said, "Why discriminate against him?"

Marriage came when she was 37 to twice-divorced David Brown, a former Cosmopolitan managing editor-turned-movie producer, whose credits would include "The Sting" and "Jaws."

Her husband encouraged Brown to write a book, which she put together on weekends, and suggested the title "Sex and the Single Girl." A working title of "Sex for the Single Girl" had been rejected as a little too permissive, even for Gurley Brown.

They moved to New York after the book became one of the top sellers of 1962. Moviemakers bought it for a then-very-hefty $200,000, not for the nonexistent plot, but for its provocative title. Natalie Wood played a character named Helen Gurley Brown who had no resemblance to the original.

According to Hearst, "Sex and the Single Girl" has been translated into 16 languages and published in 28 countries. She followed up her success with a long-playing record album, "Lessons in Love," and another book, "Sex in the Office," in 1965.

That year she and her husband pitched a women's magazine idea at Hearst, which turned it down, but hired her to run Cosmopolitan instead.

In 1967 she hosted a TV talk show, "Outrageous Opinions," syndicated in 19 cities and featuring celebrity guests willing to be prodded about sex and other risque topics.

She also went on to write five more books, including "Having It All" in 1982 and in 1993, at age 71, "The Late Show," which was subtitled: "A Semiwild but Practical Survival Plan for Women Over 50."

"My own philosophy is if you're not having sex, you're finished. It separates the girls from the old people," she told an interviewer.

The Browns were childless by choice, she said.

Why The French Are Healthier Than The British

According to research, French are healthier than the Brits and surprisingly, people in France need not to starve themselves to death and spend countless hours in the gyms just to lose significant amount of weight. What are the underlying causes behind this phenomenon?

Living a French way of life is such an awesome experience. In France, you get to indulge your palate to a number of delectable cuisines such as wedges, filet mignon and crème brûlee, without worrying about your diet and weight.

Many Americans and Brits coming to France are surprised to notice a significant reduction in their weight despite the fact that they frequently indulge themselves to French diet. According to research, French are less likely to be diagnosed with heart diseases and other serious health conditions compared to Americans and Brits.

Risk for Heart Diseases

According to recent statistical data, British and French share the same risk level for heart diseases as French are now consuming as much as what the Brits consume. However, statistics show that incidence of heart diseases in France only accounts for a quarter of the incidence of cardiovascular diseases in the United Kingdom. How is this possible?

According to researchers, the fewer incidences of heart diseases among French today are greatly affected by their lifestyle in the past. Researchers claim that 20-30 years before, French people were taking less of animal fat.

Cardiovascular diseases usually take a period of time to develop. Since they observe a healthier lifestyle before compared today, then they are less likely to be diagnosed with heart diseases. Researchers predict that in 10-15 years time, deaths associated with heart diseases in France will be as high as those in the United Kingdom.

What Is It With The French Diet

France is a great place to live life-this is perhaps one of the most common reactions from tourists visiting France. Surprisingly, France is holding a record for a wide range of delicious, great tasting and nutritious foods. Compared to American and British diets, French diets are mostly composed of healthy and raw ingredients which are definitely good for the body.

Most French diets exclude large amount of meat and fish are only included three to four times a week. French diet usually contains creams and cheeses but people in France are less likely to gain weight. Also, French pastries contain less of sugar. Instead, pastries are mostly made with cream and real butter. While most British take a sandwich on their desk while working, French people prefer taking a full meal with a glass of wine.

Fast food Restaurants in France

Compared to the UK and US, there are less fast food restaurants in France. Eating in France is not done in a rushed manner. For French people, taking time in eating smaller courses along with a glass of wine is a good way to relax which is good for the body. They believe that it is beneficial for digestion.

High intake of red wine is thought to be the major factor behind the impressive health of French people. However, researchers find insufficient connection between the intake of red wine and good health of French. Instead, they suggest other factors such as the minimal intake of animal fat.

The Role of Red Wine in the Health of French People

While some researchers do not support the idea that intake of red wine plays a major role in the good health of French people, many scientific studies prove that intake of wine, especially red wine, is beneficial to the body.

Red wines, when taken in moderate amount, help in strengthening the heart. It helps in preventing the production of certain chemicals which can clog up arteries thereby resulting to heart attack later on.

Engaging in Physical Activities to Improve Health

Aside from the abundant availability of French restaurants offering mouth-watering delicacies, you might be surprised to know that there are fewer gyms in France. You are less likely to find gyms in France as French people tend to integrate exercise with their daily living.

Unlike the Brits, French are less likely to take a walk or jog over the weekends. But in spring, you can find thousands of French cyclists. From kids to adults, cycling is an excellent way to achieve good health. After cycling, you can find lots of them heading to village bistros, searching for a delicious red wine to drink.

Blood test could guide treatment for kidney cancer

ScienceDaily (Aug. 13, 2012) ? A common enzyme that is easily detected in blood may predict how well patients with advanced kidney cancer will respond to a specific treatment, according to doctors at Duke Cancer Institute.

The finding, published online Monday, Aug. 13, 2012, in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, could lead to the first blood test to determine the best treatment for late-stage kidney cancer.

"Being able to direct these patients to a treatment we know will help them would be a major advancement in their care," said Andrew Armstrong, M.D., ScM, associate professor of medicine and surgery at Duke and lead author of the study. "At the same time, patients who would not benefit from the treatment would be spared from undergoing a drug regimen with potential side effects that could diminish their quality of life."

If further studies verify the initial results, the finding could change how doctors treat patients for a disease that has been increasing in the United States. The National Cancer Institute estimates kidney cancer will strike 65,000 people in the U.S. this year, and almost 14,000 will die of the disease.

Armstrong and colleagues at Duke focused on an enzyme known as lactate dehydrogenase, or LDH, which is found in almost all body tissues and plays a role in converting food to energy. As cells die or are injured, they release LDH, so elevated levels of the enzyme have long been used in blood tests to identify cancer, tissue damage, and other disorders.

In kidney cancer, elevated LDH levels have been considered a risk factor for aggressive disease, signaling tumor progression. More recent studies have suggested that elevated LDH may also indicate the activation of key genetic alterations that lead to cancer proliferation.

One of these cancer gene pathways relies on a protein called mammalian target of rapamycin, or mTOR, and drugs called mTOR inhibitors work to shut down the process. An international Phase III trial testing an mTOR inhibitor known as temsirolimus found that the then-investigational drug extended the lives of patients with kidney cancer that had spread to other areas of the body, and it even helped the patients with high LDH levels who typically have a poor prognosis.

Intrigued by those results, the Duke researchers used data from the trial to determine whether a high LDH level was more than just a prognostic tool in advanced kidney cancer, and could perhaps also predict the effectiveness of an mTOR inhibitor. Armstrong and colleagues analyzed the outcomes of 404 of the study participants, approximately half of whom received a standard therapy, interferon-alpha, and half who received temsirolimus, which has since been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to treat kidney cancer.

LDH levels had been measured at the start of the study for all participants. In their analysis, the Duke team found that patients with high LDH levels at the start of the study survived significantly longer on the mTOR inhibitor drug than they did on interferon-alpha. Median survival for patients with high LDH levels was 6.9 months on temsirolimus compared to 4.2 months for the high LDH level patients on the standard drug. At six months, 53.7 percent of high LDH level patients taking temsirolimus were alive, compared to 39.5 percent taking interferon-alpha. Patient survival rates at 12 months were 34.3 percent for temsirolimus, vs. 12.7 percent for interferon-alpha.

Patients with low LDH at the start of the study showed little difference in survival based on the drug they received, with median survival of 11.7 months for the mTOR inhibitor patients compared to 10.4 months for those taking interferon-alpha.

"This is an exciting finding," Armstrong said. "In breast cancer, for example, we can test for HER-2 expression and offer effective treatments based on that. Having a similar biomarker for kidney cancer that could direct patients to the best therapies for their cancer would be a major step forward."

Armstrong said additional studies are needed to verify the finding, and to determine whether LDH might predict the success of additional drugs that target other cancers.

In addition to Armstrong, study authors were Daniel J. George, M.D., and Susan Halabi PhD. The study was funded by Pfizer, which markets temsirolimus. Armstrong and George receive speaking fees and research support from Pfizer and Novartis.

Will Romney embrace Ryan?s ideas for Social Security reform?

Paul Ryan (Shannon Stapleton/Reuters)DES MOINES, Iowa?Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan has argued for an overhaul of the federal Social Security program that would include private retirement accounts, but there is little indication that his running mate, Mitt Romney, will embrace Ryan's plan in full if elected in November.

As a House member during the George W. Bush administration, Ryan was one of the chief proponents of changing the federal pension program to allow workers to invest part of their income into private investment accounts, while retaining the safety net currently available to retirees. In 2004, Ryan sponsored a bill with New Hampshire Republican Sen. John Sununu that would give workers the option to invest part of their payroll taxes into private accounts. Bush embraced a watered-down version of the plan, but it ultimately failed in Congress.

But while Social Security has been one of Ryan's key issues for several years, Romney has not made transforming the program a central part of his campaign. The former Massachusetts governor has discussed changes to the system, including allowing investment in the market, but has not given the idea the full-throated endorsement of his new No. 2.

The official Romney campaign website lists two solutions that Romney intends to implement: raising the retirement age and means-testing the program, which would provide fewer benefits to wealthy retirees who don't need to rely on the funds. (Romney is always careful to point out that any changes to the system would not apply to current retirees.)

In his 2010 book, "No Apology," which is not so much a strict policy treatise as an outline of possible solutions, Romney discussed raising the retirement age and means-testing, but also mentioned allowing private accounts for younger workers.

"[O]ne or a combination of these last three options will put Social Security on track to sustainably meet its obligations to current and future retirees," Romney wrote.

When asked at a town-hall meeting in 2011 if he supports "privatization" of Social Security, Romney backed away from support, saying that he only mentioned it as an idea that others had floated. Instead, he proposed offering more opportunities for middle class families to invest in the market without paying taxes on interest, dividends and capital gains, but not within the confines Social Security

"Privatizing Social Security, that doesn't make sense," Romney said at the time. "There have been some people who have said, Let people save part of their money and invest it. The market goes up and down. I kind of like the system we have in that regard. It would be nice if people could take a portion of their income and save it tax free."

[Political junkie? Sign up for the Yahoo! News Daily Ticket newsletter today]

At a Republican presidential debate during Romney's first run for president in 2007, he discussed raising the retirement age and means-testing the program, and he also said that the Bush proposal to allow private accounts "works."

"The president said let's have private accounts and take that surplus money that's being gathered now in Social Security and put that into private accounts," he said. "That works."

A spokeswoman for Romney's campaign told Yahoo News that Romney has a "comprehensive plan" for Social Security, but did not respond when asked if private accounts would be included.

"The Social Security Trustees project that the program will continue to run deficits until 2033, at which point the program's funds will be completely exhausted," said Romney spokeswoman Amanda Henneberg. "Without a plan to protect Americans who rely on Social Security, seniors in 2033 will see their benefits cut 25 percent because of President Obama's inaction. We cannot allow this to happen.? Mitt Romney is committed to ensuring that Social Security is there for future generations and he has a comprehensive plan to save Social Security with commonsense reforms."

The daylight between the two men, it seems, is not so much in the policy but in their enthusiasm for it. It seems clear, given the way Romney has chosen to address Social Security, that Ryan's ambitious plan may have to spend more time on the shelf.

This article has been updated to include comment from the Romney campaign.

No Hard Drives Were Harmed in the Making of this Picture ? Ball in ...

Last week, one of my son?s friends lost a summer of work he?d done filming a documentary. ?It was a crucial college project for which he?d solicited and received considerable financial support via Kickstarter. ?He?d backed up months of footage garnered from extensive travel and interviews to an external hard drive. ?Secure that he had a backup, he deleted the source data to gain more room on his Mac. ?It wasn?t until the external hard drive failed that it dawned on him that a backup isn?t a backup if it?s your only copy.

My son?s friend was distraught and ready to run all manner of over-the-counter recovery programs in a desperate attempt to salvage his labors. ?That would have been about the worst possible thing to do since running these tools against a mechanically compromised or logically corrupted drive often extinguishes any hope of data recovery.

By virtue of the superior genetic material and parenting skills of his mother, my son Madison is a very bright young man and had the presence of mind to intercede and tell his buddy to stop, do nothing and bring the drive to my lab to see what could be done. ?My son also understood that data recovery is uncharacteristically economical when you know someone who will do it for free.

The failed drive was a 2.5? Seagate STBU1000100?enclosure housing a one terabyte?Samsung??drive. ?Though 1TB is the smallest storage unit I use, I?m still awed by these?pocket-sized?marvels: 50,000 time more capacious and 300 times cheaper than my first hard drive!

Unfortunately, the low cost of consumer hard drives isn?t just due to great strides in manufacturing and distribution efficiency; some of the economy stems from corner cutting.? One way manufacturers of?external hard disk drives (XHDDs) cut corners is?by eliminating the conventional SATA interface on the drive and hard wiring to a USB interface. ?The failed drive employed a removable USB 3.0 SuperSpeed interface. ?When I popped it off, I was pleased to see SATA connectors beneath. ?My job just got a lot easier. ?My next objective was to get the drive out of the enclosure and inspect it. ?Plus, I wanted to smell the drive.

No, I am not a technology fetishist (okay, maybe a little). ?Smelling the drive is one of the best ways to assess whether it has suffered an electrical malfunction causing?over-current?damage to components on the logic board. ?If the drive smelled burned, then I?d need to attempt a physical fix before applying power.

Another way XHDD manufacturers save money is through the use of snap-together plastic enclosures. ?These are tricky to open without tearing up?the housing or snapping off closure tabs. ?As protecting the appearance of the drive wasn?t a concern here, I began prying up the seams in the customary way and managed to extract the drive with the enclosure?little worse for wear.

The drive smelled fine (with low notes of cinnamon and black cherry) and the motor spun up without any of the sounds of a hard drive in its digital death throes.

My next objective was to acquire a data dump of the drive before undertaking repair. ?I sought a?bitstream of the physical contents of the medium to have a ?path back? in the event that mechanical failure was imminent or repair efforts might adversely impact the contents. ? if all else failed, I could either land the bitsream on a new drive or carve the contents using binary signatures to recover whatever i could.

I connected the drive to a SATA write blocker and used X-Ways Forensics to acquire the physical bitstream. ?I was using a Windows workstation, so the write blocker insured that Windows couldn?t alter the contents of the drive as WinOSes like to do when they sees a new drive on the bus.

I was relieved to see that X-Ways Forensics identified and correctly interpreted the partitioning scheme on the drive. ?That?augured?well for recovery. ?However, bad sectors were detected, making it all-the-more crucial to secure a bitstream ASAP.

It took 7.5 hours to acquire the?1,000,204,886,016 bytes on the medium and thankfully just seven sectors?proved bad. ?Based on their locations, these sectors weren?t likely to be the sole culprits for why the drive couldn?t be seen by a Mac, but having successfully recovered over a trillion bytes freed me to undertake repair without risking catastrophic,?irreversible?data loss.

To make a long story short, it took me just minutes to resolve the corruption once I?d acquired the data. ?My son?s relieved friend has all his data back, and his Kickstarter investors needn?t hear that their investment died with the drive. ?Further, his nail biting brush with digital oblivion helped my son?s filmmaker friend appreciate that important data must be replicated, not merely moved around, and that a copy needs to be protected from the risks to the source to avoid losing both.

As students (and teachers like me) head back to school, it?s worth remembering that having your laptop and your backup drive in the same backpack is no protection against loss or theft and inadequate protection against damage. ?If someone with sticky fingers gets into your dorm room and sees both a nice laptop and a nice external drive, do you think they won?t steal them both (along with your iPhone, iPad and iPod, too)? ?Drive failure or disappearance isn?t something that only happens to other people. ?ALL hard drives fail, and reportedly about half of all laptops get stolen.

Losing all the data on your computer isn?t the end of the world?but it may feel like it for quite a while. ?So follow these simple rules without fail:

Gold for Mexico

Mexico seizes the momentum in the first minute of the game and never looks back as it beats Brazil 2-1 in the gold medal match. Oribe Peralta scores both goals, leading Mexico to its first soccer gold medal.

Brazil vs Mexico, Men's Gold Medal Match

WEMBLEY, England (AP) ? With a goal in 29 seconds, Mexico extended Brazil's wait for a first Olympic football gold for at least another four years.

Oribe Peralta stunned the Brazilians by scoring as some fans were still making it to their seats for the final at Wembley Stadium on Saturday. The heavily favored South Americans never recovered, losing 2-1 after a late comeback attempt came up just short.

"I don't know if this was the best match of my career, but what I do know is that this is the most important, because I am here today with a gold medal," Peralta said. "I dreamed about this moment. It is one of those things you don't get to live every day."

The surprising result left Mexico celebrating its first Olympic gold in men's football ? and Brazil wondering if it will ever add the elusive title to its long list of triumphs in football.

"Yet again we came close, but didn't quite get it," Brazil coach Mano Menezes said.

Peralta took advantage of a mistake by the Brazilian defense in the opening minute and slotted a low right-foot shot just inside the near post. It was the fastest Olympic goal since FIFA began keeping record of the competition in 1976.

The striker added the second with a firm header from a free kick in the 75th.

Hulk scored for Brazil in injury time, but Oscar missed a header in the final seconds to waste the last chance for a comeback.

"This is a great emotion for all our country, Mexico will be celebrating on the streets," coach Luis Fernando Tena said. "It is a great honor for a coach to see his players singing the national anthem with gold medals around their necks. It's a very important moment for Mexican football. It's a great moment for us."

The Olympic gold is the only significant trophy that Brazil, five-time world champions, hasn't won in football. The Brazilians established the London Games as the team's priority this year and arrived as the heavy favorite after bringing most of its top players for the competition. Many will also be in the team for the next World Cup, which will be played in Brazil.

"We're very sorry yet again not to get gold," Menezes said. "Defeat is part of the maturing process. This group will continue on this path and get ready for 2014."

Fans threw straw sombreros in the air and waved Mexican flags at the final whistle. Peralta got hold of one of the wide-brim hats and passed it around among his teammates.

As Mexican players jumped up and down at midfield in celebration, the Brazilians dropped to the ground in despair. Neymar-->, touted as the future of Brazilian football, was one of them, sitting stoned-faced. Real Madrid left back Marcelo dropped his head and cried as his teammates came to try to console him.

"We are all sad, we know it was probably our only chance to win a gold medal," Neymar said. "Four years from now most of us likely won't be here again so this was our last Olympics. It was our last chance to win the gold."

The Mexicans started celebrating early in front of a crowd of more than 86,000.

Peralta's goal came after Manchester United right back Rafael tried to make a pass backward. Mexican midfielder Javier Aquino intercepted the ball, sending it forward to Peralta just outside the area. With no defenders near him, he calmly fired his shot just inside the near post.

Peralta's second goal came from a free kick taken by Marco Fabian. Peralta broke away from Hulk and ran unmarked in a semicircle behind other Brazilian defenders to power in a header from near the penalty spot. Menezes complained about the foul call that led up to the second goal by the Mexicans.

Mexico could have scored after another mistake by the Brazilian defenders in the 64th. Captain Thiago Silva lost the ball in front of the goal and Marco Fabian sent an overhead kick onto the crossbar with the goalkeeper beaten.

The Mexicans also had a goal by Peralta disallowed for offside in the 69th, and Fabian missed the open net with his header from a corner in the 72nd.

Mexico's previous best Olympic showing was at the 1968 Mexico City Games, when it lost to Bulgaria in the semifinals and then fell to Japan in the bronze match.

Brazil appeared shaken by the early goal and struggled to create scoring opportunities to equalize. Neymar started playing better in the second half and helped Brazil push forward, but struggled to get his efforts on target.

Hulk scored the team's only goal with a low shot from inside the area in the first minute of injury time. Oscar, who just joined Chelsea, had the chance to equalize in the final moments, but his header from inside the six-yard box sailed just over the crossbar.

FIFA said Peralta's goal was the fastest at least since the 1976 Olympics, when football's governing body began keeping record of the competition. The fastest goal in a senior competition was scored by Turkey's Hakan Sukur 11 seconds into a match in the 2002 World Cup in South Korea and Japan.

FIFA said the fastest goal in all competitions was scored by Brazil's Fabinho after nine seconds in the 2007 Under-17 World Cup in South Korea.

Mexico won despite playing without Giovani dos Santos-->, one of the team's biggest stars. He was ruled out of the final because of a right hamstring injury.

It was Brazil's first Olympic final in men's football since the 1988 Seoul Games, when youngsters Romario and Bebeto ended with the silver. Brazil also lost the final four years earlier at the Los Angeles Games.

Brazil had to settle for the bronze in Beijing, when a team led by Ronaldinho lost to Lionel Messi and Argentina in the semifinals. The Brazilians also left with the bronze in 1996 in Atlanta with a team that included Ronaldo, Rivaldo, Roberto Carlos and Bebeto.

Powder Puff Cancer Risks | dailyRx

Using talc or other forms of powder to freshen up 'down there' is something women have done for years. This practice has been linked to an increased risk of ovarian cancer in several studies. What about powder and uterine cancer risks?

Using powder around the pubic area (perineum) is not associated with an increased risk of uterine cancer.

There may be some risk, however, in using powder on a diaphragm (birth control device that covers the cervix).

It's best not to use powder near your genitals.

Scientists led by biostatistics researcher, Sybil L. Crawford, PhD, examined the association between perineal powder use and the risk of endometrial cancer, which is diagnosed in about 59,000 American women each year.?

Researchers looked at information relating to some 48,500 women gathered from the Women's Health Initiative Observational Study Research Materials.

Of the women in the study, more than half (52 percent) reported ever having used powder in the pubic region.

During follow-up, which amounted to 364,134 person-years, 447 of the women were diagnosed with uterine cancer. For this group, that means 0.009 (447/48,500) women were diagnosed with the disease.

After analyzing the numbers, researchers concluded that using powder around the genitals was not related to an increased risk of uterine cancer, nor was the use of powder on sanitary napkins.

However, researchers did find a three-fold increased risk of uterine cancer among women who had used powder on a diaphragm for 20 or more years compared with women who had never used perineal powder.

The authors wrote, "Any duration of external use of perineal powder was not associated with increased risk of endometrial cancer; however, long-term use of powder on a diaphragm may increase the risk of endometrial cancer."

This research was published August 9 in the journal Cancer Causes & Control.
