Only Children More Likely to Be Overweight

Kids with no siblings may be at increased risk for childhood obesity, a new study from Europe suggests.

In the study, children between ages 2 to 9 with no siblings were about 50 percent more likely to be overweight than children who had siblings.

The results held even after the researchers took into account factors that could influence the children's weight, including gender, birth weight, parental weights, and the amounts of time the kids spent playing and watching TV.

"Being an only child appears to be a risk factor in and of itself,? for being overweight, said study researcher Monica Hunsberger, of University of Gothenburg in Sweden.

The reason for link may be differences between households with one child, and households with several children that were not measurable in the study, Hunsberger said. The researchers plan to conduct future studies to understand the cause behind the link, Hunsberger said.

The study involved12,700 children from eight European countries, including Sweden, Italy, Germany and Spain.

The children's body mass indexes (BMI) were measured, and parents were asked questions about the children?s eating habits, television viewing habits and amount of outdoor play time.

The study was published online July 2 in the journal Nutrition and Diabetes.

'Shameful': Sandusky victim sues Penn State

    Craig Houtz / Reuters

Second Mile founder and assistant Penn State football coach Jerry Sandusky attends a Second Mile Easter egg hunt in State College, Pennsylvania, in this April 8, 1990 file photo.

    By The Associated Press

HARRISBURG, Pa. -- A young man who testified against Jerry Sandusky sued Penn State on Friday for its "deliberate and shameful" handling of complaints that the former assistant football coach behaved inappropriately and sexually toward boys.

The suit filed by the person known as Victim 1 at Sandusky's trial said university officials made deliberate decisions not to report Sandusky to authorities.

It described their actions as "a function of (Penn State's) purposeful, deliberate and shameful subordination of the safety of children to its economic self-interests, and to its interest in maintaining and perpetuating its reputation."

The complaint was filed electronically in Philadelphia state court Friday night, Slade McLaughlin, a lawyer for Victim 1, told The Associated Press. The young man's initial accusations sparked the investigation that led to criminal charges against Sandusky and two university officials.

Sandusky, 68, was convicted in June of 45 criminal counts for sexual abuse of boys, both on and off campus. He awaits sentencing that will likely send him to prison for the rest of his life.

Penn State ex-president Graham Spanier: Freeh report on sex scandal is wrong

Victim 1 and his mother reported Sandusky to the boy's high school and the Clinton County child protective agency in November 2009. Their complaint triggered the state investigation that last year resulted in the criminal charges.

Former Penn State administrator Gary Schultz and athletic director Tim Curley, who is on leave, were charged with perjury and failure to report suspected child abuse. Both deny the allegations and are expected to go on trial in January.

Famed football coach Joe Paterno was fired. He died last January.

The suit draws heavily from court testimony, grand jury investigations and Penn State's own investigative report, conducted by former FBI director Louis Freeh. The report details how university officials handled the claims against Sandusky and Sandusky's behavior. Victim 1 is known as "John Doe C" in the complaint. The suit names no other defendants than the State College university.

    Related content:

University spokesman Dave La Torre said the school has no comment on the pending litigation.

"The university takes these cases very seriously," La Torre said, adding that the current president and board "have publicly emphasized that their goal is to find solutions that rest on the principle of justice for the victims."

The suit claimed that a "special relationship" between Penn State and The Second Mile, a Sandusky-founded charity for youth, gave Sandusky a respectable public image and connections that enabled him to perform criminal acts.

The young man known as "Victim 2" in the Jerry Sandusky sex abuse case spoke out for the first time through his attorneys about how the former Penn State coach abused him and stalked him with phone messages. NBC's Ron Allen reports.

It alleged "(Penn State) believed its reputation and economic interests would be adversely impacted if the public learned that a man closely associated with the school's football program was, in fact, a pedophile."

The Second Mile's future remains uncertain, subject to a legal dispute.

    'Numerous victims'
According to the lawsuit, Victim 1 met Sandusky about eight years ago, when the boy was 11 and a first-year participant in a camp sponsored by The Second Mile. In his second year, the boy drew Sandusky's attention and accepted invitations to spend nights at the coach's State College home and to attend professional sports events, the suit said.

Over a three-year period ending in 2008, the suit said, Sandusky assaulted the boy more than 100 times, including fondling and oral sex. The lawsuit claims Sandusky attacked "numerous victims over a span of 30 years," but noted that his criminal trial was limited to a 15-year period and 10 victims.

Following Victim 1's testimony, Sandusky was convicted of all six counts that related to him, including involuntary deviate sexual intercourse for instances of oral sex.

The suit alleged negligence, fraudulent concealment, intentional infliction of emotional distress and civil conspiracy. It said Victim 1 has suffered physical and emotional injuries and will likely need medical and psychological help well into his future. The suit seeks compensatory and punitive damages.

Another Sandusky accuser has filed a federal lawsuit related to the scandal and a second victim has filed a court notice that he will file complaint. Lawyers have suggested others may take legal action.

Novel technique to synthesize nanocrystals that harvest solar energy

ScienceDaily (Aug. 23, 2012) ? One reason that solar energy has not been widely adopted is because light absorbing materials are not durable. Materials that harvest solar radiation for energy often overheat or degrade over time; this reduces their viability to compete with other renewable energy sources like wind or hydroelectric generators. A new video protocol addresses these issues by presenting a synthesis of two inorganic nanocrystals, each of which is more durable than their organic counterparts.

The article, published in Journal of Visualized Experiments (JoVE), focuses on the liquid phase synthesis of two nanocrystals that produce hydrogen gas or an electric charge when exposed to light. "The main advantage of this technique is that it allows for direct, all inorganic coupling of the light absorber and the catalyst," says the leading author Dr. Mikhail Zamkov of Bowling Green State University.

Zamkov's nanocrystals are unique for two reasons: they separate charge in different ways due to their architectures, and they are inorganic and durable. The first nanocrystal is rod-shaped, which allows the charge separation needed to produce hydrogen gas, a reaction known as photocatalysis. The second nanocrystal is composed of stacked layers and generates electricity, thus being photovoltaic. Because the nanocrystals are inorganic, they are easier to recharge and less sensitive to heat than their organic counterparts. Zamkov's inorganic photocatalytic material allows a rechargeable reaction when exposed to cheap organic solvents, whereas in traditional photocatalytic reactions the catalyst is often irreversibly degraded. The photovoltaic nanocrystals can also withstand higher heat than the traditional photovoltaic cells that do not dissipate heat well.

"We have established a new method for making photocatalytic and photovoltaic materials. This is important primarily as a new strategy for making photovoltaic films that are 100% inorganic, thus producing a more stable solar panel. It is a design that you could reach marketability," Dr. Zamkov says. "It is important to have these steps documented in a video format, as the synthesis of the photocatalytic nanocrystals and the photovoltaic cells are long procedures with detailed steps. It makes our technique more visible and accessible."

The Significance Of The Lotus Flower In Thailand And Asia

Thailand is dominated by Buddhism. In fact, 95% of Thais belong to the Theravada Buddhism. The remaining 5% are scattered for other Buddhist sects and other religious denominations like Protestant and Catholics. Religion is the reason why lotus is a significant flower in Thailand.

According to historical accounts of Gautama Buddha, he used to compare the human heart with a lotus flower. According to his predicament, a lotus bud resembles a heart that is not yet enlightened. On the other hand, a lotus flower in full blossom is like an enlightened heart.

There are also legends that depict Buddha as being able to create lotus blooms everywhere he steps. This ancient religious belief or folklore to some can also be pointed out as to why lotus is such a significant flower in Thailand. Roam around the country and you will always see Buddha statues and images seated with a lotus flower. In general, the lotus flower symbolizes purity of the body, heart and mind.

The lotus flower is also a significant part of the Hindu culture and religion. In India, the lotus flower is heavily associated with Hindu divinities like Vishnu, Lakshmi, and Sarasvati. Of these three divinities, Vishnu is the most prominent to be associated with the lotus flower. She is often referred to as the Lotus One Eyed. Her statues and images are always depicted holding a lotus - much like how Buddha is depicted. For this reason, Vishnu is often regarded as a counterpart of Buddha. Other lesser Hindu divinities associated with lotus flower include Ganga and Ganesha. The extensive linkage of lotus to Hindu religion is greatly supported by similarly extensive citation of lotus in Puranic and Vedic literatures.

Countries that also exercise Buddhism and Hinduism have also their own shares of reverence to the lotus flower.

Lotus flower is known by many names such as Indian Lotus, Bean Of India, or Sacred Lotus. All of these alternative names have association with religion or with the place it is highly revered. By scientific classification, lotus flower is known as Nelumbo nucifera.

Aside from cultural and religious significance, the lotus flower is also significant it her Asian countries because of its wide uses. The seed heads of lotus flower is widely sold and utilized for decorations. All of its parts are edible - one main reason why it has its place in Chinese cuisines. The Chinese and Vietnamese use its dried stamens to add scent to tea leaves. The seeds can either be dried or eaten like popcorn. Its seeds can be turned into paste and be used as a main ingredient of moon cakes.

Lotus flower has also a significant role in the production of the lotus robe. In the Inle Lake of Myanmar (Burma), townspeople utilize the fibers of lotus flower to make a special fabric to create kya thingahn or garment that clothes Buddha images.

With all of the aforementioned linkages of the lotus flower in religion, culture, crafts, and cuisine - it is truly a flower that can be regarded as both sacred and significant.

Next, find out more about the significance of the lotus flower in Thailand and Asia!

Who is to blame for UFC 151 cancellation?

Plenty of anger bubbled up after UFC 151 was canceled. From UFC president Dana White to fans who posted on Cagewriter's Facebook page, people are angry there won't be fights in Las Vegas next weekend. Anger quickly turns into a search for blame. Who do you blame for UFC 151's demise?

Jon Jones: When an injury happens, fighters often have to make sacrifices to still be able to fight. Ask Rich Franklin about the many times he has stepped up when the UFC needed him to, and how he's been rewarded. Jones didn't do that, and missed out on an opportunity to win a ton of fans. He made a business decision, but now will have to face the business consequences for how fans react when fights at UFC 152.

The UFC: In planning a top-heavy card with UFC 151, they were playing with fire. Main event fighters are injured all the time. Even Jones has had to postpone fights for an injury. Putting a holiday weekend pay-per-view on the backs of two fighters was begging for a problem, as was hoping for a late replacement after a very busy summer of MMA.

Greg Jackson: UFC president Dana White threw some blame towards Jackson, Jones' coach.

"Jones's trainer, Greg Jackson, told Jon that taking the fight with Chael would be the biggest mistake of his life. That's what he told Jon Jones. Let me tell you, this guy (Greg Jackson) is a sport killer," White said on a media conference call.

"When you are a champion, much less one of the guys who is supposed to be one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world, you are supposed to step up. Jon Jones is a guy a lot of fans don't like, and I don't think this is going to make him any more popular. Lorenzo Fertitta (UFC chairman and CEO) and I are disgusted with Jon Jones and Greg Jackson."

Dan Henderson's knee: And here we come to the real culprit behind the cancellation of UFC 151. How dare you become injured when training in a brutal, dangerous sport, knee?

    Canada: Always blame Canada.

Does any one person or group deserve the blame for UFC 151 being canceled? Tell us in the comments, on Facebook or on Twitter.

Robin Williams Lists Napa Valley Vineyard and Estate for $35M ...

--> Wednesday, August 22, 2012, by Rob Bear

A Bay Area lawyer wrote in yesterday to pass on the news that funnyman Robin Williams was selling his long-time home and vineyard in Napa Valley for a stomach-churning $35M. The Real Estalker has confirmed that Williams is the owner, citing another source, and claims that the actor has owned at least part of the property since 1994. Today, the 653-acre estate?which was a House of the Day back in June and first covered by Curbed SF last year?includes a 20,000-square-foot main house, award-winning vines, a Slim Aarons-worthy infinity swimming pool, a solar farm, and a three-bedroom home for the property manager. We should have known it was celebrity owned when the listing included "safe rooms" and "climate-controlled cellars for art."

Students get 'fix' at Buzzcotti | ESU Bulletin

Caffeine-starved Emporia State students have a new place to get their fix. Buzzcotti, a coffee shop located in the main street area of the Memorial Union is officially open.

Ashley Johnson, freshman music education major, said she enjoys having the shop in the union because ?it?s right here by where you can study, so it?s kind of convenient.?

Johnson used her hornet card to purchase a frappucino at the discounted price of $1.35. Without the discount, the drink would have been around $4.

While the shop may have only opened recently, the idea behind Buzzcotti has been in the works for years, said Dave Hendricks, director of the Memorial Union.

Originally, the plan was for a ?grab and go? style store, which would have specialized in pre-packaged foods and bottled drinks in order to alleviate congestion at the Hornet Express.

However, after the opening of the Hornet Express, union workers researched food and drink sales and it was decided to change the concept to a coffee shop using the Starbucks coffee equipment that had previously been in the library.

?Throughout all of the planning (and) before we actually started construction, there were a lot of comments about coffee shops and that kind of atmosphere,? Hendricks said.

Hendricks said he had heard students talking about wanting a Starbucks or a coffee shop of some kind. He also said that having a shop like Buzzcotti helps to offset student costs in order to save money for students.

Jeff Cramer, senior secondary education major, said he finds Buzzcotti to be helpful to him for his unique lifestyle as a commuter. Cramer commutes to ESU from Lawrence.

?I?m drinking coffee the whole day to get ready for my hour drive, so for me especially it helped out,? Cramer said.

When asked about the quality and the prices at Buzzcotti, Cramer said that he felt they were ?normal? although he said that the selection wasn?t as great as it might be at other similar shops.

Buzzcotti is open from 6:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on weekdays and offers many kinds of Starbucks brand coffee, although, according to Hendricks, they cannot sell Starbucks? seasonal beverages.
