Hispanic Heritage: Top Latino Contributions To American History (PHOTOS)

The United States is a melting pot -- a stew concocted from different flavors found around the world; a dish made to be savored. And Hispanic Heritage Month is a time when the country celebrates one of those ingredients: Latin flavor. So what's there to celebrate?

How about the answer to a prehistoric mystery, an 'America's pastime' legend, or simply the tortillas or arroz y habichuelas that await you back home?

Latinos have done many things throughout American history and this is the time to celebrate them en grande! The slideshow below is but a place to start, a short list of some of the top Hispanic contributions. Think we missed one that you're particularly proud of? Let us know in the comments!

  • 18 Geniuses

The MacArthur Fellows Program, nicknamed the "Genius Grant," is given to U.S. citizens and residents that "show exceptional merit and promise of continued creative work." In other words, these individuals are awarded funds not based on their past merits but because they are likely to contribute to the world in a positive way in the future. Currently, 18 Hispanics have received the coveted grant including writer Sandra Cisneros (pictured), cuban-born anthropologist Ruth Behar, and playwright Luis Alfaro. Check out the full list of these 'MacArturos' and their impressive resumes.

  • Salsa Music

Of course Salsa originates from Cuban rhythms like son and rumba (among others) fused with Puerto Rican, Colombian beats. But the truth is that the term "salsa" was born in New York during the 1970's, where Latin American immigrants and musicians came together and brewed this new collective sound that has evolved through the decades. From "nuyorican" Willie Colon to cuban legend Celia Cruz up to present day salsa stars like Marc Anthony -- the genre continues to play an important role in the American music industry. Pun intended. Photo shows: Some of the greatest salsa musicians ever, members of the Fania All-Stars, including Yomo Toro, Roberto Roena, Papo Lucca, Adalberto Santiago, Johnny Pacheco, Reynaldo Jorge, Ismael Miranda, Puchi Boulong, Luigi Texidor, Leopoldo Pineda, Hector Lavoe, Ruben Blades, Celia Cruz, Cheo Feliciano and Pete 'El Conde' Rodriguez.

  • Helped Prevent World War III

The tension of the Cold War came to a climax during the October 1962 "Cuban Missile Crisis" -- an event that could have very well led to nuclear war. That's when Puerto Rico-born Vice Admiral Horacio Rivero came (or navigated) into the scene. On October 15, Rivero was given command of the U.S. Atlantic Fleet's amphibious force, which helped set up the naval blockade in the Caribbean. Rivero's long career with the U.S. Navy included rising to be the first-Hispanic four-Star Admiral, and serving as the NATO Commander In Chief of Southern Europe and as U.S. Ambassador to Spain during the Nixon administration.

  • What happened to the Dinosaurs?

That's right, Hispanics are behind the extinction of dinosaurs -- well, the theory actually. The Alvarez Hypothesis In 1980, physicist Luis Alvarez and his son, geologist Walter Alvarez, (both of Spanish descent) teamed up on an expedition to Italy, where they found a layers of sedimentary rock with high levels of iridium. Long story short, the father-son duo came up with the theory that 65 million years ago an asteroid hit earth and brought about the end of the "terrible lizards! Now just think how different your sixth-grade science class would have been if the Alvarez family hadn't answered the giant question on everyone's mind: What happened to the Dinosaurs? CORRECTION: A previous version of this slide referred to Dinosaurs as "giant lizards" when in fact the term's etymology depicts them as "terrible lizards."

  • Greatest Hitter Of All Time

Yes, Ted Williams was Hispanic. Williams' mother was Mexican, but truth be told he wasn't very vocal about his heritage. As the Baseball Hall Of Fame best put it: "[Williams'] 521 Home Runs place him 4th on the all time list. There are many who insist that Ted Williams ranks with Babe Ruth and Ty Cobb as the greatest hitters who ever lived. While Ted's life-time figures are taught by only a few, there is no telling to what heights those figures would have reached had he not given nearly 5 full years of his baseball career to the US Marines." A legendary baseball player and a U.S. Marine... need we say more?

  • Latin American Cuisine

The brand that brings you all your Latin American guilty pleasures--otherwise nearly impossible to find in the United States--Goya Foods is the largest hispanic owned food company in the United States. What started as a small Lower Manhattan business set up by Spanish-Puerto Rican Immigrant Prudencio Unanue Ortiz now distributes over 1,500 products originating from every corner of Latin American. If you grew up watching Spanish-language TV, you never forgot their slogan, 'Si es Goya, tiene que ser bueno.' In 2012, Goya Food partnered with the United States Department of Agriculture and First Lady Michelle Obama in promoting healthy eating and wellness with the "My Plate" or "Mi Plato" program.

  • Coolest Iconic Christmas Song

Feliz Navidad, Feliz Navidad, Feliz Navidad, Prospero A?o Y Felicidad These are iconic lyrics to Puerto Rican singer Jos? Feliciano's Christmas songs, a tune that has warmed the hearts of U.S. Hispanics and non-Hispanics alike during the season of giving season. But perhaps these first verses sound a little mumbled when sung by non-Spanish speakers, who clearly and loudly belt out the song's second part in English. I wanna wish you a Merry Christmas I wanna wish you a Merry Christmas I wanna wish you a Merry Christmas From the bottom of my heart.

Travel and Leisure: 5 Great Summer Activities in Val d'Isere

When you travel by shuttle from Geneva to Val d'Isere in the summer, you will probably be keen to take part in many of the fun activities available at the resort. Although it is known mainly for being a ski resort, summer is still a great time to visit as there are numerous activities to enjoy. Here is a selection of five of the best.

1. Rock Climbing
Rock climbing is one of the most popular activities in the summer months after your transfer from Geneva to Val d'Isere. There are many places to enjoy a spot of rock climbing in the mountains around the resort, and no matter what level you are, you can enjoy some climbing here. One of the best places to check out is Roc de Tovi?re which is especially suitable for beginners.

2. Paragliding
Even if you have never tried paragliding before you can still have a go after you arrive in the resort on your transfer from Geneva to Val d'Isere. This activity is undertaken along with an instructor, so you can enjoy the thrill of paragliding without having to worry about any of the technical details. Whereas in winter you will need to have basic skiing skills for the take-off, in the summer you can simply run down the slope.

3. Mountain Biking
Skiing is not the only way to race down the slopes in the resort: mountain biking is another excellent way to do just that, with the added benefit that it is available in the summer! There are many areas in the region where you can enjoy navigating some steep and thrilling slopes, but be careful where you go because some areas are only suitable for experienced riders.

4. Helicopter Tours
If you want to enjoy a thrilling activity that does not involve any effort on your part, helicopter tours could be ideal. This is the ultimate way to see the spectacular scenery surrounding the resort from the air, and you can simply relax and enjoy the views below of forests, mountains and glaciers.

5. Canyoning
This activity is exhausting but a whole lot of fun. It involves abseiling, jumping into streams, climbing around rocks, crossing rapids and getting very wet! It would be too cold to do this in the winter so the summer is the perfect time to have a go, and it is also suitable for complete beginners - although not advised for young children.
When you take a convenient transfer from Geneva to Val d'Isere in the summer months for a short break, you should definitely try out a few of the activities above. All of these are available during the summer, and there are many others to try out as well.

Lukas Johannes is a driver for Shuttle Direct. If you're looking for Geneva to Val d'Isere transfers, Shuttle Direct provide pre-booked shuttles to major destinations all over Europe. Wherever you travel, Shuttle Direct can make sure that you don't miss your car on your holiday abroad.

Steve Ballmer Suggests That Surface Isn't Going to Try to Beat Anyone on Price [Surface]

We're well into tablet season with the release of the new Kindles and the almost certain release of the iPad Mini next month, but Microsoft's Surface is in the game too, though we know quite little about it. In an interview with the Seattle Times, CEO Steve Ballmer was kind enough to mention the "sweet spot" for Surface pricing. Unfortunately it's $500-wide. More »

hat Topics Should Your Article Writing Campaign Cover?
Word Count:
356

Summary:
There are some easy ways to help you choose a direction and topic for your articles.

Keywords:
write, writing , create , author , writer , creative , web , promote , article , free , profit

Article Body:
You are convinced that article marketing will work wonders for your internet business, but are not sure what topics you should write about in those articles. What should be your focus?

There are some easy ways to help you choose a direction and topic for your articles. These include:
??What do your customers need to know: Think about some common questions that your customers or potential customers ask or what aspects of your particular business confuse the newcomers. For example, perhaps you have an online pet store. You might write articles addressing such topics as how to prepare your home for a new puppy (cat, bird, fish, etc.), what supplies you need to welcome home a new cat, how to choose a vet or even how to know when you need a vet. Don't try to sell here. Just provide important and useful information and you will gain interest and respect which will in turn result in far more customers than a direct sales approach.
??Check out some forums where people interested in your topic visit and post questions: What are some common questions and topics that are addressed. Look at novice users and expert users alike. Write different articles to address each audience.
??What do you wish you knew when you started out: Write a series of articles addressing topics that you now understand but wish you did in the beginning.
??Do a keyword search: Use a keyword research tool and search for keywords related to your topic. Use these keywords or searches as the springboard for articles in your niche.
You really can write articles about anything that interests you or strikes your fancy, but the most effective article marketing campaign for your business will be built around content-rich, keyword-targeted articles of interest to your core audience of potential customers.
Remember, you are not only working to obtain links but also to set yourself up as an expert in this field and to build a long-term relationship with customers so not only will you make a sale today, but tomorrow and next week and next year. That is how you build an internet business.

Improving Your Home? A Few Steps To Success! | My Blog

Posted by parkee92 on Sep 16, 2012 in FOOD JOKES | Comments Off

If the cabinets in your kitchen are out of date or in bad shape, consider replacing them or resurfacing them before you attempt to sell your home. Kitchen remodels, such as replacing cabinets, normally offer a 100 percent return on what you spend. Kitchens are a big selling point when someone is looking to purchase a home.

When thinking about value in doing a home improvement, kitchens and baths are always a good bet. Home improvements are always a safe bet, but if you have a few thousand to spend, spend it on your kitchen or bathrooms because they are the areas that new home buyers are generally most interested in.

If you don?t want to invest money into buying a slipcover for your chair, you can make your own from a bed sheet. Buy a twin or queen-size bed sheet from cotton in the color of your choice. Drape it over your chair, and affix it with safety pins in a fashion that isn?t noticeable.

If you have any doors that squeak upon open or closing, try using a little lubricant. Apply a small amount of commercial lubricant to the door hinge and open and close the door to allow it to enter the crevices. You can also try this with cooking oil, though the results may not last as long as a commercially available lubricant.

Look for cracks or shifting of your home?s concrete slabs or driveway. Slabs on the exterior should always be positioned so that any drainage that occurs faces away from your home?s foundation. Use crack filler to fill in any cracks, or use a silicone caulk. Next, power-wash and then seal.

Instead of purchasing white towels for your bathroom, choose darker colors or patterns. White is a color that picks up everything and needs constant bleaching. You can choose to have your fingertip towels and washcloths to be one color and your actual bath towels to be a different color altogether. It saves a lot of trouble when washing and makes your bathroom appear a lot cleaner and put together.

Carefully examine the benefits of rental equipment before securing it for a home improvement project. Any repair or renovation job can be made faster and easier by renting purpose-built equipment. Such equipment is not always economical, though. Before laying out money for rentals the canny homeowner will weigh the savings in time and effort the equipment offers against the expense the equipment adds to a home improvement project.

If your room feels plain, add interest to it by choosing a heavily patterned rug. Stripes (horizontal or vertical), polka dots and swirls always make for a bold statement in your room. Don?t be afraid to try new things, even if at first glance they don?t match. Try small swatches of a design before you purchase the full product to make sure you like it.

When you are planning a roof replacement, make sure to consider using white tiles. Not only does this give your home an unique look, it also translates into keeping your home cooler. Roof tiles that are a lighter color attract less heat, which reduces the heat that builds up in your attic or upstairs floor. With white tiles, your house is sure to stay cooler during the hotter months of the year.

Buy any home improvement supplies you need in bulk to get larger savings. Ensure that you store your supplies in a cool, dry place where they won?t be damaged so that they will last the length of your project. If you have any neighbors also doing work, consider asking them to go in on a bulk order with you so you both can save.

You have to realize the there is a bigger market for more modern people. Even if you enjoy your old style ovens and refrigerators, you will have to modernize it. Try making everything a similar color like a stainless steel refrigerator and painting your walls a grey or white color.

When it is time to make serious improvements to your home, engage the services of a competent general contractor. Shop around and make careful comparisons. A competent and honest, general contractor, can complete home improvements professionally. A contractor can also perform home improvement work cheaper than you can manage, by doing it yourself.

After reading those tips, you should have a general idea of what it takes to become good at home improvement. What tools will get the job done? Which one do you choose? Despite your answer, know that no matter your skill level, you can always improve upon your home, by yourself.

Lisa Lisa, No Cult Jam: A stepparenting rulebook: uncertainty, regret ...

I don't believe any child ever spends his or her formative years thinking, "When I grow up, I want to be a stepparent." Kids might dream of becoming a mom or dad one day, but the once-removed nature of stepparenting isn't easily to understand, let alone aspire to.

I became a stepparent nearly nearly seven years ago, and like most stepparents, I didn't break down and separate the relationships -- e.g., today I'm getting married, and today I'm also forming important-but-undefined relationships with four other humans. I assumed, as I'm sure most people do, that everything would simply fall into place.

There's so much to be written on the topic. But suffice it to say that in my opinion, step-relationships are difficult because they are so undefined -- to coin a cliche, there's no rulebook. And if you happen to have multiple stepkids, each relationship is going to be unique.

So many variables play into the relationship: Is the child's other parent still living? How much time does the child spend with that person? How does the other parent feel about you, the stepparent, and about your relationship with the child?

How contentious was the parents' divorce, and to what degree was the child involved and impacted? How old is the child, and what's his or her basic personality and temperament? And to put it simply: Does the child like you?

All those translate to roughly 8 million variables that, on most days, can seem to conspire against success.

Stepparenting is not for the faint of heart, the thin of skin, and the easily defeated. It's not the natural order of things, the way things are supposed to transpire. And unless you're very fortunate, it can bring you to your knees on a regular basis.

But then, there are days you have enough presence of mind to think of it like this:

When the child whose life you entered when he was not quite 5 is getting ready to go to his first school dance, and you're ironing his clothes. You know he doesn't really care who is ironing them; he's far more concerned, probably, with trying to figure out how the heck a school dance works, and how, to a larger degree, the whole dating thing works.

But the ironing, to you, exemplifies what being a stepparent is all about: Not Cinderella-type drudgery, but the behind-the-scenes nature of the job. You're not the one who ever gets kudos for anything, nor should you be, and you're good with that. But you've become pretty good at the little unseen things that let the child, and his parents, know that you want to help that child thrive and succeed.

As you iron, you think about teaching that child to read. You think about the eggshells you've walked on so as not to smother him; you think about the time his eyebrows fell out and how you tried not to draw attention to the fact that he looked like an alien. You think about the fact that you can't really hug him, because A. he's 15 and B. he doesn't want you to.

And you think about the time that you broke the news to him that his good friend had died. And because you're not the parent but the stepparent, and you have your own kids to attend to, you had to leave the house immediately after delivering that horrible news. And you think about how you've always somehow regretted the way things had worked out that day, as you drove away and left his dad, who's not always comfortable with feelings, to deal with the most awful thing that had ever happened in the child's life.

You think about the fact that even though this is not your child, you have a history with him. But you've consciously tried not to overstep your bounds, because your own children have stepparents, too, and you know how it feels to be on the other side. So sometimes you've chosen to hang back.

But in the end, although such relationships are complicated, you hope, somehow, that your meager contribution to your stepson's big night -- the ironing of the shirt and the pants -- can convey the fact that even though you never really know what your place is, you really, truly do care.

NLP Diploma and Use of NLP in Education

Article by Peak Performance

Neuro-linguistic programming, or Nlp is better noted for its good results in self improvement however, it finds its application in a variety of specific areas that even include training. programming techniques are located good at education when it comes to improving learning in classes. An trained teacher can contact students in an easy method, reinforce the training atmosphere, and develop an optimistic interaction therefore affecting overall learning goals positively.

To ensure that instructors to rehearse in education, they should be been trained in practicing. Many organizations nowadays offer number of programmes of different period of time, depth, and amount of solidity. This will make the option of right programme difficult. The shorter programmes are made to provide you with just an introduction to neuro longuistic however, to get in-depth understanding and learn how to use the abilities inside your specific area you have to undergo an extended and intensive course for example diploma or specialist course.

You will find usually four amounts of education based upon period of course and depth of training. They?re workshops or training courses, NLP diploma, NLP trainer course, NLP specialist course, and NLP master trainer.

If you?re planning to construct your job in practicing NLP as the business, NLP diploma won?t suffice. You would need to choose NLP specialist course and yourself upgrading within the area. Finally you?d be doing master trainer course. If you?re doing NLP for private development, begin with attending opening workshops or training courses, after which do NLP diploma.

How NLP works well for Education

Among the abilities an instructor should have be good at a class is building rapport using the students. NLP enhances teachers? abilities to construct rapport using the class. An NLP trained teacher can certainly make students feel matching and comfy by using what?s known as matching behavior technique. They might easily align the body gestures and gestures with students in a way that effectiveness of communication together is enhanced. In the same manner they might break the rapport when needed. This method is called mismatching behavior. Thus, it might be simpler to attain overall learning objectives inside a class.

The body gestures may also be used to boost the eye of scholars in class as well as in the subject of debate. Instructors may also judge better if students take curiosity about the class lecture by realizing their body gestures, for instance, their eye actions.

Instructors may also apply NLP techniques that enhance learning around the students. They are able to train them NLP practices that will help students develop their personas, learn to separate the most important thing and what?s not, learn how to prioritize, and employ their time better.

Instructors can learn NLP by doing a bit of professional NLP courses for example NLP diploma or NLP trainer course. They might not have to do master trainer course if they?re not likely to pursue NLP training his or her career objective.
