(AP) ? Residents of Libya's second-largest city warned on Saturday of a "revolution" to get rid of militias and Islamic extremists after protests against the armed groups, spurred in part by the killing of the U.S. ambassador, left at least four dead in an unprecedented eruption of public frustration.

In a sign of how weak the country's post-Moammar Gadhafi leadership remains, authorities tried to stem popular anger, pleading that some of the militias are needed to keep the country safe since the police and army are incapable of doing so.

A mass protest Friday against militias turned into assaults by thousands against the compounds of several armed groups in Benghazi that lasted into early Saturday. Crowds stormed the headquarters of Ansar al-Shariah, an Islamic extremist group suspected in the Sept. 11 attack on the U.S. Consulate here.

They drove out the Ansar gunmen and set fire to cars in the compound ? once a major base for Gadhafi's feared security forces ? and then moved onto the base of a second Islamist militia, the Rafallah Sahati Brigade. Brigade fighters opened fire to keep the protesters at bay.

The state news agency Saturday said four protesters were killed and 70 injured in the overnight violence.

During the day Saturday, there were no new protests, but the city of 1 million in eastern Libya was brimming with anger, rumors and conspiracy theories.

Some militiamen bitterly accused Gadhafi loyalists of fueling the protests. Further adding to the tensions, the bodies of six soldiers were found in the morning dumped on the outskirts of the city, shot through the forehead and their hands cuffed, state TV reported. An army colonel was reported missing, feared kidnapped. Some media reports accused militiamen taking revenge on Gadhafi-era veterans in the military; in contrast, a military spokesman, Ali al-Shakhli, blamed Gadhafi loyalists, saying they were trying to stir up trouble between the public and militias.

Since Gadhafi's ouster and death around a year ago, a series of interim leaders have struggled to bring order to a country that was eviscerated under his 42-year regime, with security forces and the military intentionally kept weak and government institutions hollowed of authority.

The militias, which arose as people took up arms to fight Gadhafi during last year's eight-month civil war, have typified the problem. They bristle with heavy weapons, pay little attention to national authorities and are accused by some of acting like gangs, carrying out killings. Islamist militias often push their demands for enforcement of strict Shariah law.

Yet, authorities need them. The Rafallah Sahati Brigade kept security in Benghazi during national elections this year and guards a large collection of seized weapons at its compound, which was once a Gadhafi residence. Ansar al-Shariah protects Benghazi's main Jalaa Hospital, putting a stop to frequent attacks against it by gunmen.

On Saturday, armed Rafallah Shahati militiamen ? weary from the clashes the night before ? guarded the entrance to their compound, standing next to charred cars. The fighters, some in military uniforms, others dressed in Afghan Mujahedeen-style outfits, were indignant.

"Those you call protesters are looters and thieves," said Nour Eddin al-Haddad, a young man with an automatic rifle slung on his back. "We fought for the revolution. We are the real revolutionaries."

Activists and protesters, however, say it is time the militias disband and the army and security forces take control. Benghazi lawyer Ibrahim al-Aribi said that if the government doesn't act, "there will be a second revolution and the spark will be Benghazi."

"We want stability and rule of law so we can start building the state, but the Tripoli government appears to have not yet quiet understood people's demands," he said.

Farag Akwash, a 22-year-old protester wounded in the arm during the night's clashes, insisted, "We don't want to see militias in the city anymore. We only want to see army and police."

The Sept. 11 attack against the U.S. Consulate that killed Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans galvanized public anger against the militias. Some 30,000 people marched through Benghazi on Friday to the gates of the Ansar al-Shariah compound, demanding the groups disband. The storming of the compound came hours later after the march ended. Protesters also stormed into the Jalaa Hospital, driving out Ansar fighters there.

The unrest comes at a time when the power vacuum in Libya continues. The first post-Gadhafi national elections in May chose a national assembly that is serving as a parliament and that chose the new president, Mohammed el-Megaref, and a prime minister, Mustafa Abushagur. But Abushagur, believed to have struck an alliance with the Muslim Brotherhood, has yet to form a cabinet. Members of the assembly are pressing him to replace the interior and defense ministers in charge of security forces and the military in part because of their failures to bring control.

Authorities were left trying to keep protesters away from what they called "legitimate" militias ? ones that they rely on for security like Rafallah Shahati, which is headed by an Islamist, Ismail al-Salabi, who was reportedly injured in the clashes.

El-Megaref called on protesters to leave alone militias that are "under state legitimacy, and go home."

Omar Humidan, assembly spokesman, acknowledged that militias "have wrong practices ... serve their own agenda and have their own ideology." But he warned that "striking these militias and demanding they disband immediately will have grave consequences."

"These are the ones that preserve security," he said. "The state has a weak army and no way it can fill any vacuum resulting in eviction of these militias. ... The street is upset because of the militias and their infighting. We are worried of the fallout in the absence of those militias. The state must be given the time."

Aside from Rafallah Sahati, there are two other major militias in Benghazi that authorities rely on. One is called Libya Shield, led by Wassam Bin Hamaad, another Islamist and who has interfered several times in separating rival tribes. Another is the Feb. 17 Brigade, led by Fawzi Abu Kataf who is seen as connected to the Muslim Brotherhood. The militia is believed to be the closest to the state authorities and has helped secure borders.

Fathi Fadhali, a prominent Islamist thinker in Benghazi, said the description of some militias as "legitimate" just contradicts common sense.

"How can you be a militia and legitimate at the same time?" he said. "How do you leave a group of extremists taking charge of security? Yes, you can accept their help for the short term but not long-term.

"The state must interfere as soon as possible ? even, excuse me to say it, by using force ? before everything collapses., I am extremely worried."

How to Choose (and Use) a Roadside-Assistance Plan

Over a life of pushing cars to their limits, I have discovered that a ?99 Dodge Grand Caravan will go 125 miles after the low-fuel warning light glows, while the experimental Ford electric van from the ?90s went 41 miles despite a range gauge that predicted 35 miles. I?ve learned that test cars?especially quarter-million-dollar Italian exotics and tuner-modified hot rods?are prone to blowing engines, exploding transmissions, and bursting into flames. And I?ve found that jumping a car high in the air to please a magazine photographer isn?t the best way to keep it running.

Long story short, I?ve come to learn the value of roadside assistance: a tow truck, jumper cables connected to a strong battery, a couple of gallons of gas, and someone who?ll change a flat tire in the rain. Here?s what you should know about getting roadside assistance for your own car.

The basics

Roadside-assistance programs are available from a host of sources. Showing incredible confidence in their products, most carmakers now include at least two years of "free" roadside assistance. Some even offer it for certain used cars. Other no-extra-cost roadside assistance is included in the membership fee of warehouse clubs and other organizations, such as AAA. There are more than a dozen traditional auto clubs, which charge from around $50 a year for a very bare-bones program to about three times that for a vehicle-intensive family with motorcycles and a motorhome.

Free is not the same as good

The roadside assistance that carmakers, insurance companies, and warehouse clubs provide may not fit your needs. Your rescuer may not be an employee of the auto company and surely doesn?t work directly for the big-box club. Even if the help comes straight from the car company, you may not be allowed to have your car towed to an independent repair shop. (Service and parts make up a much larger portion of auto-dealership profits than do sales of new cars, so they want to do the work themselves. Roadside assistance might be free, but you?ve still got to worry about repairs.)

When you need it

Why do carmakers offer such assistance with their new vehicles? If you cut through the marketing benefit, there?s really very little cost to automakers since new cars just don?t break down like they used to. It?s when you?re driving that same car 10 years later with 170,000 on the odometer that you really need the assistance. If you take long trips in an old car, think hard about investing in a roadside-assistance plan.

Are the extras worth it?

Almost every auto club or roadside-service membership comes with a catalog of extras, from hotel discounts to glossy magazines. I haven?t picked up one of their free maps in years, thanks to my nav system, but the motel discount has saved me more than a few dollars.

Your service may vary

After extensive (and accidental) research, I discovered that the Automobile Club of Southern California and its counterpart in the northern part of the state provide rapid, efficient service. However, my limited experience with AAA?s Auto Club of the Carolinas was radically different. I believe my response when calling them on the phone was, "45 minutes to an hour? I can walk to the gas station and back in a half-hour!" (Expletives redacted.) So, as with any product, use the power of the Internet to comparison shop. There are plenty of dissatisfied customers out there ranting online about their bad experiences.

Take out your magnifying glass

The fine print of a roadside-assistance arrangement will tell you if the service will actually be of help to you. Does it cover you in any vehicle, whether you?re a passenger or a driver? Or does it cover only you and only in your car? Does it cover motorcycles, motorhomes, trailers, or all-terrain vehicles? Are you covered in Canada? Is a nearby highway or area excluded? Does the lost-key service or reimbursement cover your newfangled keyless system or only keys that can by made by the hardware store?

Once you know the fine details, think about your normal travel circumstances. For example: If your service provides a seemingly generous 75 miles of free towing, but you spend your time driving your Prius down lonely stretches of Interstate 70 in eastern Colorado, 75 miles is not going to get you to the nearest Toyota dealer, and Hoss at the repair shop in Limon may have never seen a hybrid drive system.

Officer, don?t call Cousin Jake

My motorcycle-riding son recently received two rude awakenings when he unwillingly used his helmet to break out the rear window of a minivan. (Distracted riding hurts.) His first surprise was when he regained consciousness to see a crashed motorcycle and a smashed van. The second was when he received a $300 invoice from the towing service.

This accident happened in rural Virginia, and it seems that the cop called his cousin?s shop?not my son?s roadside-service provider. My son?s company reimbursed only a portion of the bill. If you?re in a crash that disables your vehicle, ask the police to call a tow service covered by your plan and not his relative?s shop. Good luck with that.

I ain?t going there

If you?re going off-road, you?d better be able to get yourself back on-road. Don?t expect any roadside service to leave the pavement, much less venture down a muddy trail to pull your new all-wheel-drive vehicle back to the pavement.

Like tires or a warranty, the proper roadside-assistance package is different for everyone. You?ve got to get to know your car, your area, and to be realistic with yourself about your DIY skills. But if you?re out of gas on Interstate 5, or your spouse?s car won?t start at work, or you have a teen who "bumped" into a curb and collapsed the suspension, you?ll be happy you have the right roadside-assistance plan.

Ann Romney tells Mitt's critics to 'Stop it.' Will they listen?

Presidential campaigns may be hardest on the spouses. In a radio interview Thursday, Ann Romney revealed how much the sniping from Republicans has hurt.

Maybe it?s a maternal thing. But we couldn?t help but sympathize somewhat when we heard Ann Romney?s latest attempt to defend her husband from his Republican critics, who have been vacillating between morose and merciless.

Yes, we know, Mitt isn?t Ann?s son. But there was something about the way she snapped ?Stop it? that called to mind nothing so much as a mom who?s ?had it up to here? with the snide comments being lobbed from the backseat.

In an interview with Radio Iowa Thursday, Mrs. Romney tried to lay down the law:

?Stop it. This is hard. You want to try it? Get in the ring. This is hard and, you know, it?s an important thing that we?re doing right now, and it?s an important election, and it is time for all Americans to realize how significant this election is and how lucky we are to have someone with Mitt?s qualifications and experience and know-how to be able to have the opportunity to run this country.?

The trouble with these comments, of course, is that they probably will give more fodder to critics who see Ann Romney as a clueless elitist. Telling Americans they just need to realize how ?lucky? they are that someone as talented as her husband is willing to be their leader sounds sort of like when she told reporters that she and her husband had released ?all you people need to know? when it came to their taxes. It?s got more than a whiff of noblesse oblige.

Still, as we said, it?s hard not to sympathize. For one thing, nearly everyone agrees that presidential campaigns are probably hardest on the spouses. Their schedule is nearly as brutal, but they aren?t necessarily as practiced in keeping on message. (Remember an irritated Teresa Heinz Kerry, Sen. John Kerry's wife, telling a reporter to ?shove it??)

Understandably, they also tend to take all the criticism more personally ? particularly when it comes from would-be allies.

During the GOP primary campaign, Anita Perry, wife of Texas Gov. Rick Perry, got teary at an event with voters and confessed that it had been ?a rough month,? after her husband had come under fire for some poor debate performances (and this was?before?the infamous ?oops? moment). "We are being brutalized by our opponents, and our own party," she said.

What?s most interesting about Mrs. Romney?s comments is that ? besides revealing just how difficult the past few weeks have been for the Romney family ? she also may have inadvertently hit on the biggest factor behind her husband?s current predicament: He was never the party?s first choice, but no one else wanted to ?get in the ring.?

It?s no secret that Mitt Romney has never been beloved by conservatives. The GOP nominated him because, to be blunt, he was all they had ? the best (by far) of a weak field. And for all the sniping now about how ?if Republicans can?t win against an incumbent as weak as President Obama, with an economy as weak as this? ? well, it?s worth remembering that a whole line of potential A-list candidates, from Jeb Bush to Chris Christie to Marco Rubio, took a look at these same conditions and decided to pass.

So, Republicans can bemoan Romney?s ?incompetent? campaign and his ?tin-eared? candidacy. And we?re not saying they?re wrong. But on some level, his wife is also right: Running for president is hard. And Romney was willing to take a shot, when other party leaders were not.

One South African mine strike ends, but Amplats badly hit

MARIKANA, South Africa (Reuters) - Thousands reported for work at Lonmin's Marikana mine on Thursday, ending a strike in which 46 people died, but at rival Amplats miners barricaded a street with burning tires and the firm said it had been badly hit by a walkout to demand higher pay.

A police helicopter hovered above a shanty town near Amplats mines at Rustenburg, 100 km (70 miles) northwest of Johannesburg, and armed officers backed by armored vehicles and water cannon were on stand-by.

There were no reports of clashes but Anglo American Platinum, or Amplats, the world's top producer of the precious metal, reported only one in five of its workers had turned up at its Rustenberg mines.

It was clear the wave of wildcat strikes in the sector had not ended with the signing this week of a pay deal at smaller platinum producer Lonmin.

The unrest, with roots in a bloody turf war between an upstart union and the dominant National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), has sent world platinum prices soaring.

The police shooting of 34 Lonmin strikers on August 16 - the bloodiest security incident since the end of apartheid in 1994 - also piled pressure on President Jacob Zuma, who was forced to call in the army to back up stretched police.

And economists say the precedent set by the big Lonmin pay rises could ripple through an economy already saddled with uncompetitive labor costs, stoking inflation and curbing the central bank's ability to cut interest rates to boost sputtering growth.

"The company continues to be disappointed with the low turnout rate at four of its Rustenburg mines which are currently reporting less than 20 percent attendance," Amplats said in a statement.

It said its Rustenburg "process operations" had resumed full production but the mood among strikers was uncompromising.

"We'll buy 20 liters of petrol and if police get violent, we'll make petrol bombs and throw them at them," said Lawrence Mudise, an Amplats rock driller, holding a sign demanding 16,700 rand ($2,000) a month, a hefty premium on his current salary.

Police fired tear gas and stun grenades to disperse a crowd of men carrying spears and machetes in a squatter camp near the site on Wednesday.

"We'll not go to work until we get what we want. Our kids have been shot at, our families have been terrorized and brutalized, but we are not going back to work," one miner, who did not wish to be named, told Reuters.

LONMIN JUBILATION

A few kilometers away at Lonmin's Marikana mine, thousands of workers reported for their first shift since early August, ending one of the bloodiest bouts of industrial action in the 18 years since the end of white-minority rule.

Many shouted "We are reporting for work" in Fanagalo, a pidgin mix of Zulu, English and other African languages.

The miners were in jubilant mood after securing wage rises of up to 22 percent. "I feel very happy that I can go back to work now," said Nqukwe Sabulelo, a rock-driller at the mine. "I'm going to live well now."

The hefty wage settlement has stirred up trouble in the gold sector, with some 15,000 miners at the KDC West operation of Gold Fields, the world's fourth largest bullion producer, holding an illegal strike.

The Gold Fields protest is fuelled by discontent with the local leadership of the dominant National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and their stance has been given fresh impetus by the Lonmin settlement.

Gold Fields said this week it would not entertain demands for a minimum wage of 12,500 rand despite losing 1,400 ounces a day - close to 15 percent of group production.

NUM General Secretary Frans Baleni said the union, a key political ally of the ruling African National Congress, was trying to help.

The stand-off threatens the NUM-dominated collective wage-bargaining that has typified South African industrial relations since apartheid.

"We are trying to narrow the demands and get them to go back while we negotiate," Baleni told reporters.

Part of the African National Congress-led ruling alliance, the country's biggest group of unions this week acknowledged the challenge posed by the rise of the militant AMCU union and the need for change.

"The labor movement needs to renew itself," said Zwelinzima Vavi, general secretary of the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU).

"There is the danger of finding ourselves ... outflanked by the new independent unions which are emerging as a result of dissatisfaction from the shop floor."
