Continuing SPOTIFY'S efforts to provide innovative, engaging music-based apps, the WOW app aggregates Christian music playlists for the first time. Available playlists for the WOW app include Hot at Christian Radio, Hot at Gospel Radio, Songs To Get You Through The Day, Summertime Playlist, Top Worship Songs, festival & tour playlists, and playlists that feature the best from artists like CHRIS TOMLIN, CASTING CROWNS and FRANCESCA BATTISTELLI, among others. Childhood Obesity Increases Kids' Risk for Heart Disease Later ...

(PCM) As if you needed another reason to keep your kids healthy and active, a new study suggests that obese children develop risk factors for heart disease that usually aren?t seen until adulthood. That?s pretty scary. The risk factors ? including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, high blood sugar levels and even thickening of the heart muscle ? can boost a child?s risk of heart disease by up to 40 percent, say British researchers.

Lead researcher Claire Friedemann, of the department of primary care health sciences at Oxford University reported:

?We really need to take action on childhood obesity from as young an age as possible. We have shown that obesity is not just about appearance but could have a long-term effect on the health of the child. By not fully tackling the problem, we could lose the progress that has been made in treating heart disease in recent years.?

Researchers found that, compared to normal-weight children, obese children had significantly higher blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar levels as well as thicker heart muscles, which can increase the risk of heart disease and stroke by 30 to 40 percent when they reach adulthood. (Source)

Being obese in childhood may significantly worsen the risk factors and health consequences associated with adult obesity, including the risk of diabetes, premature cardiovascular disease, and death.

?Although the size of the effect that obesity has on the health of children?s hearts is worrying, the good news is that they can all be improved with a healthy diet and exercise,? Friedemann said. ?These habits are much easier to begin in childhood and carry through to adulthood.?

Kids are never too young to learn proper nutrition and how to make healthy lifestyle choices!

AP-GfK Poll: Most see health law being implemented

WASHINGTON (AP) ? They may not like it, but they don't see it going away. About 7 in 10 Americans think President Barack Obama's health care law will go fully into effect with some changes, ranging from minor to major alterations, an Associated Press-GfK poll finds.

Just 12 percent say they expect the Affordable Care Act ? "Obamacare" to dismissive opponents ? to be repealed completely.

The law ? covering 30 million uninsured, requiring virtually every legal U.S. resident to carry health insurance and forbidding insurers from turning away the sick ? remains as divisive as the day it passed more than two years ago. After surviving a Supreme Court challenge in June, its fate will probably be settled by the November election, with Republican Mitt Romney vowing to begin repealing it on Day One and Obama pledging to diligently carry it out.

That's what the candidates say. But the poll found Americans are converging on the idea that the overhaul will be part of their lives in some form, although probably not down to its last clause and comma.

Forty-one percent said they expect it to be fully implemented with minor changes, while 31 percent said they expect to see it take effect with major changes. Only 11 percent said they think it will be implemented as passed.

Americans also prefer that states have a strong say in carrying out the overhaul. The poll found that 63 percent want states to run new health insurance markets called "exchanges." They would open for business in 2014, signing up individuals and small businesses for taxpayer-subsidized private coverage. With many GOP governors still on the sidelines, the federal government may wind up operating the exchanges in half or more of the states, an outcome only 32 percent of Americans want to see, according to the poll.

The poll, developed with researchers from Stanford University and the University of Michigan, also found an enduring generation gap, with people 65 and older most likely to oppose the bill and those younger than 45 less likely to be against it.

"People are sort of averaging out the candidates' positions," said Harvard School of Public Health professor Robert Blendon, who tracks polling on health care issues. "The presidential candidates are saying there's a stark choice, but when you ask the voters, they don't believe that the whole bill will be repealed or implemented as it is today in law."

Republicans remain overwhelmingly opposed to the overhaul and in favor of repeal. But only 21 percent said they think that will actually come about.

Romney supporter Toni Gardner, 69, a retired school system nurse from Louisville, Ky., said that until a few weeks ago she was sure her candidate fully supported repeal, as she does.

But then Romney said in an interview there are a number of things he likes in the law that he would put into practice, including making sure that people with pre-existing medical problems can get coverage. The Romney campaign quickly qualified that, but the candidate's statement still resonates.

"If Romney gets in, he'll go with parts of it," Gardner said, "and there are parts of that he won't go with."

Gardner thinks expanding coverage will cost too much and may make it harder to get an appointment with a doctor. Besides, she doesn't believe the government can handle the job. She's covered by Medicare ? a government-run health system ? but says "that wasn't a choice that I had."

At 26, Santa Monica, Calif., web developer Vyki Englert has only bare-bones health insurance coverage. Her parents, a preschool teacher and a self-employed photographer, are uninsured. Englert says she thinks the law will largely go into effect as passed. (Among 18- to 29-year-olds, 60 percent think it will be implemented with only minor changes or none at all.)

Englert says that she supports guaranteeing coverage to people with health problems and that provisions such as broader coverage for birth control will help younger women such as her.

"I kind of see a day-to-day way where this law could benefit me," she said. Englert says the health care law dovetails with a trend toward consumerism in her generation. Older Americans "don't have the context of the young people," she added. "They are looking more at the theoretical impact on the budget and the country."

Overall, the poll found Americans divided on the question of repeal, with neither side able to claim a majority. Forty-nine percent said the health care law should be repealed completely, while 44 percent said it should be implemented as written.

The notion that the law will be implemented with changes, captured in the poll, mirrors a discussion going on behind the scenes in Washington, particularly among some Republicans.

"Whoever wins the election, the (health care law) is going to be modified," Mark McClellan, who ran Medicare under former President George W. Bush, said in a recent interview.

Congressional Republicans say if tax increases are on the table in a budget negotiation with a re-elected Obama next year, changes to the health care law ? including possible delays in implementation ? also must be considered. For now, White House officials refuse to be drawn in on that question.

Some parts of the law already are in effect; its big coverage expansion for the uninsured doesn't come until 2014.

Public opinion about the law itself has barely budged since the summer of 2010, soon after it passed. At the time, 30 percent supported the law. It's now 32 percent. And 40 percent opposed the overhaul. That's now 36 percent.

And misconceptions about the law that reigned two years ago continue to live on, including former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's widely debunked charge that it would create "death panels" to decide on care for the elderly and disabled. In 2010, 39 percent believed the law would set up committees to review individual medical records and decide who gets care paid for by the government. Forty-one percent currently hold that view, according to the poll.

The poll asked people to say whether 18 different items were in the law or not and to rate how certain they were about their answers. Just 14 percent were right most of the time and sure of it.

Still, knowledge about what the law actually does is growing. More people are aware of provisions that allow adult children to stay on their parents' coverage until age 26, impose insurance mandates on individuals and businesses, and protect those with pre-existing medical conditions.

The poll was conducted Aug. 3-13 and involved interviews with 1,334 randomly chosen adults nationwide. It has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3.4 percentage points.

The survey was conducted online by GfK using its KnowledgePanel sample, which first chose people for the study using randomly generated telephone numbers and home addresses. Once people were selected to participate, they were interviewed online. Participants without Internet access were provided it for free.

Google Maps on web and Android adds bus routing for Japan, guides teddy bears quickly video

Virtually anyone who's been to a Japanese city knows that subways and trains might be closely associated with their country, but also that they only form a part of the mass transit picture. With that in mind, Google has quietly rolled out an update to Google Maps data for Android and the web that supports bus navigation in Japan, including schedules. It's a simple addition, but an important one for those who can't always get to where they're going on rails -- like teddy bears, according to Google's video. We just want to know who makes that kawaii case for the Galaxy Nexus.

Web design trends for Start-ups ? Stimulus Capital Ideas

If you are a start-up, one of the?essentials?you need to have is an online presence to market your business not only locally but globally. To do this effectively, consider the following trends that would help benefit your business do this effectively.

feature-web-design-thumbWhen Melbourne-based web business RedBubble decided it was time for a revamp of its site, the process wasn?t a quick and easy one.

?

The business, which acts as an online marketplace for artistic creations, spent 18 months rethinking its strategy from top to bottom before deciding upon a new look.

?

RedBubble?s?approach may seem time consuming, but it?s indicative of a trend that no start-up can ignore, even if doesn?t consider the internet to be its primary channel.

?

The days of being able to simply slap your brand online and hope for the sales to start flowing in are long gone. Small businesses not only have to get themselves online ? which is still a struggle for many Australian SMEs ? but closely follow what consumers are reacting well to, or get left behind.

?

?Businesses tend to think about functionality first, but beyond that you need to have some sort of emotional connection with your customers,? says Martin Hosking, CEO of RedBubble. ?That?s been the case since the first automobiles came along and is the case now.?

?

?Facebook is a functional, but people connect to it, so goes?Groupon?? it?s very clear what it is, how people can get value from it. They focus on making the experience good.?

?

So how do you get this kind of engagement with customers? Adam Franklin, head of digital agency?BlueWire Media, says that the best sites are moving towards a simplicity in look and feel that start-ups would do well to ape.

?

?Around 75% of people look for information when they go to sites, so sites that have a simple path towards the information they need do well, as do sites with blogs,? he explains.

?

?If customers can make a purchase decision on the first visit, that?s great, but usually they need education. Therefore, the best sites do that first step of education very well ? they are clear as to what they are and who they are for, they have resources such as eBooks, market reports and other downloads. They don?t bombard people with options.?

?

We asked Hosking and Franklin to pick out the key trends currently taking hold in the web design industry. Here are their essential lessons.

?

?

1. Clutter is going

?

site1

?

Many of the best websites out there continue to contain lots of information, but they don?t feel the need to throw all of it at potential customers at once.

?

Where once the desire to display as many links, flashing buttons and graphics at users was in vogue, the trend is now to offer a more stripped back, minimal experience.

?

?Important buttons are getting bigger while the clutter is going,? Franklin says. ?The best sites are very clear about the one thing they do and what they want you to do. They have an obvious call to action and have a good understanding who their buyers are.?

?

?Don?t think that the second action of a web user after seeing your site is to pick up the phone to get more details from you. The second action is to go to your competitor to see how you compare to them.?

?

?Consumers are doing all of their own research and are making buying decisions without even talking to businesses. Therefore, you need to provide the information they are looking for and avoid all other distractions.?

?

?

2. There?s a rethink on branding

?

Your website is a great way to build your brand and, with some decent SEO activity, you can turn it into your best marketing tool.

?

But don?t overestimate the power of branding in the mind of customers. They are searching for the best product or service for them ? in a web cluttered with options, the provider is almost secondary.

?

Hosking says that RedBubble recognised this trend by making its brand less obvious, most notably to shrinking its logo to a mere ?RB?.

?

?Most traditional retailers want to put their brand on everything, but the new commerce model requires you to almost put it in the background,? he explains.

?

?That?s why sites that focus on content, such as?Pinterest, are doing well. You?ve got to recognise who or what is really creating the value here ? is it your massive logo or is it the product the customer wants to buy??

?

site1

?This feeds through to having your content shared by people online. Facebook asks me to be a fan of NAB ? why the hell would I want to be a fan of my bank? Similarly, we realise it?s not really about RedBubble, it?s about the t-shirt or piece of art people are interested in.?

?

?Have a clear story about who you are but put what you offer to the forefront. That?s what customers are interested in.?

?

3. That said, it?s not just a sales channel

?

site1

Once you fully understand who your customers are, you can tailor your offering to them. But don?t just think that your site should be a one-way selling machine.

?

Long-term sales growth is driven by genuine engagement with consumers, rather than just throwing offers at them. This spans the design, social media and content aspects of your website.

?

?Most Australian sites still focus on a narrow functionality, in a very debranded way,? says Hosking.

?

?You need to get a designer in early, along with your business brain, to think through the brand and how you?ll be speaking to people.?

?

?The design needs to convey who you are and who you?re talking to. You have to deliver on your brand promise, whatever that is. It shouldn?t really be lowest price ? you need to offer more than that. Target can offer kids? T-shirts for $4 ? that?s not us, and it shouldn?t be most start-ups.?

?

Offer something of value to users beyond your product or service. Consider embedding competitions, games or calculators into your site.

?

Encourage them to interact with you via social media and try to grasp what interests and excites them. Even if it doesn?t directly lead to a sale, tapping into this will do wonders for your long-term image.

?

Also, think about your packaging ? RedBubble?s redesign allows it to easily get ?RB? onto its packaging, an important branding exercise for online-only brands that don?t have the same amount of customer touch points as physical retailers.

?

?

4. The time and money involved is increasing

?

The main advantage of launching a web-only business is the cost ? stripped of the overheads of premises, fixtures and fittings and equipment, online start-ups can run a very efficient model.

?

However, as selling via the internet becomes ingrained within businesses and rises in popularity among consumers, the costs are beginning to rise.

?

In order to stand out from an increasingly cluttered field, you will need a striking design, easy user experience and a secure payment platform that doesn?t fall over or get hacked into on a regular basis.

?

All of these things cost money. If you baulk at the cost, you should ask yourself how important the web is to your business and whether you?d invest a large amount in another area of your operations that?s of equal value.

?

Hosking says that in addition to the 18 months taken to overhaul RedBubble, he also spent $200,000 on market research and design, which doesn?t include development costs.

?

?It?s a big outlay for a small company like ours,? he admits. ?But that?s what we had to pay to really show what the brand meant to customers and how customers use us. I can?t put a figure on what the return will be, you can?t easily quantify that.?

?

?But we want to be a global brand for those that aspire to creative individualism. In Australia, brands such as Billabong and Quiksilver have done that in the past and we want to be in that category. And that takes investment.?

?

?

5. Good ideas are spanning different industries

?

site4

The best way to find out what works and what doesn?t is, of course, to take a wander through the internet yourself.

?

What you should find is that cutting edge design and great useability isn?t confined to a niche of cool consumer-facing brands ? online excellence is filtering down to businesses of all shapes and sizes, across a range of sectors.

?

Asked for standout sites for start-ups to reference, Franklin picks out US marketing software firm?HubSpot, saying: ?The homepage is very clear, they have lots of information online but in a big, clear font. It?s clear what they are and they do a good job of building trust by offering a free trial of their software.?

?

Franklin?s other choice is Sydney accountant?Kelly & Partners: ?It delivers something you maybe wouldn?t expect from an accountancy firm. It has a blog which allows you to get to know the company and it has a range of free tools available via the homepage. It also makes it clear how you can interact with the brand.?

?

Hosking picks out design site?Fab.com?and fashion hub?Gilt?as eCommerce sites that have got it right.

?

?Both are clean, clear and have a clear segment of the audience they can talk to,? he says. ?They are brave about their content by offering a richer visual experience. They are making a conscious effort to be more beautiful.?

New Foreclosure Activity and what you need to know about the Market

The market action index is a very important tool that we have supplied for our buyers and sellers of Santa Clarita real estate. ?In essence it tells our buyers and sellers what type of real estate market we are in within the Santa Clarita Valley cities.

Numbers closer to 30 indicate a sellers real estate market, where properties are selling at over asking price and where inventory is low with a lot of buyers wanting to press the trigger on buying homes.

Below 30 would indicate that we are in a Buyer?s market ? lots of inventory and where sellers are accepting offers at less than fair market value.

To visit our Market Action Index pages that we have prepared for our Santa Clarita real estate clientele ? go to the Main website for Santa Clarita Real Estate and type the letters ?MAI? into the MacBoX. ?That way you will be taken to the pages where we have embedded the links to the specific MAI?s for each of the Santa Clarita Valley cities.

Just a reminder ? make sure you are working with local Santa Clarita Real Estate experts. Not those that say they are but those that prove they are through the written word.

Here is the latest intel for the Foreclosure Alerts in the Santa Clarita Valley: ?Notice the amounts of Notice of Defaults have increased from our last Foreclosure Alert report for the Pre-foreclosures in the Santa Clarita Valley Cities. ?If you are interested in anyone of the properties below or that you have found on our?Foreclosure?Radar System ? let me know and we will get it set up for a one party show.

Short film making begins at Burton Center for Arts & Technology ...

The Burton Center for Arts and Technology is into a program of short film making, a program new to the Roanoke Valley and likely new to the state of Virginia.

Burton, which is under Roanoke County Schools and is located in Salem, has a Center for the Performing Arts directed by Carol Webster. The idea for film making has been developing for a year now and this past April the actual plans for the new project was introduced by Mrs. Webster and guest artist Nancy Stafford.

The project began in earnest this September, first with guidance by guest artist Deanna Lund and then the last week in September an intensive three day workshop on film making. The workshop was conducted by John David Ware, founder and president of the 168 Film Project, which has been responsible for 600 short films being produced, many of them award winners.

Mr. Ware worked with students on every phase of film making from pitching ideas, script writing, site location, acting, filming and editing. Burton?s Mass Communication Department under Eric Salo also took part and will be heavily involved. There is a central theme for this year?s work?bullying, a major problem across the nation.

The climax of this year?s program will be April 12 to 13, 2013 when the Roanoke County Parks, Recreation and Tourism Department under Wendi Schultz will have an Arts and Entertainment Conference. There will be a film festival in which short films will compete for awards, the bulk of the program being held at Burton on April 13. There will be several film stars and film makers present for this event, including Ms. Stafford who will be in early to help Mrs. Schultz and Mrs. Webster coordinate the event.
