Fast Girls star Lenora Crichlow with Exclusive interview ...

Health and Fitness spoke to Fast Girls star Lenora Crichlow, 27, about getting fit for the role and her Olympic legacy.

The British movie Fast Girls, directed by first-time director Regan Hall, tells the story of a British female 4 x 100 metres relay team as they train for the World Championships, complete with bitter rivalries. It will be released on DVD on October 8, 2012.

When watching the film, it?s hard not to be drawn to the lean, toned physique of Lenora, 27, who plays gritty underdog Shania Andrews. Coached by Olympic sprinters Jeanette Kwakye and Shani Anderson for six weeks before filming, Lenora and her co-stars had to train to near-Olympic levels of fitness to fulfil their roles as Team GB?s 100m relay hopefuls. Best known for her part playing Annie in the supernatural drama Being Human, London-born Lenora spills the beans on the Fast Girls and how it?s affected her life.

H&F: You had a physically tough role playing Shania in Fast Girls. What lengths did you go to in order to prepare for it?

Lenora: ?I just tried to do my best. I?m not an athlete, so to train for the role, I had to start from scratch. I did an awful lot of interval training, both running and on the bike, which was all about pushing my boundaries, as well as over 500 sit-ups each day. I also did regular running drills and weights sessions to improve my strength and posture. I must admit some days it was very hard to get out of bed and start training, so I did surprise myself with how hard I worked.

Hafeez all set to unleash spinners against Sri Lanka ? Cricket News Roundup ? Part III ? October 4, 2012

Pakistan skipper Mohammad Hafeez has vowed to continue counting on his spin attack as they gear up to take on Sri Lanka in the first semi-final of the ongoing World T20, at Colombo today.

While speaking to media reporters at the pre-match press conference, Hafeez credited slow bowlers for his side?s progress to the fourth successive World T20 semi-finals, and was confident the spin attack will help them outdo the hosts on Thursday.

?We as a team are blessed with some very good spinners and that's the main reason why we are doing well in this format,? said Hafeez, an off-spinner himself, on the eve of the match. ?Our spinners are of quality and they have proved it in every condition,? he added further.

Sri Lankan captain Mahela Jayawardene is confident his batsmen will efficiently counter Pakistan spin attack, come the first World T20 semi-final at R Premadasa Stadium, on Thursday.

Pakistan have been relying heavily on its spinners in the marquee tournament so far, and are expected to continue with the strategy in the knock out game. But it is being anticipated that Saeed Ajmal-led Pakistan spin attack might struggle against the Sri Lanka batsmen, who play spin well.

"We have played each other quite frequently and there have been good contests," said Jayawardene on the eve of the crunch game. "We have some quality guys and we play spin quite well. We need to make sure that certain things we execute, we execute it properly," he added further.

Veteran spinner Muttiah Muralitharan reckons Pakistan is the main obstacle between Sri Lanka and the World T20 trophy.

While speaking to media reporters on the eve of the first World T20 semi-final in Colombo, the legendary off-spinner said that Sri Lanka will have 90 per cent chances of winning the latest edition of the World T20 championship, if they could manage to defeat Pakistan on Thursday.

?If Sri Lanka beat Pakistan in tomorrow's semi-final in Colombo, they have a 90 per cent chance of winning the World Twenty20 title,? Muralitharan told the?Evening Standard?on Wednesday. It may be noted here that Sri Lanka have qualified for the tournament semis at the back of two wins and one defeat in the Super Eight stage, while the home side had finished that stage unbeaten and will be high on confidence.

Indian knowledge workers find document ... - India Business Edition

?Adobe Systems Incorporated (Nasdaq:ADBE) today revealed the findings of a survey that was conducted among over 950 knowledge workers (including business, IT and technical professionals), representing 775 organisations across India. The survey aimed to gauge the state of productivity and collaboration among Indian knowledge workers. Findings indicated a widespread impact on productivity owing to document-related challenges. The survey findings also indicate a high degree of concern for document security among respondents. Finally, the survey found an overwhelming majority confirming that they expect to increasingly use their smartphones and tablets not just to access but also to create, manage and review documents in the near future.

The survey consisted of specific questions around the issues of productivity, collaboration, security and mobility in the context of document and document exchange, and was conducted in September, 2012.

Commenting on the findings of the survey Umang Bedi, Managing Director ? South Asia, Adobe said, ?India is a knowledge economy, and as such, lost productivity has serious economic implications. In this increasingly complex and interconnected digital world, it is imperative that organizations and knowledge workers adopt documentation tools that allow them to be productive and collaborative in a highly-secured manner.?

?Also given the increasing penetration of mobile devices like smartphones and tablets it is equally important that organizations enable their workforce to create, manage and review content on these devices,? said Umang.

Detailed findings of this survey that was released alongside Adobe?s launch of Acrobat? XI (see separate press release), are as below:

1.Productivity continues to be a challenge for Indian knowledge workers:

52% of respondents spend at least one-quarter of their work week creating and managing documents

47% spend more than one-quarter of their work week dealing with document-related issues like: searching email attachments, copying data from one document format to other, struggling with incompatible document formats, etc.
58% of knowledge workers feel they are less or not productive at all with the current set of documentation and productivity tools that their organizations use.

2.Collaboration over documents is a big pain point:

51% of Indian knowledge workers spend more than one-quarter of their time at work manually gathering and analyzing data from disparate sources like forms, etc.
59% feel their degree of collaboration through documents is neither high nor good enough. This mirrors the finding about a similar number of knowledge workers wanting a lot more from their documentation and collaboration tools
An overwhelming 80% of respondents indicate that they lose valuable time trying to get documents approved and signed, indicating a low awareness and usage of tools like digital signature.

3.Document security is a very real issue for knowledge workers:

47% of respondents have faced an instance of breach in document security like information leak, sensitive document reaching to a wrong recipient, etc.
62% respondents expressed a very high or high degree of concern for document security while only 43% believed they are prepared to handle the issue
In contrast to the above two points, 73% confirmed that their organizations have well-defined document security policy.

4.Mobility will define the future of collaboration:

68% of knowledge workers surveyed confirmed that they use their smartphones/tablets to access documents
58% already use their devices to create, manage and review documents
90% confirmed that in the near future they will increasingly use smartphones and tablets for document creation, management and review.

Neurofeedback offers effective treatment for bedwetting

ScienceDaily (Oct. 4, 2012) ? For children, nighttime bedwetting is a common problem, often requiring intervention. The use of medicine and other treatments has met with limited success. Targeting neuronal activities of the brain through neurofeedback, however, has shown promising results.

The current issue of the journal Biofeedback includes an article on the use of quantitative electroencephalography (QEEG)-guided neurofeedback to treat bedwetting, or enuresis. The author reports 11 successful cases, and no failures, thus far.

A variety of causes contribute to enuresis, including being a deep sleeper, being sensitive to foods, and having a low functional bladder capacity. Only 15 percent of children who wet the bed during the night will overcome the problem without any intervention. When traditional treatments end, bedwetting often recurs.

QEEG-guided neurofeedback exercises areas of the brain, normalizing behaviors through consistent feedback. While little or no activity was seen at the Oz site in the mid-occipital region of the brain among non-enuretic individuals, those with enuresis registered low-frequency activity in this area. Eleven patients received neurofeedback training for five to seven sessions, 20 minutes per session, twice a week.

Bedwetting stopped for all 11 of these neurofeedback patients and has not recurred for at least 12 months. The author surmises that cortical control of emptying the bladder is defective in enuretic individuals. Oz beta training can enhance that control quickly and sustain it over the long term.

Neweraprogress reports Amherst County High School students will build a Habitat for Humanity modular house at the school in Amherst, Virginia and site it in Madison Heights, just outside Lynchburg. Funded by grants, the more experienced students will instruct the newer ones in producing the two modules under the watchful eye of building trades teacher Roy Prior. Noting the involvement of many disciplines, he says the agriculture students will help with landscaping, the arts students with painting, and the building trades students with design. As MHProNews has learned, the house will take five months to complete. Prior says, ?One of the best things I can do for them is to help them accomplish something positive and be proud of it.?

Chicago Police officers enter an area where authorities are busy chopping down 6-to-8-foot tall marijuana plants that they found growing on a chunk of land the size of two football fields on the city's South Side Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2012. Officers on routine patrol in a police helicopter spotted the crop Tuesday under a canopy of trees about 3 miles from their hangar. (AP Photo/Teresa Crawford)

(AP) ? In Chicago, a bustling urban metropolis where skyscrapers are as likely to sprout up as anything a farmer might plant, someone decided there was just enough room to grow something a little more organic: Marijuana.

The plants grew even taller than the tallest Chicago Bulls. However, just days before the crop on a chunk of land the size of two football fields would have been ready to harvest, a police officer and county sheriff's deputy in a helicopter spotted it as they headed back to their hangar about three miles away.

On Wednesday, a day after the discovery of the largest marijuana farm anyone at the police department can remember, officers became farmers for a day as they began to chop down about 1,500 marijuana plants that police said could have earned the growers as much as $10 million.

No arrests had been made as of Wednesday, and police were still trying to determine who owns the property that housed the grow site on the city's far South Side. But police said they were hopeful that because of the size of the operation, informants or others might provide tips about those involved, including a man seen running from the area as the helicopter swooped low.

James O'Grady, the commander of the department's narcotics division, said they've never seen anything like it before, in part because Chicago's harsh winters mean growers have a lot less time to plant, grow and harvest marijuana than their counterparts in less inclement places such as California and Mexico. The bumper crop was likely planted in spring, O'Grady said.

Add to that the urban sprawl: there are few spots in Chicago where such an operation could go unnoticed because of all the buildings, roads and residents. The growers took pains to ensure their crop was largely hidden by a canopy of trees and surrounding vegetation.

"Somebody put a lot of thought into it," O'Grady said. "But they probably didn't anticipate the helicopter."

Chicago Police Officer Stan Kuprianczyk, a pilot, said police helicopters flew "over it all the time," to and from their hangar, without spying the grow site. Yet somehow, a number of factors came together to allow Cook County Sheriff's Deputy Edward Graney to spot the plants.

"We had the right altitude, the right angle, the right sunlight, and I happened to be glancing down," said Graney. He said he initially spotted five plants or so through the trees before he asked Kuprianczyk to circle around for a closer look.

"We just happened to be right over a small hole in the trees and we looked down," Kuprianczyk said.

They also happened to have the right training, Graney said, explaining that just a few weeks earlier a much smaller operation in suburban Chicago prompted them to fly over and videotape the scene so they might be able to recognize marijuana if they ever saw it from the air again.

So, by the time Graney spotted the marijuana plants, which are a much brighter shade of green than the surrounding vegetation, he had a pretty good idea what he was looking at.

Superintendent Garry McCarthy, whose officers are more used to intercepting shipments of marijuana grown elsewhere or discovering hydroponic growing operations inside buildings, said the discovery of the marijuana is significant in a larger fight against street violence.

Those involved with narcotics, whether it is marijuana, heroin or cocaine, purchase firearms with their profits and have shown they're willing to use them to protect their business, he said.

"That's where the violence comes in, the competition for the markets," he said.
