CofC softball spent a day honoring and cherishing the elderly at the Carter May HomeCHARLESTON, S.C. ? The College of Charleston softball team continued its outstanding community service initiative with a day spent honoring and cherishing the elderly at the Carter May Home in West Ashley.

The Cougars spent the afternoon visiting with the community?s senior citizens and gained the opportunity to hear their life experiences while sharing a few of their own.

This project was one of many the team will be involved with this year. The players have taken this initiative on their shoulders and are collaborating under their own leadership to continue the involvement effort.

This particular project was organized by the junior class and headed by infielder Blakeney Sitton (Tucson, Ariz.).

?We had a wonderful afternoon listening to the stories of the many wise citizens at the home,? said Sitton. ?It was nice to be able to give back to a community that supports us in so many ways.?

In addition to exchanging stories, the players partook in an ice cream social and played ?cornhole? and other games with the residents. ?

?We got to meet some really cool people who have been through so many things in their lives,? said Maria Zavala, also a junior infielder. ?Being able to put a smile on their faces was just the icing on the cake for an afternoon well spent.? ??

?This was truly a wonderful experience for our team,? said head coach Shelly Hoerner.??It was so much fun to just sit and chat with the elderly and see a different perspective from their eyes.? They were so excited to tell us story after story.? The smiles on their faces told a story of their own? happiness!

?I?m so proud of Blakeney for doing such a great job of this. She coordinated everything and it all ran smoothly. I?m proud of how she wanted to take this event and run with it.?

CofC is back on the field this weekend with the second installment of their fall scrimmage sessions. The Cougars host Spartanburg Methodist in a noon doubleheader at Patriots Point. Admission is free to the public.

NJ teachers accused of 'hooking up' with students

By NBCPhiladelphia.com, NBC News staff and wire reports

Three New Jersey high school teachers have been arrested and accused of having inappropriate sexual relations with three female students, while two school administrators face charges for allegedly covering up the scandal, authorities said Thursday.

Teachers Jeffrey Logandro, Daniel Michielli and Nicholas Martinelli of Triton High School in the Philadelphia suburb of Runnemede voluntarily turned themselves into the authorities on Thursday, NBCPhiladelphia.com reported.

Read the story on NBCPhiladelphia.com

Principal Catherine DePaul and Vice Principal Jernee Kollock also facing charges of official misconduct for allegedly knowing about the sexual allegations and not reporting them to law enforcement.

Each of the five adults has been suspended from the school, and each could face at least five years in prison if convicted.

'Explicit text messages'
The teachers ? all men in their late 20s or early 30s ? are accused of striking up relationships with female students during the 2011-2012 school year. The female students were 17 or 18 at the time and graduated in June, NBCPhiladelphia.com reported.

"It's obvious there existed a culture at Triton High School whereby teachers thought they could get away with improper relationships with their students and administrators turned a blind eye," said Camden County Prosecutor Warren Faulk at a Thursday afternoon press conference.

"The improper relationships between the teachers and students were fostered through social media as well as socializing in person outside the school. Indeed we uncovered evidence of sexually explicit text messages during instructional periods," Faulk said.

Prosecutors say the three teachers were friends, and the relationships they had with the students lasted from November 2011 until June 2012.?The teachers are also accused of taking a trip to Ocean City, N.J. with the victims over a school break.

School policy prohibits teachers from socializing outside of school and communicating by phone or text message.

The arrests were made after a two-month investigation by the Camden County Prosecutors Office.

'Hooking up' with students
According to court documents, math teacher Dan Michielli, 27, of Blackwood, had intercourse with a student multiple times during the school year. He is charged with official misconduct, sexual assault, endangering the welfare of a child and criminal sexual conduct.

Gym teacher and boys' soccer coach Nick Martinelli, 28, of Cherry Hill, is charged with official misconduct involving an 18-year-old. He allegedly touched and kissed the girl when she was a student and had intercourse with her after she graduated in June.

Math teacher and girls' track coach Jeff Logandro, 32, of Blackwood, is charged with official misconduct, criminal sexual contact and endangering the welfare of a child. A court filing says he inappropriately touched a female student.

Authorities say a student, not one of the alleged victims, told a substitute teacher in April that teachers were "hooking up" with students. Authorities say the substitute teacher then told DePaul.

Prosecutors say the principal met with the student, who told her she'd been to one of the teacher's homes with a girl who was involved with him and had seen the explicit text messages. Authorities say that DePaul asked her to write an account of what she had heard and that Assistant Principal Jernee Kollock stayed with the student to help her write the statement, even helping her with her grammar ? but also making it seem less serious.

More US coverage from NBC News

Around the same time, Faulk said, DePaul learned one of the teachers had driven an alleged victim and another student to Ocean City in violation of district policy. But, he said, the teacher was merely reprimanded.

Faulk said neither administrator contacted authorities. Both were charged with official misconduct.

Faulk said DePaul later said she wished she had been more concerned for the students than the teachers.

The defendants either could not be reached or did not return messages left Thursday afternoon by The Associated Press. All five are due in court Oct. 11.

The teachers were suspended by the Black Horse Regional School District last month; the administrators were suspended Thursday. Superintendent John Golden said in a statement that the district was cooperating with authorities, notifying families of students of what allegedly happened and offering counseling.

"In addition, we have initiated a comprehensive review of our existing policies, protocols and training and education materials to prevent this from happening again at this or any district school," the statement said.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Consumers Love Internet Auctions

There is no doubt that internet auctions are extremely popular throughout the world. Traditional auction website formats have certainly set the trend. What they enabled buyers to do is get great deals on both new and used items. On a similar note, they allowed sellers to create some income from their unwanted items. Overall, this is a market place that has grown dramatically over the last decade, to a point where a lot of people use these websites as references when it comes to pricing and ensuring that they really are getting the best deal that they possibly can.

Traditional internet auctions are great for all those people that are looking for items that are hard to find. There are literally millions of auctions, so the chances of finding what they need are very good. The problem with traditional internet auctions is that they are extremely flooded with buyers and sellers. This means that getting an actual good deal on regular, every day products, is not exactly an easy task. Of course, the good deals are there and people do save lots of money, but they generally have to spend a lot of time in order to save the smallest amounts of cash, which is not very practical for most people.

A new day is dawning and internet auctions are changing. Nowadays people have some different options when it comes to bidding online. One of the great options is the lowest unique bid wins, style auctions. In these auctions, bidders pay a small fee to place a bid. They bid at the price they think will be the lowest and unique at the same time. For instance, they might bid ?1.21 on a brand new car. If the other lowest bid is ?2.00, they could win a car, for ?1.21! Consumers stand a good chance of getting lots of great products at extremely low prices using this method.

Another great option when it comes to internet auction sites is the penny auction style format. These are fairly similar to the unique bid mentioned above. What happens in these auctions is that again, the bidder pays to place a bid. When they place a bid the price will increase by just a penny. This means that items worth hundreds could go for as little as pennies, meaning that the buyer saves a ridiculous amount of cash. In fact, in many instances, the savings that have been on offer have been in excess of 90%.

Essentially, traditional internet auctions are now not what they used to be. Consumers that really love getting great deals with internet auctions will have to adopt a new strategy. By entering into unique bid auctions or penny auctions, they will have a much better chance of winning products at extremely low prices, and these alternative auction sites often have extra features which allow you to recover your bid costs when you don't win for example. Of course, having a bidding strategy will help these people to achieve the lowest prices possible, rather than wasting lots of cash on bids, for products they possibly do not even want!

If you are looking for a different auction site format you might want to take a look at BidGrid. See how it works

The EMD Update: Like Panda & Penguin, Expect Further Refreshes ...

Last week, Google announced the EMD Update, a new filter that tries to ensure that low-quality sites don?t rise high in Google?s search results simply because they have search terms in their domain names. Similar to other filters like Panda, Google says EMD will be updated on a periodic basis. Those hit by it may escape the next EMD update, while others not hit this time could get caught up in the future.

How Periodic Updates Work: The Panda Example

Google has several filters that it updates periodically, that is from time-to-time. The Panda Update is the best example of this periodic nature and the impact it can have on publishers.

Panda works by effectively sifting all the sites that Google knows about on the web through a filter. Those deemed having too much poor quality content get trapped by Panda, which in turn means they may no longer rank as well as in the past. Those that slip through the filter have ?escaped? Panda and see no ranking decrease. In fact, they might gain as they move higher into spots vacated by those Panda has dropped.

Since the filter isn?t perfect, Google keeps trying to improve it. Roughly each month, it sifts all the pages its knows about through an updated Panda filter. This might catch pages that weren?t caught before. It might also free pages that may have been caught by mistake.

Importantly, sites themselves get a chance to escape Panda each time the filter is used based on their own attempts to improve. Those that have dropped much poor quality content might find themselves no longer being trapped. Each new release of Panda is chance for a fresh start.

There are two articles from the past that I highly recommend reading to understand this more. One?s even a picture, an infographic:

How The EMD Update Works

How does this apply to the EMD Update? First, EMD gets its name because it targets ?exact match domains,? which are domains that exactly match the search terms that they hope to be found for.

One common misconception is that EMD means that sites with search terms in their domain names no longer will rank as well as in the past. I?ve not seen evidence of this so far, and it?s certainly not what Google said.

Google specifically said EMD was designed to go after poor quality sites that also have exact match domain names. If you do a search for ?google,? you still find plenty of Google web sites that all have ?google? in the domain name. EMD didn?t wipe them out because those sites are deemed to have quality content.

Is that Google just favoring itself? I wouldn?t say so. After all, it didn?t wipe out:

  • Cars.com for ?cars?
  • Usedcars.com for ?used cars?
  • Cheaptickets.com for ?cheap tickets?
  • Movies.com for ?movies?
  • Skylightbooks.com for ?books?

Instead, EMD is more likely hitting domains like online-computer-training-schools.com, which is a made-up example but hopefully gets the point across. It?s a fairly generic name with lots of keywords in it but no real brand recognition.

Domains like this are often purchased by someone hoping that just having all the words they want to be found for (?online computer training schools?) will help them rank well. It?s true that there?s a small degree of boost to sites for having search terms in their domains with Google, in general. A very small degree.

But such sites also often lacked any really quality content. They were purchased or created in hopes of an easy win, and there?s often no real investment in building them up with decent information or into an actual destination, a site that people would go to directly, not a site they?d just happen upon through a search result.

Some of them lack content at all (are ?parked?) or have content that?s taken from other sites (?scraped?). Google already went after parked domains last December?(and made a mistake?in classifying some sites as parked in April). It?s already been going after scrapers with Panda and other efforts.

EMD seems targeted after low-quality sites that are ?in between? these two things, perhaps sites that have content that doesn?t appear scraped because it has been ?spun? using software to rewrite the material automatically.

It?s really important to understand that plenty of people have purchased exact match domains in hopes of a ranking boost and have also put in the time and effort to populate these sites with quality content. I?ve already listed some examples of this above, and there are smart ?domainers? beyond this who do not park, scrape or spin but instead build a domain with a nice name into a destination, making it more valuable for a future sale.

In short, EMD domains aren?t being targeted; EMD domains with bad content are.

The Many Filters Google Uses

A mystery in all this is that Panda was already designed to punish sites for having bad content. Clearly, Panda wasn?t doing the job in the case of EMD domains, to the degree that Google had to build a completely separate EMD filter.

That means, metaphorically speaking, Google pours all the sites it knows about through a Panda strainer. After that, it pours what didn?t get caught in that strainer through the EMD filter.

In reality, it?s not a case of pouring everything through a variety of different filters all at once. Google?s running different filters at different times, such as:

There are more we don?t even know about, and Google doesn?t announce most of these. But what we?ve learned more and more through Panda is the periodic nature of Google?s filters, the idea that once a filter is introduced, at some point in a few weeks or month, Google will improve that filter and sift content through it again.

To better understand how all these filters can keep the Google results ?dancing,? I highly recommend reading my article from last month:

Recovering From EMD

Google confirmed for me this week that EMD is a periodic filter. It isn?t constantly running and looking for bad EMD domains to filter. It?s designed to be used from time-to-time to ensure that what was filtered out before should continue to be filtered. It also works to catch new things that may have been missed before.

If you were hit by EMD, and hope to recover, the advice seems to be very similar to Panda ? get rid of the poor quality content. In particular, these articles below might help:

You can find more in the Panda Update section of our Search Engine Land Library. After you?ve removed the poor quality content, it?s waiting time. You?ll only see a change the next time the EMD filter is run.

When will that be? Google?s not saying, but based on the history of Panda, it?s likely to be within the next three months, and eventually it might move to a monthly basis. But it could take longer until EMD 2 hits, nor is there any guarantee it?ll ever ramp-up to a monthly refresh like Panda, nor that Google will even announce when they happen.

To complicate matters, many sites that may have thought they were hit by EMD instead might have been hit by the far bigger Panda Update 20. Google belatedly acknowledged releasing a fresh Panda update the day before EMD was launched.

My advice is that if you were never hit by Panda before ? and you have a domain name you purchased in hopes of an ?exact match? success ? then it?s probably EMD that hit you.

Postscript:?Related, a few hours after this was posted, a new Penguin Update was released. See our story,?Google Penguin Update 3 Released, Impacts 0.3% Of English-Language Queries.

(AP) ? A Picasso painting the famous artist created in denouncing war has come to the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Cuban missile crisis.

Caroline Kennedy unveiled the "Rape of the Sabine Women" on Thursday, on loan through Jan. 6 from the Museum of Fine Arts. She said it shows the fear and uncertainty of the time.

"The Cuban missile crisis was really the most dangerous time in my father's presidency, and there really was a risk that the United States and the Soviet Union might go to war," she said. "I think there's a lot that current leaders can learn from (it)."

She called the 1962 crisis over Soviet missiles in Cuba and subsequent ease of tensions her father's "greatest challenge."

The painting, a 6-foot-by-4-foot vertical oil on canvas, depicts in bold colors two armed men with spear and sword raised toward each other, standing over a woman and wailing child. Picasso started the work soon after the 13-day crisis, referencing a fabled abduction of Sabine women by ancient Romans.

Legend has it, Rome faced a shortage of marriageable women after it was founded or perhaps sought an alliance with a nearby warlike tribe, the Sabines. Roman leaders invited the Sabines to a feast, only to capture dozens to hundreds of Sabine virgins. The Sabines later tried to rescue the women, who reminded them the Romans were now the men's relatives by marriage and brokered a truce.

'World of Warcraft'-playing candidate: 'I'm a real person'

14 hrs.

Colleen Lachowicz is a long-time health care?worker who works with teens and young adults. She is a wife and a step-mom. And she likes to knit.?

But this week, the 48-year-old?Lachowicz ? who is running as a Democrat for the State Senate in Maine ??abruptly found herself at the center of a Republican smear campaign because of one of her hobbies. No ... not knitting.?

Lachowicz is a gamer. More specifically, the Republican party of Maine discovered that Lachowicz enjoys playing the online role-playing?game "World of Warcraft." And, on Thursday, the party launched a campaign to?out what they are calling her "disturbing alter-ego" and her?"bizarre double life."

The Republican Party not only launched a website, they?sent out post cards?to voters in her district and even issued a press release ??all of which?showed off the?level-85 orc named Santiaga that?Lachowicz?plays in the game and also?highlighted?online?comments she had made about the game (some of which?contain curse words!). (For more on that, read our previous story here.)

News of the "WoW" witch hunt has since made international headlines and kicked up a storm of outrage?in the gaming world. I had a chance to interview Lachowicz after she had spent a day out knocking on doors, campaigning in her district not to mention fielding a flurry of ?calls and emails about the anti-gaming crusade. And she seemed nothing short of?stunned by the turn of events.

"This whole thing is just so weird," she said sounding flustered. "It's just so?weird that it's an issue."

Lachowicz?said that she has played games her entire life and?has never tried to hide the fact that she's a gamer.?She says she?got started gaming way back in the good old days with an Atari home console and loved going to arcades.

"Do you remember 'Marble Madness'? I loved that game," she says.?More recently she has enjoyed playing the hit "Elder Scrolls V:?Skyrim" on her PlayStation 3. And she points?out that even her elderly mother (nearly 70 years old) enjoys playing games.

"She doesn?t play any massively multiplayer online games but she can kick some butt in 'Super Mario Bros.'," Lachowicz says.

Lachowicz?got started playing "World of Warcraft" four years ago when the "Wrath of the?Lich King" expansion arrived.?"I?liked hanging out with friends and working on a goal together," she says of what drew her to the game.

She thinks those who don't play the game don't realize that the stereotypes about its players aren't true. (Think: basement-dwelling teenagers without a life.)

"When I played,?I played with people who are college professors and?lawyers. I played with adults," she says. "The average age, I think, is mid-30s for people who play online MMOs."

The 'G' word
Indeed, with hundreds of millions of people around the world playing?not only online?games like "World of Warcraft" but Facebook games and mobile games, it's stunning to see that the term "gamer," in some circles, remains a dirty word.

"By 2012, it's far easier to identify those Americans who are?not?game-playing consumers than those who are," says Hal Halpin,?president of the Entertainment Consumers Association. (The ECA?is a non-profit organization dedicated to gamer?advocacy.)?

"Who among us has never seen nor heard of 'Angry Birds,' 'Plants vs Zombies' or 'FarmVille' much less classics like 'Pac Man,' 'Asteroids' or 'Space Invaders'? This is akin to demonizing politicians who admitted to listening to, and being fans of rock-and-roll 50 years ago."

Additionally, while the Republican party claims that that Lachowicz spends "hundreds of hours playing in her online world," Lachowicz says "WoW" was never a central part of her life. And that is a?common misperception ? that if you enjoy playing video or computer games, you must have an addiction to it.

Though?Lachowicz?concedes?that some people do have a problem with playing "WoW" too much, she says?that has never been the case for her.?In fact, she hasn't logged into the game for about?a month. And before that, she hadn't had a chance to play since January.

Why? "I've?been busy running for office," she says. And that's not the only hobby that has suffered because of her political?ambition. "I also don?t do much knitting anymore either."

As for the comments Lachowicz has made about playing "World of Warcraft"?? comments in which she has, for example, professed her love of stabbing things and, yes,?used derogatory terms for Tea Party members ? "Many of those comments?go back to 2005 or?2004 and they are taken out of context," Lachowicz says, pointing out that anyone who has ever played a game like "WoW" knows that enjoying fighting?is all part of the game.

But she adds, "I would say I?m sorry if some people are offended. I?certainly I said those comments before?I knew I was going to run for office."

Welcome to the modern digital age ? the age when anything you type online can and will be used against you.

"I work primarily with young people ??teenagers and young adults ??and I think, 'What?kind of message is this for us to send to them?" she says. "That every little tweet you?might have done or Facebook posting or comment on an article, that this is going to?come back to haunt you? Are we really going to go back years and years to?try and drag people through the mud?rather than talk about the issues?"

The people respond
As stunning as the entire experience has been for Lachowicz, it could, in fact, work in?her favor. Gamers around the world have been coming to her?defense?in?online forums and on her candidacy Facebook page, cheering her on and pledging her support?with comments like this:

"Good to see you standing up for your beliefs and hobbies, the country needs more people like you to lead it, we need people who are willing to share their hobbies and show they are normal people just like everyone else. Thumbs up to you."

"As a one time WOW player, retired NYC Police Det. and a person way older than you :) I applaud you," writes?William Crespo on her Facebook page. "It only shows your ability to interact with many, many people. I have met many people my age and older who still play WOW. My brother still plays and at one time it was my brother, my nephew, my grandson and myself all playing together... It's a great hobby."

Even Republican gamers are coming to her defense. For instance, a woman named?Kari Zielke sent the above?photo to Lachowicz's campaign and to the Republican Party of Maine.?"We may have different political views but I wont stand by while my fellow Horde are treated this way," she wrote on Lachowicz's Facebook page.

Meanwhile many of Lachowicz's new?supporters?have pointed out that knowing she was gamer would make them more likely?... not less ...?to vote for her.?

"That website won you every single vote from people under 30 and every single gamer vote for those over 30," writes?Greg Hussein Kinney on Lachowicz's?Facebook page.

I asked?Lachowicz what she thought of the idea that people might just vote for her because?she's a gamer.?

"What I would say is that I knock on doors a lot and I talk to potential voters and I try to make a connection with them and be a real person," she said. "And maybe this is just the kind of thing that says I'm a real person. I do things just like everyone else does ? like millions of other people."

Indeed,?Halpin believes?the days in which the term "gamer" means something negative are very much numbered.

"There still is a stigma, but the negative connotations are far less than they were even five years ago," he says. "With the assimilation of social and casual gamers and the proliferation of gaming types and styles, I think the clock is ticking."?

For now, Lachowicz says she is staying busy going door-to-door and preparing for the coming election. She's been so busy, she hasn't even had a chance to try the new "World of Warcraft" expansion, "Mists of Pandaria."

In fact, when I ask her what she thinks about this panda-themed expansion ? which has been somewhat controversial in the "WoW" world ??she responds with the answer of a true politician:?"I have no comment on the pandas at this time."

Did High Altitude Affect President Obama?s Debate Performance?

Barack Obama. President Obama during his debate with Mitt Romney in Denver on Wednesday

Al Gore joked on Wednesday night that the high altitude of Denver affected President Obama?s debate performance. How high does a person have to go before his cognition is affected?

At least 6,000 feet. There is no evidence that Denver?s mile-high altitude has any effect on mental performance. The president may have been able to blame his lackluster display on thin air if the debate had been held in Kabul, Afghanistan (elevation 5,902 feet), because some studies have suggested that the first signs of short-term memory problems associated with acute hypoxia begin to appear at about 6,000 feet. That estimate, however, is controversial, and many researchers think you have to go much higher before mental performance is affected.

Altitude would be a more plausible excuse for President Obama had the debate been held in Bogota, Colombia (elevation 8,727 feet). At elevations of about 8,000 feet, research subjects have shown a diminished capacity to perform complex mental tasks, perhaps including calculating corporate tax rates.

Some of the criticism of the president?s performance focused on his apparent lack of fighting spirit, general sluggishness, and occasional irritability with moderator Jim Lehrer. Those can all be symptoms of acute hypoxia. Mountaineers often experience wild mood swings, from severe lethargy to euphoria, and sometimes exhibit impatience and increased sensitivity to criticism. A researcher studying European expats living in Ladakh, Kashmir, in the 1920s observed: ?It is astonishing how the most decisive of men will slowly and insidiously lose the power of decision and become unwilling to bear responsibility.?

Since hypoxia-related lassitude and emotional instability don?t seem to appear until a person surpasses 11,000 feet, President Obama could only have blamed the entirety of his shortcomings on altitude if the debate had been held in a city such as La Paz, Bolivia (elevation 11,942) or Lhasa, Tibet (elevation 12,002 feet).

We'll have to wait for the full report to see numbers broken down by department, but it's safe to say that there's a lot of Galaxy S IIIs (it ticked past 20 million last month) adding up to reach that pinnacle. Reuters and Bloomberg have predictions from various analysts on how many handsets, RAM chips and flat-panel HDTVs were sold, but if its legal battle with Apple ends in the worst-case scenario, at least we figure Samsung will have enough left over to keep the lights on.
