Gridditor for iPhone and iPad review

Gridditor is an iPhone and iPad app that lets layer multiple filters to your photos and displays them in a unique way. Gridditor will show you four filters at a time, one in each direction (up, down, left, right), and the farther you move in any direction on the grid, the stronger the effect gets. The gird preview allows you to see the effect of applying multiple filters at once and the randomization of the filters shows you creative possibilities you may not have considered otherwise.

Gridditor includes 19 different filters and effects that you can choose from. The default filters are contrasty, bright, vibrant, and dark, but you can change the initial set to be any four filters that you want. You can also individually choose each filter each time. To get a closer look at what one of the versions of your photo looks like, just tap it to make it bigger. If you like how it looks and want to apply the effect, tap the checkmark. Gridditor will the consider this new version the original and randomly choose 4 more effects.

When you're done applying filters to your photo with Gridditor, You can share it to Facebook, Twitter, Mail, assign it to a contact, save to your Camera Roll, or open in another photo editing app.

Gridditor's interface is particularly amazing on the iPad. On the iPhone, you can only see six square of the grid at at time, but on the iPad's big display, you can 12 of the 49 different versions of your photo at once.

The good

  • 19 filters
  • Unique grid interface that lets you see different combinations of effects at once
  • Specifically choose which filters you want to consider, or let Gridditor randomly choose four of them for you
  • Repeat the process over and over
  • Share to Facebook and Twitter
  • Open In another photography app for further editing
  • Universal for iPhone and iPad

The bad

  • Some users are reporting repeated crashes (I have not experienced this on my iPhone 5 or 3rd generation iPad)

The conclusion

The screenshots for Gridditor really don't do it justice, so please be sure to watch the video above to see Gridditor in action. The grid interface, as opposed to just sliders, lets you compare different version of your photo side-by-side which ultimate speeds up the editing process, and with the randomization of filters combined with the interface, Gridditor will likely expose you to ideas that you would've never though of -- stretching your creativity.

Combatting military suicides:
limit access to private weapons

New York Times *, by?James Dao

With nearly half of all suicides in the military having been committed with privately owned firearms, the Pentagon and Congress are moving to establish policies intended to separate at-risk service members from their personal weapons. The issue is a thorny one for the Pentagon, with gun-rights advocates and many service members fiercely opposing any policies that could be construed as limiting the private ownership of firearms. (Snip) ?This is not about authoritarian regulation,? Dr. Jonathan Woodson, the assistant secretary of defense for health affairs, said in an interview. ?It is about the spouse understanding warning signs and, if there are

Comments:
[* at MSNBC, no reg required] Like a determined suicide can't kill himself by one hundred other means? This IS about attacking the 2nd Amendment on another front. Are they talking about detecting and removing all drugs on which someone can overdose from homes of military homes? Of course not. And that this nonsense, instead of improved counseling suggestions, comes out of the Defense Dept. tells you how many turncoats we now have within our own government. Finding out what firearms someone owns is NOT explicitly a way of preventing suicide.

Patently absurd. That's the NYT.

Men are said to prefer firearms because they are assured of the result. Quick and over.

The likelihood that a spouse can prevent a suicide is slim to none. The depression that drives one to suicide is deep. Shell shock (now called PTSD) is a living nightmare to the afflicted.

Start getting the VA to provide help that Vets are entitled to.
Our returning heroes are getting the shaft from the VA.
Why do you think we have the "Wounded Warriors" organization? We pay taxes for services that are our first obligation but that money is going to the VA to sit on their lazy asses or partee.
Complete overhaul necessary.

Aggressively promoting gun safety and passing out trigger locks have nothing to do with suicides. It's not the gun safety that's at issue; it's the mental health of 'at risk' troops.

Obama has stressed, dissed, slashed and demoralized the military and the NYT comes up with this.
Obama hides his failures behind the SEALs and the rest of the military. Talk about a user.
Obama's lies about Benghazi continue after weeks of relentless stonewalling and coverup.

If I were in the military I would be asking why I was putting my life in danger under the leadership of 'lead from behind' Obama.

What are the reasons for all of these suicides? I know morale is low, deployments are way too long, etc., but I have many family members who served in the past, and I don't remember suicides among servicemen. My uncle had severe shell shock from the Battle of the Bulge, for example, but he was never suicidal. What is going on?

Wow. If that's not the dumbest thing ever.

When I was in high school there was a rash of suicides. At least one a year. Two guys killed themselves in cars in garages (ban garages!), two hung themselves (ban rope or anything that can be used as a rope!), one used a plastic bag to kill himself (well, I guess this is where the plastic bag ban comes in) and only one used a gun to kill himself.

How about we limit stupid rules of engagement so our guys know that their government isn't trying to kill them in the first place? How about not forcing them to look the other way while Muslims torture men, women, children and dogs?

Re the article linked in #17,

When Obama took office, there were approximately 390,000 outstanding claims, of which only 22 percent had been pending for more than 180 days.

That number had been falling during the second George W. Bush administration, despite the military being heavily engaged in two wars. At the beginning of Bush?s second term, the VA had about 480,000 outstanding claims, with only 21 percent backlogged for more than 180 days.

That number fell by almost 100,000 claims by the time Obama took office.

The claims are for dependents as well as for the service members themselves.

As a first step......

The Reserves should only be called up in the event of a national emergency.

If we need to boost our forces, take reserve VOLUNTEERS first.

Our reserve forces face financial ruin when they get called to active duty. Their income gets slashed, but the bills remain.

Increase active duty pay and benefits substantially! Active duty personnel should NEVER have to go on food stamps and should never have to worry about their families at home.

Bring religion back to the troops.

None of the above will fix the problem, but may help to alleviate some of the reasons. Taking away weapons certainly wont "FIX" anything.

I have a theory and it's only that. When children are reared with no purpose to their lives apparent to them it's little wonder. When I was young we played outside all day everyday unless in school or inclement weather (Barbados, California heh!) When a little older we had chores that had to be done the... way my parents wanted them done. When I did wrong I was punished. I had two parents who worked hard, loved each other and us and were committed to the bitter end. No psychology there. Commitment, love, mercy and understanding. I had every complaint other kids had but so what!?!. That was life! I'm married to the same man 47 years. Neither of us got what we deserved (We both could have been better and/or worse!) One has MS the other recovered from brain tumor surgery. God loves us, We love God. He carries our burdens and we let Him. Gets you through a lot of things. Suicide prevention should start early. So should understanding the purpose of ones life.

Take away the guns, but don't forget the knives and other sharp objects. That should lower suicide rates. Maybe have them wear handcuffs so they can't reach for anything that can be weaponized. How about putting all returning service men in padded rooms because they are a potential danger.

President Obama may well celebrate a second term in Chicago next month, but the conventional wisdom underestimates the difficulty he faces, as his campaign has distinct problems with all three elements. His defense of his record is exceptionally weak, his effort to define Mitt Romney is nearly exhausted, and his vision for the next four years ? perhaps the most important ? has been largely missing from

Apple Butter Stir-Off opens in Belpre

BELPRE - The start of the 34th annual Apple Butter Stir-Off took place Saturday in Howes Grove Park in Belpre.

Saturday's events included the Belpre High School Band and Little Miss Apple of Your Eye Contest.

The stir-off is always held on the first weekend of October, and this year people welcomed a nice change, a cool and sunny day.

The admission-free Belpre Apple Butter Stir-off includes rides for children, crafts and fun.

Willene Bacon, event co-chair for the Belpre Lions Club, said the event was off to a better start compared to last year, when it suffered a weekend of rain. She said it was a more of a chilly day than most people expected on Saturday, but the event was still bringing a large crowd thanks to some sunshine.

"It's been slow," she said. "Cooler, but still better than last year."

Bacon said the Stir-Off was being run a little differently this year. Guests were not charged admission, but there was a chance to win money, gas and grocery cards by purchasing raffle tickets.

"We have kids' games, a carnival, and instead of charging at the gate we have a raffle," said Bacon.

First place prize of the raffle was a cash prize of $300, while second place was a $200 gas card and third place was a $100 grocery card.

Susan Dennis, a volunteer from Pioneer Presbyterian Church of Belpre, said the church and Boy Scouts Troop 91 help make and donate the apple butter each year and split the proceeds. The Scouts use their earnings for individual boys' accounts to be used for summer camp and other projects. The church uses the proceeds for general projects.

In the past, their combined efforts have made about 220 gallons of apple butter each year.

Dennis said there are two kettles for church volunteers and guests to stir during the day. She said the Scouts pick, prepare and cook the apple sauce. The mixture being stirred at the festival includes that apple sauce, along with sugar, cinnamon candy and oil.

"It's been an ongoing project for both of us (the church and Boy Scouts)," said Dennis. "Older people share their stories while the kids try."

Jars are provided by the two groups, and volunteers form an assembly line to fill them with the delicious finished product. One volunteer uses a pan or scoop to pour the apple butter into each jar, another wipes the jar clean with a towel and lastly a lid is put on the jar to seal it up and sell it to the next customer. If the apple butter doesn't sell out at the event, the groups can sell it all year.

Dennis said organizers like to remind people of the old fashioned history of apple butter. Through the combined efforts of the church and Boy Scouts, they have provided the apple butter for over 17 years.

Bacon said along with the crafts and prizes, entertainment is provided each day at the Stir-Off, which concludes today. The schedule of activities includes:

* 11:55 a.m.: President's Welcome

* Noon: Buckeye Travelers

* 1:30 p.m.: Taylor Sams

* 3 p.m.: Plan B

* 5 p.m.: Closing

Ryan rallies GOP faithful in Wisconsin

MILWAUKEE - Vice presidential hopeful Paul Ryan is rallying the Republican faithful at a fundraiser in his home state of Wisconsin.

Ryan appeared at a fundraiser in Milwaukee on Saturday evening. He told donors in a 15-minute speech that President Barack Obama is driving the country deeper into debt.

The price of admission ranged from $250 for donors under age 35 to $100,000 for couples who wished to be designated "Founding Partners." Jon Hammes, finance chairman for the Mitt Romney campaign in Wisconsin, told the crowd the event had netted $2.8 million.

The fundraiser comes two days after President Barack Obama made an appearance on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus. A Marquette University Law School poll released earlier this week showed Obama with an 11-point lead over Mitt Romney in Wisconsin.

Venezuela's Chavez re-elected to extend socialist rule

CARACAS (Reuters) - Venezuela's socialist President Hugo Chavez comfortably won re-election on Sunday, quashing the opposition's best chance at unseating him in 14 years and cementing himself as a dominant figure in modern Latin American history.

A fist-pumping Chavez led throngs of supporters in celebration from the balcony of the presidential palace - just months after cancer treatment had taken him out of the public eye and left him fending off rumors he was dying.

A new six-year term will extend his rule of the OPEC member state to two decades, giving him a chance to deepen his oil-revenue-fueled socialism while continuing to support left-wing allies in Latin America, though a possible recurrence of cancer still hangs over him.

"Today we've shown that Venezuela's democracy is one of the best democracies in the world, and we will continue to show it," the 58-year-old Chavez shouted, dressed in a signature red shirt and waving a replica sword of independence hero Simon Bolivar.

Crowds roared, and the smoke of fireworks clouded the air.

Chavez took 54.42 percent of the vote, with 90 percent of the ballots counted, compared with 44.97 percent for young opposition candidate Henrique Capriles.

Since taking power in 1999, the flamboyant former soldier has become a global flag bearer of "anti-imperialism," gleefully baiting the U.S. government while befriending leaders from Iran to Belarus whom the West views with suspicion.

At home, casting himself as an heir to independence hero Simon Bolivar, Chavez has poured billions of dollars in oil revenues into anti-poverty programs, and skillfully used his humble roots and folksy oratory to build a close connection with the masses.

"Chavez is my joy. He will continue protecting the poor and defenseless," said Gladys Montijo, 54, a teacher.

Highlighting relief among Latin American allies, Argentine President Cristina Fernandez wrote via Twitter: "Your victory is our victory! And the victory of South America and the Caribbean!"

Opposition leaders appeared crushed by the loss, with some Capriles supporters bursting into tears at his campaign headquarters as the news sank in.

The youthful state governor put on a brave face, celebrating his "house-by-house" campaign as the start of a long road to changing the direction of the country.

"I hope a political movement that has been in power for 14 years understands that almost half the country does not agree with it," a subdued and tired-looking Capriles told crestfallen supporters.

Chavez's victory was considerably slimmer than his win of 25 percentage points in 2006, reflecting anger at his failure to fix basic problems such as crime, blackouts and corruption.

Record turnout of 80 percent on Sunday will boost Chavez's democratic credentials, though critics said his use of state resources made a mockery of fairness during the campaign.

WHAT NEXT?

After heavy campaign spending, South America's biggest oil exporter faces growing pressure to devalue its currency in 2013, likely spurring inflation that has been a top complaint of Chavez sympathizers.

In the past, Chavez has taken advantage of election wins to press forward with radical reforms. His often-capricious nationalizations may now turn to some untouched corners of Venezuela's banking, food and health industries.

Cancer, though, could change that.

The constitution says if an incumbent steps down in the first four years of a six-year term, a new vote would be called. Under such a scenario, Capriles or another opposition candidate would have another crack at power.

During a year's treatment starting in mid-2011, Chavez endured three operations for two cancerous tumors, and chemotherapy that left him bald, exhausted and fearing death at his lowest point.

He wrongly declared himself cured once, and repeated that in July after a recurrence, prompting skepticism from doctors who say that at least two years must pass before a cancer patient can be given a clean bill of health.

Chavez has looked bloated and at times exhausted in recent months, but he ran a surprisingly energetic end to his campaign, even managing to dance, sing and strum a guitar at rallies.

Any sign of a downturn in his health in the future would stoke a succession debate in the ruling Socialist Party.

Congress head Diosdado Cabello, Foreign Minister Nicolas Maduro and Vice President Elias Jaua all look well-placed for a potential push for leadership.

But none of Chavez's allies come anywhere near his popularity, so if there were to be another election, Capriles could be a favorite after a widely praised campaign that has made him well-known across the nation of 29 million people.

Though the 40-year-old Capriles is the once-rudderless opposition's best leader of the Chavez era, his position is not guaranteed. There are other young political figures - including Zulia state governor Pablo Perez and telegenic former Caracas district mayor Leopoldo Lopez - waiting in the wings.

STATE ELECTIONS AHEAD

Now, Capriles and other leaders of the Democratic Unity coalition must dust themselves off and prepare for state governorship elections in December, when they will hope at least to increase the opposition's influence at the local level.

Chavez's new six-year term begins on January 10.

His latest election win continues a remarkable story that began with his birth on July 28, 1954 in a mud hut belonging to his grandmother in the rural village of Sabaneta.

He joined the army and spent years plotting before a failed coup in 1992 against President Carlos Andres Perez.

On his way into jail, wearing a red military beret that was to become his trademark, Chavez gave a two-minute televised speech admitting that his revolution had failed "for now." The speech electrified the nation and launched his political career.

Pardoned in 1994, Chavez began crisscrossing the country sharing his vision and eventually shocking the political elite by sweeping to victory at the ballot box in 1998.

With private media and business leaders opposed to his rule, Chavez was briefly toppled by army dissidents and street protests in 2002 - but returned two days later thanks to military loyalists and popular counter-demonstrations.

He also survived an economically crippling oil strike.

Chavez's win will probably mean more foreign investment from politically allied countries such as China, Russia, Iran and Belarus, while Western investors are more cautious. Relations with Washington are also likely to remain on edge, though Venezuelan oil has continued to flow to the United States over the years despite the diplomatic tension.

Wall Street had been hoping for a Capriles win, so prices of Venezuelan bonds - among the most actively-traded emerging market debt - are likely to dip on Chavez's triumph.

Pharmacy linked to outbreak issues wide recall

ATLANTA (AP) ? The pharmacy that distributed a steroid linked to an outbreak of fungal meningitis has issued a voluntary recall of all of its products, calling the move a precautionary measure.

The New England Compounding Center announced the recall Saturday. The company said in a news release that the move was taken out of an abundance of caution because of the risk of contamination. It says there is no indication that any other products have been contaminated.

The Food and Drug Administration had previously told health professionals not to use any products distributed by the center.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention posted updated figures to its website Sunday showing there are 91 confirmed cases of the rare form of fungal meningitis. The outbreak spans nine states and has killed at least seven people.

The states with reported cases are: Florida, Indiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, North Carolina, Ohio, Tennessee and Virginia.

The steroid linked to the outbreak had already been recalled, and health officials have been scrambling to notify anyone who may have received an injection of it. The Massachusetts pharmacy that made it has said it is cooperating with investigators.

It is not yet known exactly how many people may have been affected, though it could affect hundreds or even thousands of people who received the steroid injections for back pain from July to September.

Meningitis is caused by the inflammation of protective membranes covering the brain and spinal cord. Fungal meningitis is not contagious as are its more common viral and bacterial counterparts.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) ? A week after her annual steroid shot for back pain, Janet Russell began getting unbearable headaches. A fever followed. Doctors admitted her to the hospital, but couldn't say what was wrong.

"She is screaming and nothing is helping. They have already given her medication, but nothing is helping," said Russell's daughter, Tracy Barreiro. "It continually escalated."

Unexplained pain and confusion about its cause are troubling patients like the 71-year-old Russell, diagnosed with a deadly fungal meningitis likely contracted from a custom-made steroid shot, and medical professionals who have little experience treating the rare disease.

Russell's husband, Robert, said his wife's doctor told him early on, "'You can call it meningitis, you can call it anything you want to, but quite frankly, nobody, not anybody in this country, knows what it is at this point because we have never seen it.'"

"They didn't really tell us it was a fungal meningitis until the CDC told them," he said.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said as of Friday, five people have died in the outbreak, and have reported 47 cases in seven states. Investigators have focused on a steroid custom-made by a specialty Massachusetts pharmacy, as the source.

At least 29 cases are in Tennessee, and three people there have died, including the founder of an inner-city Christian center for at-risk children in Nashville.

State health officials trying to contain the outbreak are contacting about 1,000 patients who received epidural steroid injections at three clinics between July 1 and Sept. 28.

Russell was one of them, her family said, receiving her last back pain shot Aug. 30 from the Saint Thomas Outpatient Neurology Center, which got 2,000 vials of the injectable steroid from the New England Compounding Center in Framingham, Mass.

The suburban Nashville woman is hospitalized in intensive care, can only say a few words and has trouble keeping down even water. She suffered a brain hemorrhage last week, family said.

She first started to have headaches and neck pain a week after the last injection, family said. No one thought it was related to the injections. "Never in your wildest dreams do you think it's related to that," Barreiro said.

She went to the hospital emergency room on Sept. 7, but was sent home with pain medication and a diagnosis of flu-like symptoms. Three days later, she returned to the hospital; the pain got worse.

"Her headache progressed to the point of unbearable," said Teresa Russell, another daughter. "We were all frantic at that point, to get her some kind of relief. ... Every day we were asking doctor after doctor, 'What is this and what are we going to do?'"

Doctors first suspected bacterial meningitis, requiring her family to wear protective clothing when they visited her, Robert Russell said.

"It's something that we have never had to deal with and it's something that a lot of people don't know anything about, including myself," Russell said.

Saint Thomas Hospital, where Russell's family said she is being treated, declined to release information about individual patients, citing medical privacy laws. The neurology center voluntarily closed last month because of the investigation and isn't commenting.

A third fungal meningitis patient died in Tennessee on Wednesday at the same hospital, according to the facility's chief of medicine, Dr. Robert Latham. The patient was identified as Diana Reed by a family lawyer. The attorney, Bill Lassiter, wouldn't discuss when the 56-year-old woman became ill or when she received steroid injections.

Reed had helped to found the Wayne Reed Christian Child Care Center in Nashville, which works with children who are educationally and developmentally at risk, said Reed's pastor, Josh Graves. He wouldn't comment on her illness.

"She had a robust faith. She was passionate about serving those who were poor in Nashville," said Graves. "She was tough, relentless and every day pursued those things she felt God was calling her to do."

Considerations For A Mobile Web Design Strategy
The use of the internet has increased and more and more people are accessing the internet. However, it is not
always that people use computers to access the internet. They might be travelling or not be near a computer
and need to use the internet. This is when mobile devices come in handy. Many businesses have websites and
as they design them, they must ensure that their websites are accessible on mobile devices if they want more
clients. Websites differ from one client to another but strategies need to be set on how the site will function
on both the computer and the mobile devices. We shall highlight some of the key considerations that one
needs to make when planning to design a mobile web.
Purpose For The Mobile Web
The purpose for designing the website varies. It could be an existing website that is being developed in order
to be accessible from a mobile device; it could also be a completely new website being designed to
accommodate both computer and mobile devices or an improvement of an existing mobile site to include
more features. Each of these has different requirements and a good web Massachusetts web design expert
will be able to address each of them accordingly.
Business Objectives
A Massachusetts web design expert should take time to familiarize themselves with the objectives of the
business that they are designing the website for. Given the objectives, they will be able to know what to put
on the website, that is what information to include and what photos to put up.
Past Data
This mostly applies if a website previously existed. Find out from which browser it was accessible or how
much traffic did it attract. Obviously, this new design will work to improve the previous one while taking into
consideration the problems that it faced.
Responsive Design Of The Web
This means that instead of going through the trouble of building a new site each time a new mobile device
comes up, you can create your site such that the experiences on the computer and those on the desktop are
simultaneous. Using the latest technology, you can create your site such that it is accessible from any device.
Simplicity
The mobile design should ultimately be more simplified than the computer one. This can be achieved by
reducing the size of the files so that the pages load at a faster rate. Also ensure that the users have an easy
time accessing the pages on the site. This does not however mean that your site will become boring, you will
still be able to display all the fun things that you would like but toning each of them down.
Interaction
It is always good to include a provision for feedback in your website. This enables you to interact with your
visitors and be able to respond to their needs in a more efficient way. Also you can include the state of loading
for pages that may take longer to load.
With these considerations, your Massachusetts web design specialist will be able to come up with a good
design that will meet your needs and those of your client.
