Boeing to Build 702HP Communications Satellite for SES

  • Lighter satellite allows for maximum payload capacity
  • The 11th spacecraft ordered by European satellite operator will cover Asia

Boeing [NYSE: BA] has been selected by SES S.A. [Euronext Paris and Luxembourg Stock Exchange: SESG] to provide a new satellite that will expand direct-to-home broadcasting and other communications services to the fast-growing markets of Northeast Asia, South Asia and Indonesia, as well as maritime communications for vessels in the Indian Ocean. SES-9 -- ordered through SES' affiliate company SES Satellite Leasing Ltd. -- will be a Ku-band 702 High Power (HP) satellite.

Boeing has a 25-year relationship with Luxembourg-based SES. This is the 11th spacecraft that SES has ordered from Boeing and the contract includes an option for another. Financial details are not being disclosed.

SES-9 will be built in Boeing?s El Segundo Satellite Development Center and is designed to operate for 15 years in geosynchronous orbit with a 12.7-kilowatt payload and 57 high-power Ku-band transponders, equivalent to 81 36-MHz transponders.

"We look forward to working again with Boeing on an important addition to our global fleet," said Romain Bausch, president and CEO of SES. "SES-9 will greatly expand our transmission capacity over Asia, while adding increased flexibility and redundancy to a strategic orbital slot. SES is convinced that Boeing's 702HP will prove to be mission-critical in order to provide state-of-the-art, high-power satellite capacity to the thriving markets of Asia."

"We are pleased to be selected by SES to build a highly flexible 702HP satellite, which has a uniquely configured xenon ion propulsion system and chemical bi-propellant system, reducing the spacecraft's launch weight while allowing for maximum payload capacity," said Craig Cooning, CEO of Boeing Satellite Systems International and vice president and general manager of Boeing Space & Intelligence Systems. "Boeing has continuously evolved the 702 design since it was introduced over 15 years ago, allowing us to provide SES a satellite that will be consistent with their business requirements."

The spacecraft will be positioned at 108.2 degrees east longitude and provide incremental as well as replacement capacity to this well-established SES slot over Asia. SES-9 will be colocated with SES? existing SES-7 and NSS-11 satellites.

CHINA WINS AGAIN: Hewlett Packard Is No ... - Business Insider

?

(Updates with Lenovo CEO comment in ninth paragraph.)

Oct. 11 (Bloomberg) -- Hewlett-Packard Co.?s six-year reign as the world?s top personal-computer maker was ended by China?s Lenovo Group Ltd., highlighting the challenges facing Chief Executive Officer Meg Whitman as she strives to revive growth at the 73-year-old U.S. technology company.

Lenovo, which made a deeper push into the market by acquiring International Business Machines Corp.?s PC unit seven years ago, accounted for 15.7 percent of shipments last quarter, compared with 15.5 percent for Hewlett-Packard, market-research firm Gartner Inc. said yesterday. While another firm, IDC, had Hewlett-Packard at No. 1 by a slim margin last quarter, its research also showed Lenovo closing the gap.

Hewlett-Packard, which had held the lead since 2006, lost share amid management upheaval and strategy shifts that included the possible spinoff of the PC unit, a prospect later abandoned by Whitman. The company has been harder hit by a slump caused by economic malaise and a shift away from traditional computers toward mobile devices, such as Apple Inc.?s iPad. Gains in less- developed countries are also helping Lenovo.

?Lenovo has been a beneficiary because of some of the acquisitions it?s made and its relatively high exposure to emerging markets, which are outperforming developed markets,? said Brent Bracelin, an analyst at Pacific Crest Securities. ?It?s not just Lenovo, it?s part of a bigger trend across the consumer-device market.?

PC Slump

?

Global PC shipments fell 8.3 percent from a year earlier to 87.5 million last quarter, according to Gartner. IDC reported an 8.6 percent decline.

The figures contrast with data from the last decade, when the PC industry experienced double-digit growth most years as companies and households flocked to notebook computers. Those purchases have slumped with the advent of iPads and smartphones.

The PC industry is seeking a boost from the introduction this month of Windows 8, the new version of Microsoft Corp.?s flagship operating system.

Lenovo?s climb has been powered by hardware acquisitions and income growth in its home market, the largest for PCs and the world?s most-populous nation. Market-share gains have fueled profit growth exceeding 25 percent for 12 straight quarters. Chief Executive Officer Yang Yuanqing said in August that he won?t stop with a lead in PCs and wants to dominate in mobile devices as well.

?

Lenovo ?Milestone?

?

?Becoming the clear leader in global PC share of course remains one of Lenovo?s aspirations, but it also only represents one more milestone in our journey as a company,? Yang said in a statement e-mailed today. ?We are setting our sights on delivering long-term, profitable growth, while leading the way forward into the PC+ era.?

The stock rose 1.3 percent to HK$6.25 at 10:01 a.m. in Hong Kong trading. Beijing-based Lenovo has gained 21 percent this year, compared with a 13 percent advance for the benchmark Hang Seng Index.

Lenovo this week announced a group of four computers that convert from notebooks to tablets and will run Windows 8.

Achieving the top spot is a ?psychological milestone? that?s not likely to give Lenovo?s shares much of a lift because it has been widely anticipated, Dennis Lam, a Hong Kong-based analyst at DBS Vickers, said in an Oct. 9 e-mail.

Hewlett-Packard fell 1.3 percent to $14.18 yesterday in New York. Shares of the Palo Alto, California-based company have dropped 45 percent this year.

Hewlett-Packard?s PC sales slumped after the company said it would consider spinning off the division last summer, a decision Whitman reversed soon after taking the top job. She told analysts on the last earnings call that the company would ?defend our No. 1 position? in PCs.

?

Intel, Microsoft

?

The PC-growth slowdown is also hampering technology- industry bellwethers Intel Corp. and Microsoft Corp. Intel may report its first sequential third-quarter sales drop in more than two decades, while analysts have predicted that Microsoft this quarter will suffer its first sales decline in two years.

Dell Inc. followed Hewlett-Packard as the third-biggest PC maker, with its share falling to 10.5 percent from 11.2 percent a year earlier, Gartner said. Acer Inc.?s share slipped to 9.9 percent from 10.1 percent, while Asustek Computer Inc. climbed to 7.3 percent to 6 percent.

According to IDC, Hewlett-Packard?s share tumbled to 15.9 percent from 17.4 percent. Lenovo?s share climbed to 15.7 percent from 13.1 percent.

IDC?s study includes so-called workstations, the more powerful desktop devices used for such tasks as engineering, architecture and video-game development, said Michael Thacker, a spokesman for Hewlett-Packard.

?While there are a variety of PC share reports in the market, some don?t measure the market in its entirety,? he said. IDC?s analysis ?is more comprehensive.?

In the U.S., Hewlett-Packard, Dell and Apple were the three largest suppliers, according to Gartner.

U.S. PC shipments declined 13.8 percent in the quarter, Gartner said.

The Benefits of Electric Fragarance Lamps

For the longest time there was no electric fragrance lamp to buy for either home or office; there was only the old-fashioned style that had the stone and wick. Today, though, they are back and more popular than ever. When you walk into a home that has one it feels so inviting and so calming, not to mention beautifully scented with no hint of cigar smoke, pet odor or strong cooking smells.

There are so many styles you can choose from. It is possible to purchase electric fragrance lamps that display favorite team logos, or an exquisite luxury fragrance lamp that guests will think is a work of art.

The scents are the same way. They have hundreds of different aromas certain to suit your taste.

The origin of electric fragrance lamps lies shrouded in the past. In the 1800's a man by the name of Maurice Berger patented on a specialized wick. This revolutionary new wick was attached to a stone and then lighted.

The stone would heat up to an effective temperature at which point the flame would go out while the hot stone continued to do its work. Berger had his own company which he called Lampe Berger (lamp burr-shay').

It is still in operation today and his original effusion fragrance lamp is also still available today. A great idea is a great idea, and it has many advantages over its competitors.

They are safer to use than candles because there is no open flame. The only maintenance required is keeping it filled with scented oil. That was the beginning, and only look where technology has brought us today.

Though simple in design, an electric fragrance lamp can easily be personalized with all of the options it has today. Now, one simply plugs it in and instead of a wick and stone warming up, a light bulb provides the heat. The bulb melts the waxy scented oil and the aroma gently wafts into the air.

That's what they all have in common, but the options are now limitless. There are basic models that are simply ceramic with a myriad of shapes, colors, and sizes sure to enhance any decor.

They are available with team logos, brand names, company names, or other decorative details. On the other end of the spectrum, they have luxury ones that are made from glass or fine crystal--many of which allow light to scintillate across the room. They can have classic or modern appeal, but no matter what, they will get some attention.

Choosing a scent can a very demanding task because there are so many to choose from. They range anywhere from the smell of a rose all the way to the smell of fresh cut grass. During the holidays the scent of fresh baked gingerbread cookies or pecan pie can fill a home without baking a thing.

The most important advantage of using electric fragrance lamps involves safety, of course. There is no doubt that candles and incense are a fire hazard--responsible for countless fires each year.

Even the old style vessels have a minimal fire risk, but with today's electric versions the risk of fire is virtually gone. Those that are designed with cutouts that allow beams of light to be visible can used as a night lights as well. To put all doubt about their effectiveness to rest, a good selection of these wonderful products can be found at online cigar shops.

From words to deeds: Why election matters

When you vote for Democrat Barack Obama or Republican Mitt Romney in November, you'll be voting for more than a president. You'll be casting a ballot for and against a checklist of policies that touch your life and shape the country you live in.

It can be hard to see, through the fog of negative ads, sound bite zingers and assorted other campaign nasties, that the election is a contest of actual ideas. But it is always so. A candidate's words connect to deeds in office.

Roll back to 2008. Obama was the presidential candidate who promised to get the country on a path to health insurance for all. He delivered. If you haven't noticed one way or another, soon you will.

And back to 2000. George W. Bush ran on a platform of big tax cuts. That's precisely what the country got. A decade later, taxes are lower than they otherwise would have been.

That's not to say you can count on Romney's checklist or Obama's to come into full being. You sure can't.

By nature and necessity, the presidency is in large part a creature of compromise and improvisation. The unforeseen happens (the terrorist attacks), or circumstances change (the December 2007-June 2009 recession), or things that the candidate sets out to do run into a buzz saw in Congress (way too many examples to mention). That's why promises are broken, priorities shift and intentions get swept away by the fistful.

Even so, you get what you vote for, probably about as often as not. And a lot of what you get, you will feel in a personal way, for better or worse, no matter how distant Washington seems from your world.

The wars called away people in your orbit, if not in your family. The spending that each candidate wants to do ? Romney vows military expansion, Obama would put more into education, for starters ? is bound to benefit many livelihoods in some fashion, at the risk of even deeper national debt. And read their fine print: Medicare won't be the same in the years ahead. Perhaps not Social Security, either. (There's that national debt, after all.)

Across the spectrum of issues, Obama and Romney have drawn contrasts and telegraphed divergent ways for the nation to go.

You can't believe everything you hear. But you can believe enough to know that Tuesday, Nov. 6, is a true day of decision.

In this series, Associated Press writers who cover subjects at stake in the election look at the positions of the candidates, the underlying issues ? and why it matters.

EDITOR'S NOTE _ An introduction to The Associated Press' "Why It Matters" series, which explores top issues confronting the nation in this presidential campaign season and their impact on Americans.

(AP) ? The Italian doctor at the center of the Lance Armstrong doping scandal could be about to face criminal charges.

The prosecutor who has been investigating Dr. Michele Ferrari for several years tells The Associated Press that his inquiry is "coming to a close."

In a rare media interview, Padua prosecutor Benedetto Roberti also calls for an Interpol-like agency dedicated exclusively to international doping investigations like the one used for Armstrong.

Roberti says that the Armstrong inquiry was effective merely due to the "personal wills of individuals, who did this voluntarily. We need something that always works, and doesn't just depend on personal will."

While Roberti would not reveal details of his inquiry, he is believed to be investigating up to 70 people, including about 20 athletes.

Search Engine Optimization in 2013 ? Looking ahead | PlazaBridge ...

I recently returned from the SMX east conference in NYC, a world-renowned event that attracts the top search engine marketers from around the world. As a specialist in Interactive Strategies and Search Engine Optimization, I was abound with excitement to speak with like minded individuals and learn from the ?A-listers? of the digital marketing community. Upon my arrival I had the opportunity to speak with various Internet marketing gurus about the state of the industry and what the future holds. After a handful of conversations one common theme became very apparent. The world of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) has taken a dramatic shift, and we are all in for the ride.

The SMX conference in NYC attracted the most attendees it had ever seen, and there was good reason. Google has instituted a number of changes in its algorithm that have impacted the way search marketers approach their digital marketing strategy. Now is the time to reassess your current online marketing plan and optimize your site for long term success. Below I will list 3 takeaways from the conference that will help you with your everyday SEO efforts.

  1. SEO is no longer about manipulation of the search engines, but developing an online marketing strategy harnessing the power of evolving channels of customer interaction and inbound marketing tactics. Research your industry before taking part in any online marketing campaign, determine why your competition is ranked higher than you, and then do it better. Determine where your customers are and make yourself visible in those spaces. Google is now using ?social signals? in their algorithm to determine rankings of content, make sure you are taking advantage of this. Be Social!
  2. Google?s goal as a search engine is to make the user experience as optimal as possible. So how is this accomplished? The answer is unique, relevant, and great content. You have probably heard this time and time again, but content is still king and it always will be. Content is what ultimately determines user experience, and if you do not provide your online audience with great LINKABLE content, your site will have a very hard time achieving a top ranking. ?It is important to note that backlinks are still the fundamental basis for determining a websites ranking, although Google is hoping that it can eventually determine a sites ranking by social signals in the future. Start blogging if you haven?t already.
  3. At the conference I had the opportunity to listen to Google reps speaking about the future of Paid Search. They have made numerous updates to how an advertiser can better target their audience within the search engines. If you are just starting out with a SEO campaign, I highly recommend taking advantage of Pay-Per-Click advertising, especially mobile advertising if it is applicable to your industry.

It was stated that by 2014, mobile use will exceeds desktop usage. One of the biggest updates to Paid search is a feature called remarketing. Say for example you are the owner of an online shoe store and a potential customer browses your site and clicks on a blue heel, but doesn?t decide to purchase it that day. You can now target that potential customers with Ad?s relevant to blue heels as they browse in other parts of the Internet not related to your site. This has been shown to have a much higher conversion rate than typical PPC ads. To summarize, Educate yourself on what avenues of customers interaction are out there for your company, analyze the cost to benefit ratios, come up with a strategy, and execute.

PlazaBridge Group is here to help you navigate the complex, and often time confusing world of online marketing with a focus on increasing online visibility, lead generation and revenue growth. If you would like to speak further or have any questions please e-mail me at Anthony@plazabridgegroup.com for further discussion. Thanks!
