How to Meet Literary Agents and Pitch a Book ... - Book Writing Coach

Your Book Writing and Publishing Coach

I often recommend my clients attend the International Women?s Writing Guild?s Big Apple Conference, specifically for the ?Meet the Agents? portion of the program. It offers a terrific opportunity to hear a variety of literary agents share the types of books they are interested in and then pitch your book in 3 minutes or less.

A client recently sent some great questions and I thought they?d be valuable to anyone who wants to learn how to get published by a traditional publisher and get a book deal. Here, then, are her questions and my answers:

1. ?What should I bring with me? ?I was thinking of bringing a short pitch? and possibly printing out some cards with my contact info and the book info.

Bring business cards. You?ll want to give them to agents and also to other people you meet on line or in the audience. Don?t bring your proposal. An agent does not want to lug any of your stuff home with them. Send that to their office the next day by e-mail or mail (ask them which they prefer).

2. ?How can I prepare for this? ?I know that I can do research on each of the agents to see who is a match, but do you suggest I do other prep work?

Research is always helpful and may be necessary for some conferences, but at the IWWG conference the agents will each speak about the types of books they are looking for and their particular interest. The only prep work is to practice your 3 minute pitch.

3. ?What can I expect as far as layout? ?Do each of the agents give a talk in a classroom setting and then there is a meet and greet? ?Or, is it more like a trade show where everyone is at a booth/table and you just walk up and approach them? ?Or, do they approach you? ?Or, is it a total free-for-all?

At the IWWG in particular, agents will speak from the stage. In the past, attendees would then form lines behind the agents they most wanted to speak to.? Sometimes the agents remained on the stage and other years they were scattered throughout the venue at that point.

4. ?Are there a known list of do?s and don?ts when talking with agents? ?Specifically are there things that I definitely should avoid saying and/or things that I definitely need to emphasize? ?Do I hand people my pitch and then talk or vice versa? ?Do I only give people my pitch if they seem interested? ?Are there appropriate ways to follow up after (i.e. a quick e-mail note, etc.)?

You?ll speak your pitch, not give it to them.

*? Do line up behind your first choice agent at the IWWG. You may not have a chance to speak to more than one or 2, so prioritize.

*? Do make eye contact.

*? Do say your name and include the book title, hook and market, as well as mentioning the high points of your platform.

*? Do pause so they can ask you questions.

*? Do breathe!

*? Do smile.

*? Don?t talk too fast?slow down.

*? If they are not interested, feel free to ask if they have advice for how you can make your book more marketable. Their feedback can help you perfect your pitch and proposal and improve your chances.

5. ?Are there appropriate ways to follow up after (i.e. a quick e-mail note, etc.)?

Ideally, your book proposal will be ready to go when you return from the event. Send it with a short cover letter in whatever way the agent indicated (e-mail or US mail).

If your proposal won?t be ready to send right away, let the agent know that when you are pitching.

?

6. Anything else?

Enjoy yourself and let your passion for your subject and your book shine through.

It?s a great way to meet and pitch agents and you don?t have to be a woman to attend.

Feel free to ask your questions about meeting and pitching literary agents here as a comment to the post.? Good luck!

Stanford Law School Honors Judge Patricia Wald and ACLU Attorney David Sapp with Public Service Awards

STANFORD, Calif., Oct. 12, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ --?The John and Terry Levin Center for Public Service and Public Interest Law at Stanford Law School has announced two awards for remarkable achievements in public service. The recipient of the National Public Service Award is Judge Patricia M. Wald, who most recently served on the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia and who has been a role model for a generation of public interest lawyers. The recipient of the Miles L. Rubin Public Interest Award is David Sapp '05, staff attorney with the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Southern California, who has focused his work on education and juvenile justice. Both recipients were honored last night at a ceremony at Stanford.

The National Public Service Award is designated for an attorney whose public service work has had national impact and the Miles L. Rubin Public Interest Award recognizes an alumnus/a whose outstanding work has advanced justice and social change in the lives of vulnerable populations on a community, national, or international level. In particular, the Rubin Award is intended to highlight sustainable solutions to a societal problem.

National Public Service Award Recipient: the Honorable Patricia M. Wald

"Judge Wald's career is exceptional. She has made signal contributions to advance the public good in so many corners of our profession," said M. Elizabeth Magill, Richard E. Lang Professor of Law and Dean. "She is a role model for our students, and for all lawyers, for her lifetime commitment to justice on the national and international stage."?

The Honorable Patricia Wald has worked in such diverse fields as criminal justice, juvenile law, mental disability law, drug abuse, poverty and public interest law, administrative law, constitutional law, judicial process, and women and the law. After earning her law degree from Yale Law School in 1951, she served as a clerk for Judge Jerome Frank of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, the only woman to clerk on that Circuit that year. She later went to work at Arnold and Porter in Washington, D.C., and then took a ten-year leave from the profession to launch the lives of five children she had with her Navy JAG husband, Robert. She returned to practice and worked at the U.S. Department of Justice's Office of Criminal Justice, Washington D.C.'s Neighborhood Legal Services Program, the Center for Law and Social Policy, and the Mental Health Law Project, among others. She served in the Carter administration as Assistant Attorney General before being appointed as the first woman to be a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, where she served as chief judge from 1986 until 1991. After twenty years on the federal bench, Judge Wald accepted an appointment to serve as a judge for the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia. She later served as a member of the Iraq Intelligence Commission and has taken on countless leadership roles in professional associations, national commissions and legal reform efforts in the?United States and abroad.

Miles L. Rubin Public Interest Award Recipient: David Sapp, JD '05

The 2012 Miles L. Rubin Public Interest Award recipient David Sapp is being recognized for his legal advocacy for youth, primarily working on education and juvenile justice issues. During his tenure as staff attorney with the American Civil Liberties Union, he worked on Casey A. v. Gundry, a case that led to the complete overhaul of education and rehabilitation programming at Los Angeles County's largest juvenile detention center. He also served as counsel in Doe v. State of California, which challenged the State's failure to ensure that districts provide free public education as required by the California Constitution, and local districts' charging of illegal fees. This case led to the enactment of recent legislation establishing a statewide accountability system.?Prior to joining the ACLU, David clerked for the Honorable Raymond C. Fisher on the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit and was a Skadden Fellow at Advocates for Children's Services in Durham, North Carolina, where he represented students in school discipline and special education proceedings. He began his legal career clerking for the Honorable Myron H. Thompson on the District Court for the Middle District of Alabama. David Sapp earned his JD from Stanford Law School in 2005.

"David Sapp has been in the profession for fewer than 10 years, but he has already transformed the lives of hundreds of clients in need," said Magill. "He is an inspiration to our students and to us all."?

"I'm certain that our students will find this year's honorees particularly inspiring role models for how to pursue careers that fulfill all lawyers' responsibility to do justice," said Diane T. Chin, associate dean for public service and public interest law and lecturer in law who oversees the John and Terry Levin Center for Public Service and Public Interest Law. "Their work and commitments serve as a wonderful reminder about the ability of the law and legal structures to help and empower communities."

The awards were established in 2006 by the Levin Center for Public Service and Public Interest Law as part of its mission to raise awareness about the importance of public service. The awards are given annually to individuals who exemplify a commitment to public service, provide models of practice that are interesting and innovative, and who make a contribution to the overall public interest legal field. The recipients were chosen by a committee that included Todd Rubin, a member of the Rubin family who helped establish the Miles L. Rubin Public Interest Award, Larry Kramer, former Richard E. Lang Professor of Law and Dean, and Chin.

Clear-Cut real estate appraisals Methods - Sweetest Land in The ...

Author?s Name: Maryanne M Venere

The procedure for accurately making adjustments requires research, skill and experience. First, currently an estate return has to be filed for estates priced at greater than two million dollars. This way you do not be asking inadequate or a lot of for your household plus you?ve got an improved chance of selling it. They interact to cleanliness and order and also to good maintenance much the same way buyers do. These people also cover assessment based on the appreciative value from the property according to where it really is located. It is best people know how this works because caused by home appraisal is extremely good to you.

iframe width=420 height=315 src=http://www.youtube.com/embed/Pjcv9pyR2nc frameborder=0 allowfullscreen/iframe

Primarily, home inspectors are certified those who select you if you look at the house as a way to look at the actual status from the property. Find out about the comparable home sales in your town. Try to acquire at least two estimates from two different agents. Both the net and gross level of adjustments designed to reconcile the much like this issue property are indicative from the quality from the comparable sales. They look at the price of labor, building costs, and many other elements to find out price. The changes which were implemented also imply that homeowners can acquire 95% LTV (loan to loan valuation) on loans which might be under $417,000.

Now, what I would like you to accomplish is check for any video that I am destined to be delivering within the next day or two. Again, appraisers may exceed the 10% slightly with appropriate explanation. Due to this it will become forced to hire or call any on the available professional antique real estate appraisals companies for taking right selection. Many people overprice their house and thus can?t sell it off. For that reason as a possible appraiser, it really is possible to acquire order at a certain company plus believe that other appraisals is destined to be purchased by that company before it will come again into the throughout the rotation. All in all, what I am saying is speak to a professional loan officer in your town.

Don?t let your buyers inform you the amount of your home will be worth. There are basically three various ways to acquire appraisals for your household. There are several different kinds of home appraisals. When someone dies, one from the last concerns of friends and relations is taxes. The real objective of the performance management product is to ensure that their strategic plan and vision and values are communicated and achieved. A critical a part of selling a house will be the home appraisal.

So for you to pick-up and initiate again, it is advisable to cover a number of topics to ensure that you understand what you need. Home ? Gain offers you a rather descent estimate within a number of seconds. Do not let the financial institution talk get you started of the FHA mortgage. There are a great number of homeowners who had been impacted by the current recession and possess lost their jobs. Are we talking size, age, upgrades, tile vs. If you are a real estate investment appraiser and you?re scanning this, I know the reason why your lip starts to quiver plus your eyes are beginning to swell up with tears.

Do you need to pay $230,000 or $260,000 for any particular house? I am reminded from the weatherman?s prediction having a sun partially obscured by the cloud. Don?t you think?Look, I?ve been appraising for pretty much decade now. They are just there to reduce your prices by two and pay out the comission in 60, 90, 4 months, or you cannot pay out the comission by any means. Many inaccurate reports were because of your inexperience. The antique appraisals come in a range of goods like antique dolls furnishings and rare publications. Lenders employ a bank of appraisers which might be generally more conservative compared to the independent appraisers.

Ruthless drug lord takes control of deadly cartel

The new head of the Zetas drug cartel is a former Dallas resident who is scorned as a traitor by many of his own cartel soldiers and mocked as an ex-"car washer" by his enemies, but has risen to power thanks to a fearsome reputation for violence.

"[Miguel Angel Trevino Morales] is extremely brutal, to the point of sadism," says George Grayson, an expert on the Zetas. "He is prepared to advance his interest through unspeakable violence." Grayson's recent book on the cartel, "The Executioner's Men," opens with a scene in which Trevino Morales slowly beats a female police officer to death, in front of her colleagues, with a two-by-four.

Trevino Morales, also known as El 40 or the Monkey, became the uncontested head of the Mexico's most feared drug cartel when former kingpin Heriberto Lazcano was killed in a shootout with Mexican Marines on Sunday. Lazcano had been linked to hundreds of murders, including the massacre of 72 civilians, but Trevino Morales is allegedly even more bloodthirsty. One of his preferred methods of dealing with enemies, say authorities, is burning them alive.

Trevino Morales, 41, was born in Mexico but spent some of his formative years in Dallas, Texas, where authorities say he had a criminal record as a teenager. He has a dozen siblings and reportedly still has family in the Dallas area.

According to the Associated Press, he became a teen go-fer for the Los Tejas gang, which was powerful in the Mexican border city of Nuevo Laredo, just across the Rio Grande from Laredo, Texas.

Trevino Morales joined the Zetas soon after their formation. The Zetas began in the late 1990s as the security wing of the Gulf Cartel. The 14 core members of the Zetas, including Heriberto Lazcano, all had military backgrounds, and took ranks based on when they'd joined the group. Lazcano was known as Z-3. By 2004, due to the death of Z-1 and the arrest of Z-2, Lazcano had become the leader of the Zetas.

Trevino Morales, who did not have a military background, got the designation 40, with his brother taking number 42. In 2005, Miguel Trevino Morales became the boss of the Nuevo Laredo "plaza," or drug territory.

As a newly minted underboss, Trevino Morales had traditional gangster tastes for fast cars, women and fancy guns, and reportedly liked to hunt game imported from Africa. He also, however, developed a developed a particular reputation for brutality in group already renowned for violence. His favored methods for dispatching enemies were dismembering them while still alive, or making them into a "guiso," or stew -- stuffing them in 55-gallon oil drums, adding gasoline and burning them alive.

By 2009, Trevino Morales had been named in multiple federal indictments in Texas, D.C. and New York for alleged crimes ranging from drug trafficking, kidnapping, and money laundering to ordering a half dozen murders in Laredo, Texas. The DEA offered a $5 million reward for information leading to his arrest or conviction, and accused him of controlling more than 200 operatives and smuggling hundreds of kilograms of cocaine into the U.S. weekly.

Early the next year, the Zetas finally split from the Gulf cartel after the Gulf Cartel crossed Trevino Morales. In January 2010, the Gulf Cartel tortured and killed one of his close friends. Trevino Morales responded with an ultimatum demanding that the cartel give up the killer. "Hand over the assassin of my friend," demanded Trevino Morales. "If you don't comply, there will be war."

The order was ignored, and Trevino Morales allegedly began killing members of the Gulf Cartel en masse. The Zetas, now an independent cartel with Trevino Morales second in command, were soon battling the Gulf Cartel for control of Northern Mexico, and winning.

Civil War Inside the Zetas Drug Cartel

By 2011, however, there was a schism within the new cartel between Trevino Morales and those loyal to Heriberto Lazcano. When Zetas boss "El Mamito," Enrique Rejon Aguilar, was arrested in July, he said that he had been betrayed. Though he did not name any names, the next month someone uploaded a slickly produced music video to YouTube that bluntly accused Trevino Morales of being a "Judas" who was disloyal to Lazcano and had betrayed Mamito and other Zetas to the authorities.

Addressed to all the members of "the Mafia," every major drug organization in Mexico by name, and to the general public, "The True Story of Z 40" uses a specially written "narcoballad" to detail the alleged offenses of Trevino Morales against his fellow Zetas, especially leader Heriberto Lazcano.

One of the first images in the five-minute video is a picture of Judas whispering in the ear of Jesus. It then shows repeated images of Trevino Morales with the words "El Judas" under his face, and displays arrest photos of all the Zetas bosses he has allegedly betrayed, who were "captured because they trusted Z 40." Intended as a warning to Lazcano, it asks "El Lazca" why he thinks so many of his underlings have been arrested.

The video also mocks Trevino Morales as a former car washer for Los Tejas, and plasters his face onto photos of police officers and a shiny-suited pop idol.

Rival groups have also disparaged Trevino Morales as a car washer. In March, Joaquin Guzman, AKA El Chapo or Shorty, the head of Mexico's other dominant drug organization, the Sinaloa Cartel, sent his men into Trevino Morales' territory to murder and dismember Zetas soldiers. He issued a public challenge to Trevino Morales on huge banners above the body parts of his victims.

One banner, accompanied by seven severed heads, accused Trevino Morales of failing to use his own head, and of being Heriberto Lazcano's jockstrap. "You will always be a car washer to me," said the banner, which was signed "El Chapo." Another mocked Trevino Morales as a shoeshine boy, car washer and traitor who killed innocent people.

In the summer of 2012, Trevino Morales' brother Jose, a U.S. citizen, was arrested in the U.S. for moneylaundering after allegedly channeling the Zetas's drug money through a successful horseracing operation. Not long after his arrest, the split within the Zetas apparently cost 14 lives. The survivor of a mass execution in San Luis Potosi state in mid-August said that the victims and the killers were Zetas. Authorities believe the massacre was revenge by Trevino Morales on "El Taliban," a leader opposed to EL 40's ascent.

By the end of August, U.S. officials began saying that Trevino Morales seemed to have merged as the winner in the Zetas' civil war, and had officially taken operational control of the Zetas in Mexico from Lazcano.

High-ranking Zetas then began to fall. El Taliban was arrested in late September, "The Squirrel" just last Saturday. Lazcano, who was attending a baseball game with two other men, died in a firefight on Sunday.

Grayson speculates that Trevino Morales may have shared information with U.S. authorities to get better treatment for his brother Jose, who is in U.S. custody.

Trevino Morales must now direct the Zetas against the combined strength of the Gulf Cartel, the Sinaloa Cartel and other players, who have united to drive the Zetas from their "plazas." Grayson says that with Lazcano's death, El Chapo Guzman of the Sinaloa cartel will be aided in his primary goal of taking control of Nuevo Laredo, El 40's home base. Guzman has already dispatched what Grayson calls "shock troops" to help the Gulf Cartel fight the Zetas.

El Chapo's troops will be facing younger, less experienced, and less disciplined Zetas plaza bosses than in the past, says Grayson. But he also notes that the Zetas new leader, in addition to being more violent than his predecessor, may be more cautious and wily as well. "El 40," says Grayson, "would never have been at a baseball game."

(AP) ? Republican vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan is a fiscal conservative, champion of small government and critic of federal handouts. But as a congressman in Wisconsin, Ryan lobbied for tens of millions of dollars on behalf of his constituents for the kinds of largess he's now campaigning against, according to an Associated Press review of 8,900 pages of correspondence between Ryan's office and more than 70 executive branch agencies.

For 12 years in the House, Ryan wrote to federal agencies supporting expansion of food stamps in his Wisconsin district. He supported city officials and everyday constituents who sought stimulus grants, federally guaranteed business loans, grants to invest in green technology and money under the health care law he opposes.

On the campaign trail, Ryan has called those kinds of handouts big-government overreaching. He tells crowds he supports smaller government and rails against what he calls President Barack Obama's wasteful spending, including the president's $800 billion stimulus program. Ryan renewed his criticism about stimulus spending in Thursday night's vice presidential debate.

"Was it a good idea to spend taxpayer dollars on electric cars in Finland or on windmills in China?" Ryan said. "Was it a good idea to borrow all this money from countries like China and spend it on all these various different interest groups?"

Yet the AP's review of Ryan's congressional correspondence showed that he sought stimulus funding on behalf of residents and at one point told federal regulators that cutting a stimulus grant in his district at the 11th hour would be "economically devastating."

Vice President Joe Biden cited during the debate Ryan's letters seeking stimulus money: "I love that. This was such a bad program, and he writes me a letter saying, writes the Department of Energy a letter saying, 'The reason we need this stimulus, it will create growth and jobs.' His words. And now he's sitting here looking at me," Biden said.

Much of Ryan's correspondence is similar to other lawmakers performing constituent duties, describing problems that residents have reported. They include requests such as assisting a family missing airline baggage and helping a man who didn't receive a pancake maker he had ordered.

But in other correspondence, Ryan explicitly supports programs and encourages federal agencies to take actions. He supported in his congressional letters some Wisconsin farms' share of an $11.8 million loan guarantee but later criticized other loan guarantees, such as the $535 million loan that went to now-defunct solar panel maker Solyndra. He asked transportation officials for a grant for green technology and alternative fuels, although his proposed budget as House budget chairman called loans for electric car development "corporate welfare."

He's also supported federal money to help a Kenosha, Wis., community center cover health care costs of low-income families under Obama's health care reform law ? the very program he and Romney say they will repeal if they win the White House.

Ryan spokesman Brendan Buck said AP's findings represented a member of Congress helping people in his district. "Part of being a congressman is vouching for constituents and helping them navigate the federal bureaucracy when asked," he said.

Among the ways Ryan went to bat for his constituents, as detailed in his correspondence:

?A Kenosha community center's grant proposal under the Food Stamps Access Research program, to educate families about the nutritional benefits of food stamps. Ryan said in a 2002 letter the program would increase the enrollment of eligible individuals in the program by providing laptop computers to pre-screen applicants. Ryan's budget proposed cutting food stamps by $134 billion over 10 years, although his spokesman said he "has always made clear we need a strong safety net."

?Letters offering support or forwarding requests for projects funded by stimulus money. Ryan's May 2009 letter to a regional Environmental Protection Agency office asked for its "full consideration" in awarding grant money to an organization under the National Clean Diesel Funding Assistance Program, which reduces diesel emissions.

Ryan also wrote to the EPA in 2009 on behalf of a small town trying to secure $550,000 in stimulus money for utility repairs. Ryan, whose staff requested meetings with the EPA about the matter, said the rescinding of the grant "would be economically devastating" to Sharon, Wis., since it already began spending the money. The EPA said project costs were incurred before October 2008, making the project ineligible for stimulus cash. Ryan has also voiced support for millions in EPA grant money to clean up abandoned building sites in Wisconsin towns.

?A 2002 Agriculture Department loan guarantee to develop a pork-packing and processing plant for farms in the region, including some in his district. The new factory appeared to be "state of the art" and worthy of funding, he said, adding: "It is my hope that the USDA will reach a favorable decision" on the application for a 60 percent federal loan guarantee toward a $19.7 million loan.

?A Kenosha health center's request to use money under Obama's new health care law to help meet health care needs of "thousands of new patients" who lack coverage. Ryan's December 2010 letter to the Health and Human Services Department, first reported by the Nation magazine and also obtained by the AP, appears at odds with his pledge to repeal "Obamacare."

?Support for a grant for the Historical Society in Milton, Wis., from the National Park Service for $271,000 in order to preserve a Civil War-era home. Ryan supported the plan in 2002, saying historical artifacts inside the former transfer point for slaves "have aged to a point where aggressive preservation and restoration is needed to save them." Meanwhile, he's supported recent cuts to the federal budget that would invariably affect national parks.

The AP obtained requested documents from nearly every executive branch agency, although many have been slow to provide any relevant files. Some Obama administration agencies declined AP's request to quickly turn over materials even though they involve an election that's just weeks away.
