Your Guide to Pre- and Post-Workout Nutrition : Healthy Living ...

Nutrition is an absolutely critical area when it comes on to building muscle. The purpose of pre-workout nutrition is to provide the necessary energy going into a workout, while the purpose of post-workout nutrition would be to replenish the body with nutrients that had been lost over the course of the workout.

Follow us

Carbohydrates Are a Must Heading Into a Workout

Carbohydrates are energy giving foods, so this food group is a must-have before an intensive workout. If you are going to be obtaining your carbohydrates from high sugar or processed foods like white bread, sweet biscuits or candy then it's best to have nothing at all. Those carbohydrates give one a false sense of well-being by spiking your insulin level which eventually will lead to a huge crash because the energy from them is temporary. Nothing is more frustrating than having to cut your workout short because you do not have enough energy to carry on anymore. Bad carbs will compromise your workout in the worst possible way so stay away from them.

What Are the Best Carbs to Have Before a Workout?

The best carbs to have before a workout are those that are natural and unprocessed such as fruits and vegetables, brown bread or oats. Those carbs provide long lasting energy that will ensure you get the most out of your workouts. So, if you are going to have carbs then make sure to have the right kind of carbs.

For Pre-Workout Nutrition Go Light

Above all else, when it comes to pre-workout nutrition, go light. A heavy meal before a workout would be a huge disaster. Meals should be consumed at least three hours before a workout to allow the digestion process to take its course. You will be confusing your body if you become involved in an intense workout after a meal which will leave you with an upset stomach and feeling faint.

Save Meals for After Your Workout

The best time to have a meal would be after your workout because at this time your body is starving for nutrients. It is also at this time that your body is best able to rebuild itself once it is provided with the necessary nutrients. These nutrients need to reach your starving muscles as quickly as possible. As a result, whey protein is a great supplement to have post workout since it is a fast acting protein, which basically means it is absorbed very easily by the body. The sooner nutrients are absorbed, the better.

Best Immediate Sources of Energy

Dextrose, which is found in many sports drinks, is very effective at re-energizing the body after an intense exercise. Dextrose is simply sugar and though sugar before a workout would be detrimental to performance, it is a great way to quickly replenish glycogen stores after a workout. Bananas are also great especially since they restore the potassium lost through sweat during a workout.

After a workout some people may find it difficult to consume hard foods but this can be overcome by liquid supplementation. Always travel with a whey protein shake that you can down immediately after your workout is complete. The sooner you feed your starving muscles the better.?

Stay Away From Fats Before and Immediately After a Workout

If there is one food group to avoid before or after a workout it is fats.? Fats take the longest to digest and this is bad for two reason: 1) before a workout you don't want to be consuming anything that will take a long time to digest, as this can make you feel sick during exercise. 2) After a workout you want nutrients to reach your starving muscles as soon as possible, but consuming fats will prolong the time that the carbs and protein you eat gets to your muscles.

Final Thoughts

The main thing to take away from this article is to go light before a workout. Save anything heavier for after your workout but fats should not be had before or immediately after a workout. Bear these tips in mind to maximize the effectiveness of your exercise regime.

Dubai's Abraaj eyes 2013 IPO for Egypt health business

DUBAI (Reuters) - Abraaj Capital, the Middle East's largest private equity firm, is considering selling shares in its Egyptian medical laboratories business in 2013 and hopes to deploy as much as $800 million in new deals, its chief executive said on Monday.

The Dubai-based firm's portfolio company, Al Borg Laboratories, entered into a merger agreement with Al Mokhtabar Laboratories in August to create Integrated Diagnostics Holding, the biggest medical laboratories business in the region.

Before that deal, Abraaj owned about 99 percent of Al Borg.

Abraaj expects to sell part of its 50 percent stake in Integrated Diagnostics Holding in the IPO and the remaining stake to a strategic investor, Chief Executive Mustafa Abdul-Wadood told Reuters in an interview.

"An IPO (of Integrated Diagnostics Holding) seems to be the most natural exit route for us. The company has been self funded for some time and the IPO will guarantee funding for its future growth," Abdul-Wadood said.

"We keep our options open for the listing. There has to be an international aspect to that. I can think of London as one option," he added.

Abraaj struck a deal to buy emerging market fund manager Aureos Capital in February, creating an entity with approximately $7.5 billion in assets under management.

Dubai-based Abraaj has been pushing to expand its geographical footprint in emerging markets. It owns stakes in Egypt's Orascom Construction, budget carrier Air Arabia and supermarket chain Spinneys.

The company plans to deploy as much as $800 million in new deals through the course of next year as it scouts for opportunities in growth markets in consumer sectors, financial services and resources.

"We expect to invest more than 75 percent of our $2 billion fund in the course of next year. We're already at 40 percent so you can say around $800 million will be deployed by end 2013," Abdul-Wadood said.

"You'll probably see a couple of exits next year," he added.

The private equity firm has had a busy year already, investing $125 million in a Moroccan insurance holding firm and tying up with the top shareholder of TransAtlantic Petroleum to buy the Canadian company's oilfield services unit.

It sold its stake in Turkey's Acibadem to Integrated Healthcare Holdings (IHH), a healthcare unit of Malaysia's Khazanah Nasional late in 2011. The deal valued Acibadem at around $1.68 billion, making it one of the largest exits by a private equity firm in the region.

Charges dropped against banker in New York City cab fare dispute

STAMFORD, Connecticut (Reuters) - Connecticut prosecutors on Monday dropped charges against a former high-ranking Morgan Stanley banker accused of stabbing a New York City cab driver in a dispute over a fare, saying the driver had concealed evidence.

William Bryan Jennings, of Darien, Connecticut, had been charged with intimidation as a hate crime, theft and assault against cab driver Mohamed Ammar after they argued last December. Jennings had pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Ammar drove Jennings to Connecticut from a holiday party in Manhattan, but when they arrived at Jennings' driveway, a fight broke out over the fare, which the driver said had been agreed upon at $204.

In a brief hearing in Connecticut Superior Court in Stamford, about 40 miles northeast of New York, prosecutor Steven Weiss said he would not proceed with the case because Ammar had for five months concealed from authorities the pen knife allegedly used to assault him.

"I can't go forward with a case where the victim concealed evidence," Weiss said.

Neither the cab driver, Ammar, of the New York City borough of Queens, nor his attorney, Hassan Ahmad, appeared in court.

At a press conference later on Monday, Ammar said he was "really confused" by the prosecutor's decision to drop the case. "I'm very sad, very upset. This is very unfair."

Ammar's lawyer said police had failed to find the knife in a search of the cab after the incident, but his client uncovered it several weeks later beneath the carpet on the front passenger side of the car.

Ammar told prosecutors in May he had found the knife, said the lawyer, Hassan Ahmad, who conceded the delay was a mistake but said the driver was scared to reveal his discovery because he had touched the knife and left fingerprints on it.

Outside the Stamford courthouse after the hearing earlier on Monday, two of Ammar's supporters said the case should have gone ahead.

"We just wanted a judge and a jury to decide. To drop the case, it sends the wrong message," said Mongi Dhaouadi, a representative of the Connecticut Council of Masajid, a Muslim community organization.

Immediately after the incident came to light, Morgan Stanley put Jennings on leave. He is no longer with the firm.

Eugene Riccio, Jennings' lawyer, said: "This is a lesson in the unfortunate circumstance when someone of prominence gets arrested and the public and press jump to the wrong conclusion."

Jennings, who appeared in court wearing a charcoal suit, blue shirt and blue tie, told reporters after the hearing: "The outcome speaks for itself."

Researchers set sights on new era in neuroprotection

ScienceDaily (Oct. 15, 2012) ? For decades, patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) have had the same experience. Their hands start to shake uncontrollably, their limbs become rigid and they lose their balance. Years before those movement problems set in, many begin struggling with fainting, incontinence, sexual dysfunction, anxiety and depression. Most patients are still treated with a 42-year-old drug called L-DOPA, which temporarily staves off symptoms but can itself cause heart arrhythmias, stomach bleeding and hallucinations.

This punishing experience may explain in part why patients with PD die at twice the rate of those without the disease in the years after their diagnosis. In this light, it's best to tread carefully when talking about early study results that promise something better. That said, a team of researchers at the University of Alabama at Birmingham is excited.

The team has identified a set of experimental drugs called LRRK2 inhibitors that may go beyond symptom relief to directly counter the inflammation and nerve cell death at the root of Parkinson's. At least, these effects have been suggested in mouse and cell culture studies meant to approximate human disease. UAB researchers reported on these findings today in a presentation at Neuroscience 2012, the annual meeting of the Society for Neuroscience in New Orleans.

"We don't yet know what percentage of patients might benefit from LRKK2 inhibitors, but LRRK2 is without a doubt the most exciting target for neuroprotection to have ever been identified in Parkinson's disease," says Andrew West, Ph.D., associate professor in the Department of Neurology within the UAB School of Medicine, who gave the presentation at Neuroscience 2012. "We will repeat our experiments many times before drawing final conclusions, but our ultimate goal is see our compound or something like it enter toxicology studies, and ultimately, clinical trials as soon as is prudent."

While West's compounds are promising, they still face many crucial tests that will decide whether or not they reach human trials. But the field is excited, because this is the first time such a drug target has been found for any neurodegenerative disease. Along with evidence that LRRK2 plays a crucial role in the mechanisms of Parkinson's disease, it is a protein kinase, the same kind of enzyme (although not the same one) that has been safely and potently targeted by existing treatments for other diseases, including the cancer drugs Herceptin, Tarceva and Erbitux.

Why LRRK2?

LRRK2 stands for leucine-rich repeat kinase 2. Kinases are enzymes that attach molecules called phosphates to other molecules to start, stop or adjust cellular processes. Past studies found that the most common LRRK2 mutation, called G2019S, makes LRRK2 slightly over-active. The idea is to dial LRRK2 back with drugs.

Whether it's a bad version of a gene, an unlucky flu infection, a head injury or just age, something makes a protein called alpha-synuclein build up in the nerve cells of Parkinson's patients, contributing to their self-destruction. Unfortunately, alpha-synuclein and proteins like it are not part of a traditional set of "drug-able" targets. Once alpha-synuclein builds up, the question becomes whether the brain will handle it well or amplify the disease.

LRRK2, to West's mind, is a critical decision-maker in the body's answer to that question. He thinks it operates at the intersection between alpha-synuclein, neurotransmission and immune responses, which fight infectious diseases but also create disease-related inflammation when unleashed at the wrong moment, or in the wrong place or amount. Not everyone who has a LRRK2 mutation develops the disease, but West's team thinks it becomes important when combined with other factors.

Past studies have shown that alpha-synuclein build-up in nerve cells activates nearby immune cells of the brain called microglia, and that these microglia express high levels of LRRK2. Recent cell studies in West's lab suggest that mutated, overactive LRRK2 strengthens inflammatory responses in microglia and that inhibiting LRRK2 reduces them. Preliminary data also suggests LRRK2-driven inflammation raises the rate of nerve cell death. It's worth noting, however, that neither these mechanisms nor their relationships with each other and Parkinson's disease have been fully confirmed.

"The beauty is that we don't necessarily need to confirm an exact mechanism to move drugs into clinical trials," says West. "One could argue that human PD is too complex to fully model in other animals. Many predict that we will not know if we understand Parkinson's disease until we get safe, potent, specific drugs into human studies and until one of them halts or reverses the disease process."

Toward a new treatment

In West's view, the perfect drug would get past the barrier that keeps toxins (and many drugs) in the bloodstream from entering the brain, and then past the proteins that pump toxins out of the brain if they slip through the first barrier. This ideal drug would have its effect and then clear out of the body in a reasonable timeframe to avoid building up in any one organ. It also would dial down the activity of LRRK2 alone, and only enough to reduce its signaling to normal.

West's presentation at the meeting described how his team's lead compound has achieved these goals in some preclinical disease models. Specifically, the team has identified potent inhibitors that affect only LRRK2 in a test involving more than 300 kinases. The researchers have increased the potency of candidate compounds that show good solubility, stability and brain penetration. Moving forward, they will re-test their best compound in the best rodent model, conduct toxicology studies, and then -- should all go well -- seek permission from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to start a clinical trial.

While West leads the ongoing UAB effort, Robert Galemmo Jr., Ph.D., leads a group of collaborators at Birmingham's Southern Research Institute, together with Joseph Maddry, Ph.D., director of the Medicinal Chemistry Department there. Making this research possible have been UAB- and SRI-related entities like the Alabama Drug Discovery Alliance and the Center for Clinical and Translational Science, which supported West's LRRK2 work with an early pilot grant. The partnerships have allowed UAB researchers to move drugs closer to clinical trials by taking on roles once shouldered exclusively by pharmaceutical companies.

The research also has been funded by private philanthropists within the Birmingham community who are dedicated to advancing new drugs to treat PD. West is the John A. and Ruth R. Jurenko Scholar at UAB, which reflects the Jurenko family's vital support of this work.

(AP) ? As Mitt Romney's campaign claimed new momentum in the race for the White House, President Barack Obama's political advisers on Sunday promised the incumbent would unleash his more aggressive side in Tuesday's debate to prevent their Republican rival from delivering another "magical and theatrical performance."

Obama and Romney hunkered down in private debate preparation for much of the day as aides offered a pre-debate sparring match on television.

They disagreed on much, but agreed that Romney bested Obama in their first meeting nearly two weeks ago ? a performance that shifted the direction of a race that had favored the president but has since tightened in national and battleground state polls.

"He knows Mitt Romney had a better night at the first debate," Obama spokeswoman Jennifer Psaki said of the president. "The American people should expect to see a much more energized President Obama."

Ed Gillespie, senior adviser to the Romney campaign, quipped that the former Massachusetts governor would be prepared regardless of Obama's adjustments: "The president can change his style. He can change his tactics. He can't change his record. "

Obama spent the day with aides in swing state Virginia, while Romney stayed close to his Boston-area home ahead of Tuesday's prime-time, town hall-style debate at Hofstra University in Hempstead, N.Y., exactly three weeks before the Nov. 6 election.

Romney's advisers suggested the Republican nominee would continue to moderate his message ? in tone, if not substance ? as he did in the Oct. 3 meeting to help broaden his appeal to the narrow slice of undecided voters. In recent days, Romney has promised his tax plan would not benefit the wealthy, emphasized his work with Democrats as Massachusetts governor and downplayed plans to strengthen the nation's abortion laws.

He told an Iowa newspaper this week, for example, that he would not pursue abortion-related legislation if elected. That's in direct conflict with last year's pledge to the anti-abortion group, the Susan B. Anthony List, to cut federal funding from Planned Parenthood and support legislation to "protect unborn children who are capable of feeling pain from abortion."

"I think Mitt Romney's performance was, indeed, magical and theatrical. Magical and theatrical largely because for 90 minutes he walked away from a campaign he had been running for more than six years previous to that," Obama senior campaign adviser Robert Gibbs said of the first debate.

While the debates have proved critical, they are one element in larger campaigns that involve extensive ground games in virtually every state across the nation and a television ad war that may consume $1 billion before Election Day.

Through Monday, either absentee or in-person early voting has begun in 43 states.

Romney on Sunday released a new television spot showcasing footage from running mate Paul Ryan's first and only face off with Vice President Joe Biden last week. The ad features clips of Ryan saying the government "can't keep spending money we don't have."

The comments are juxtaposed with video from the debate of Biden laughing.

Aides said the president was clear-eyed about the need to have a better showing in the second meeting. After a listless first performance, Obama was focused on delivering more pointed and aggressive responses.

He was ensconced in hours of debate practice Sunday at Kingsmill Resort, a luxury vacation spot in Williamsburg, Va. The president was shuttling between a house on the campus where he is staying and the resort's main building, where aides are set up for debate practice.

The campaign picked the riverfront Virginia resort in part to get the president away from distractions at the White House. Some of Obama's official duties, including the attack in Libya that led to the death of four Americans, forced the president to cancel or cut short some of his prep sessions ahead of the first debate, and aides acknowledge he entered the first face-off with less practice than they had hoped.

Virginia was also a political strategic pick for Obama. While he has no formal public events there, his mere presence in the competitive swing state is designed to drive local media coverage just over three weeks from Election Day.

Aides said Obama and his team were both studying up on policy and holding mock debates, featuring Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., playing the role of Romney. Anita Dunn, a former Obama aide brought back to help with debate preparations, was playing the role of debate moderator Candy Crowley.

For Obama, the challenge is to be more aggressive in combating his Republican rival during the town hall-style debate, which often requires candidates to also show empathy with the questioner.

Campaign officials insisted they were more focused on substance over style.

"The question is not just which candidate connects with the questioner, but who has the better policies for the American people for the next four years," Psaki said. "On that front the president has a great advantage."

But Romney's team claimed the advantage on Sunday, citing polls that suggest the race is essentially a tossup.

After attending church services Sunday morning, the Republican candidate devoted several hours to debate practice at a hotel near his suburban Boston home. Romney, who has been setting aside time for debate practice since June, was joined by his senior strategy team, including Ohio Sen. Rob Portman, who has been playing Obama.

"I think the wind is at Gov. Romney's back and we're clearly on momentum," Gillespie said. "This is going to be a close race. I knew that when we were behind in the polls. I know it now when we're ahead in the polls."

Gillespie made his comments on "Fox News Sunday"; Gibbs appeared on CNN's "State of the Union."
