In this Sept. 19, 2008 handout photo provided by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, astronomer Adam Riess sits in his office at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. The trio were honored Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2011 "for the discovery of the acclerating expansion of the universe through observations of distant supernovae." (AP Photo/The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, Gail Burton)

(AP) ? A Johns Hopkins University professor was one of three scientists awarded the 2011 Nobel Prize in physics Tuesday for discovering that the universe is expanding at a faster and faster rate, contrary to science's conventional wisdom.

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced that Adam Riess, an astronomy and physics professor at the university, won the prize with fellow American Saul Perlmutter and U.S.-Australian citizen Brian Schmidt. Perlmutter heads the Supernova Cosmology Project at the University of California, Berkeley. Schmidt is the head of the High-z Supernova Search Team at the Australian National University in Weston Creek, Australia

Working in two separate research teams during the 1990s ? Perlmutter in one and Schmidt and Riess in the other ? the scientists raced to map the universe's expansion by using telescopes to study and analyze a particular type of supernovas, or exploding stars. They were surprised to find that far-away galaxies were racing away from each other at an ever-increasing speed.

Riess, 41, said he got a phone call around 5:30 a.m. Several Swedish men were on the line, at which point "I knew it wasn't Ikea," the Swedish furniture retailer.

"My jaw dropped. I couldn't believe it. I didn't know if this would happen ever," he said in a telephone interview.

The work Riess is being honored for stems from a 1998 discovery that the rate at which the universe is expanding is speeding up, a discovery Riess called "truly startling."

The discovery contradicted conventional scientific wisdom that the universe's expansion would be slowing down as a result of what Riess calls the "gravitational glue" of the rest of the universe. The work led to the discovery of what's called dark energy, which is believed to be responsible for the universe's accelerating expansion, though researchers still don't know much about it.

Riess, who has an undergraduate degree in physics MIT and a doctorate in astrophysics from Harvard, said he spends the last two classes of his introductory astronomy course at Johns Hopkins talking about the discovery. He tells students in his "Stars and the Universe" class that they are fortunate to have such an "exciting mystery" to help solve.

"I sort of turn to them at that point and say, 'I hope many of you continue on in this field and help us understand this mystery,'" he said.

Riess said that as a child he loved science and wanted to study dinosaurs. He didn't use a telescope until graduate school, he said. He says he finds looking through a telescope awe inspiring.

"Most of it's a mystery," he said of looking out at the universe. "If we very carefully study this ancient tired light we can get some clues as to what really is the universe."

A professor at Johns Hopkins University last won a Nobel Prize two years ago. Carol Greider shared the 2009 prize in medicine for her work helping solving the mystery of how chromosomes protect themselves from degrading when cells divide.

Survival Food ? 3 Areas you may need to store food for emergency ...

Survival foods come in many forms. The most popular options are dehydrated foods, freeze dried food, MRE's (meals ready to eat) and emergency food stamps bars.

The good news is that these foods taste better than ever before and you have many choices (for example, you can eat a gourmet meal of spaghetti with meat sauce, a side of cranberry beans or broccoli and cheese for dessert ? all from freeze-dried meals).

Each type has its own emergency foodAdvantages and disadvantages. It's up to you which foods you want to buy. But what are some situations where you should be the preservation of food to survive?

Here are three areas where you consider storing emergency food and survival could be:

No. 1-Survival Kit

If you have a survival kit is 72 hours or a hurricane survival kit for your car, is one of the most important things you need food. Many experts recommend that you prepareat least 72 hours of food ? and preferably more.

So it is necessary that the food is simple and easy to transport, high-calorie and compact with a long shelf life (so you do not constantly rolled every few years).

That is, where do the survival food, for example, you can easily fit a week of freeze-dried meals in a backpack. You can also use a block of non-stimulating thirst emergency food stamps bars, which will last for 3 days and take verylittle space.

And most of these foods are either already prepared or easy to do. This is ideal for an emergency situation as it is likely to stir up any time (or energy), a gourmet dinner.

# 2 outdoor activities such as hiking, camping, hunting, etc.

Backpackers and other outdoor enthusiasts such as hikers, campers, hunters or fishermen generally want to survive food cache, instead of food "normal" pack, because they are differentAdvantages:

They are light and compact. You can do a lot more of these foods in your backpack or camping gear to adjust, as you would with regular food.

They do not spoil or wilt. These foods usually have a long-term (5 to 30 years) and not as easily as if you are meat, fruit or other foods that spoil should be kept in the fridge really.

Are resistant. Food as MRES are built to be tough and endure such conditions encountered at approximately. You do not have to worry about yoursoggy sandwich or get melt your chocolate.

Many of them are high in calories. Numerous outdoor activities are strenuous and requires a lot of energy. Survival and some meals you get a lot of calories in a small package.

For example, you may notice that provide MRE 1200 ? 1700 calories per meal. So instead of subjecting a fridge packed full of food, only a few bars of emergency rations and MRES, and you're ready to go.

# 3 emergency foodStorage

Experts recommend that everyone be prepared for at least a month's worth of emergency food in their home or somewhere with easy access (such as a shed or cellar cool).

Depending on where you think things are going in this country can be more. Many people I know are saved for up to one year worth of food.

Even if you do not need it all, in a crisis, you are able to exchange it for other things that may be necessaryMedicines, water and cooking utensils.

A store of emergency food in the house helps to protect against disasters such as artificial or natural disturbances, floods, earthquakes, hurricanes and riots. It may even in extreme situations like a terrorist attack or nuclear accident or a hyperinflation to help.

Think of it as eating a type of insurance. We hope that you will never use again. But if something happened ? it could save your life.

So those are three areas where you might want toa supply of food to survive. What kind of food you choose really depends on what your goals are, take, how many calories you need, taste preferences, etc. time to educate themselves about the possibilities, so you can easily with what you need, feel.

Centennial College is One of Toronto's Standout Community ...

Reputation is one of the things to look at when deciding between community colleges. If you want to attend an institution that can lay claim to being the first community college in the province of Ontario, your only choice is Centennial College. Located in the east end of Toronto, the college has four centrally located campuses that are easily accessible by public transportation or vehicle.

One of the unique things about this community college is that each campus caters to a different School of study. This allows the campuses to be fully-equipped with exactly what is needed for students to learn academically and participate in practical exercises that result in them heading into their chosen field with hands-on experience. For example, Ashtonbee Campus primarily houses programs from the School of Transportation. It is the largest transportation training centre in Ontario and boasts fully-equipped labs that contain donated cars, car parts and tools on which students in programs and apprenticeships such as Alignment and Brake Technician, Autobody Repair Techniques, Transmission Technician, Heavy Duty Equipment Technician, and even Motorcycle Technician practice. In addition, there is an airplane hangar for students of this community college's aviation programs. Meanwhile, at the Centre of Creation Communications, students will find in-house TV studios, art studios, large creative space and more so that they may be able to complete creativity-based programs such as Digital Animation, Magazine and Book Publishing, Journalism, Fine Arts Studio, Marketing and Children's Entertainment. Another Centennial College campus is Morningside. Nestled in the Rouge Valley Conservation Area, the Morningside campus is an environmentally friendly building home to the School of Health Studies, as well as selected Engineering Technology and Applied Science programs. It, therefore, is equipped with high-tech computer labs, simulated health clinics, hospital set-ups, beauty salons and more for students in programs such as Nursing, Esthetician, Paramedic, Computer and Communications Networking, Medical Robotics and Animation and more. The final, and largest, campus of this community college is Progress Campus, from which many of Centennial College's business programs are taught. It is also the site from which the Hospitality School conducts its training. The Hospitality School has teaching facilities such as a fully functioning restaurant and conference centre. Specific programs conducted out of this campus include: Accounting, Contact Centre Operations, Human Resources, Event Management " Festival and Conferences, Cultural Heritage and Site Management and more.

In total, Centennial College offers more than 95 diploma and certificate programs on a full-time and Continuing Education basis, which are career oriented. These career-oriented programs emphasize practical experience with laboratory learning, industry and agency placements, as well as co-op education. The community college supports enrolments of 14,400 full-time students and 28,000 in Continuing Education, which offers 160 programs with over 1,200 courses and with discussion-oriented classrooms, experience 97 per cent learner satisfaction.

Jason details the main points that students need to know about Centennial College during their research of community colleges.

Gunmen free American woman in southern Philippines (Reuters)

MANILA (Reuters) ? Muslim gunmen have freed a Philippine-born American woman after nearly three months in captivity on a remote southern island in the Philippines where al Qaeda-linked militants are active, but her son was not released, police said on Monday.

Police investigating reports of armed men in Maluso town on the southern island of Basilan found a dazed Gefra Lunsmann wandering in a village on the outskirts of the town at around 10 p.m. on Sunday, said Chief Inspector Dinar Hassan.

"She was very happy to see us but she looked weak," Hassan said, adding the woman, who is married to a German national, was taken to a police station and given food.

Gefra Lunsmann and her teenage son, Kevin Eric, were on vacation at a beachfront property on Tictabon island near the port city of Zamboanga when 14 gunmen abducted them on July 12 and took them to the jungle on Basilan island.

The U.S. embassy in Manila confirmed and welcomed Lunsmann's release.

Zamboanga City Mayor Celso Lobregat held a news conference on Monday and presented Lunsmann, who was wearing a white baseball cap and dark shirt, to the media.

She sat for a few minutes without speaking before security men, including U.S. law enforcement agents, took her away.

"The report indicates she was freed and was made to walk to the village," Lobregat said.

He said the gunmen had kept in communication with the woman's husband, adding that Lunsmann had not indicated if a ransom had been paid.

"From the quick response and the tight hug that she gave, she was happy to be released," he added. "Her son is still in captivity."

Lobregat said he had been informed that the gunmen were supposed to free the mother and son together.

No group has claimed responsibility for the abduction, but authorities believe the gunmen are from a kidnap-for-ransom gang with ties to the al Qaeda-linked Abu Sayyaf militant group.

In June, the United States, Britain and Australia warned their citizens against going to areas in the southern Philippines, particularly resorts and dive sites on Basilan, Jolo and Tawi-tawi areas, because of the danger of abduction and bombs.
