Ask Engadget: What's the best way to store my media collection?

Ask Engadget

We know you've got questions, and if you're brave enough to ask the world for answers, then here's the outlet to do so. This week's Ask Engadget inquiry is from Michael, who is suffering from a storage crunch. If you're looking to ask one of your own, drop us a line at ask [at] engadget [dawt] com.

"I'm a bargain-basement kinda guy, and I've picked up lots of DVDs cheaply during the sale season(s). I was planning to rip my collection with Handbrake so I could watch them on my iPad, but my 1TB HDD is already close to being maxed out! Is there a better solution out there than just buying a 2TB HDD now, waiting a year and buying a 3TB HDD when the prices come down? Is there a cheap RAID-style system that plays nicely with my iTunes? Please help!"

  • You can pick up a standalone 3TB external HDD for between $150 and $200,
  • Or you could take the leap and set up an iTunes home server, perhaps using the cheapest Synology DiskStation, which is $200 plus the cost of the drives. That way you can get a 4TB iTunes server for just under $400.
  • You could also snag a Drobo that'll give you the same storage options with significantly increased expandability, up to 16TB in the future.

That said, perhaps our friendly readers know a way to tame this man's ever growing media collection, so if you've already set up your own system, why not share your knowledge in the comments below?

In Relationships, the Worst Offense is a Good Defense | Psych Central

In Relationships, the Worst Offense is a Good DefenseRespectfully receiving critical feedback is a key skill for a happy and healthy relationship. The ability to temporarily put aside our own feelings and our own way of seeing the situation, and truly listen to our partner?s feelings and perspective, allows us to safely air grievances and work through conflicts. Without that safe space, the love and goodwill of a relationship runs the risk of being burned up by resentment and anger.

No one, however, likes to be criticized. No one likes hearing how they are disappointing the person they love. No one likes feeling blamed, misunderstood or under-appreciated. And so a lot of us are experts in defense ? both in defending ourselves and hitting up against the defenses of our partner.

Do any of these defense tactics sound familiar?

  1. Placating. Critical feedback is tuned out and brushed over. ?Yes, dear, okay, honey, whatever you say.?
  2. Invalidating. One partner tries to convince the other that his or her complaint is not legitimate. ?Why are you making such a big deal out of this? Are you just trying to find things to be upset about? This isn?t even a real problem.?
  3. Chronic postponing. If one partner brings up a complaint, the other continually finds a way to put off the discussion. ?You are really bringing this up now? I?m way too busy right now to talk about this.?
  4. Guilting. Critical feedback gets diverted when the recipient turns the conversation around to his or her own feelings and fears. ?Why are you being so mean to me? How do you think that makes me feel?? There also might be crying, pouting, brooding, disconnecting emotionally or physically, or even acting out in self-destructive ways.
  5. Globalizing. Instead of focusing on the actual issue that a partner is raising, the other person turns it into something huge and global, as a way to obscure and avoid the issue. ?I am such a disappointment, I never do anything right. You are never satisfied.?
  6. Narrowing. Instead of addressing the deeper issue, excuses and reasons about a specific incident are used to close off the critical feedback. ?I didn?t feel well this morning and couldn?t focus on anything. I had to work that night. I was late because there was a traffic jam.?
  7. Bullying. Intimidation is used to stop critical feedback. This could be raising one?s voice, pounding a fist on the table, or making vague or concrete threats about what might happen if the other partner continues to try to talk about the issue.
  8. Ignoring. In the face of criticism, one person just walks out of the room or house or simply ignores the other partner when he or she tries to express a complaint.
  9. Transferring responsibility. The partner who is being criticized passes the responsibility back to the other partner. ?You are just too sensitive, too critical, never happy.? ?Maybe if you acted differently, I would be different.? This responsibility transfer can even be in the form of pointing to the feedback itself as the cause of behavior. ?Maybe if you didn?t nag me so much, I would do more of what you ask.?
  10. One-upping. Critical feedback is deflected by turning the conversation into competitive grievance one-upsmanship. ?I can?t believe you are upset. I am upset. You do so many things that bother me.?
  11. Stonewalling. One partner shuts down any conversation involving critical feedback by stating that he or she is too rigid to even discuss possibilities for change. ?That?s just the way I am. Live with it. This is what you signed up for when we got together. If you can?t accept me for who I am, there?s the door.?
  12. Denying. The critical feedback is flatly denied. ?I didn?t do that. I didn?t say that.?
  13. Neutralizing. The person receiving the grievance ?neutralizes? the criticism by explaining that his or her intention is being misunderstood. ?I wasn?t trying to upset you. I don?t think you should be mad at me when I was only trying to be helpful.?

Bringing awareness to your own defense tactics, and being able to recognize and name your partner?s defense strategies, are essential in moving toward healthy communication and a healthy relationship. This awareness allows you to begin challenging your own defenses, work on becoming strong and patient enough to listen openly to criticism, and practice standing your ground when you start to feel derailed by the skilled defensiveness of your partner.

Be prepared, however, for a bumpy road forward. Dismantling our defenses is ridiculously hard work. Even if the feedback is given in a reasonably respectful way (which is a big if, and certainly must be addressed in order for a couple to move toward healthy communication), our defensive patterns are deeply ingrained.

So when you, or your partner, make even a slight shift toward openness, celebrate the moment. Allow yourselves to feel the thrill of being strong enough to disarm defensiveness and respectfully hear criticism, and remind yourselves to treasure the deep security of having a relationship that can hold safe space for the reality that, no matter how hard we try, sometimes we upset and disappoint the people we love.

Binder Reviews On Amazon.com Fill With Romney-Related Comments

avery-binderOK, it's no Three Wolf Moon t-shirt, but it's still pretty funny. Following Mitt Romney's comment?about "binders full of women" at this week's presidential debate, the customer review sections for various binders on Amazon.com have been filling up with hilarious comments. For example, see this?Avery Durable View Binder?or this Avery Economy Binder. "My advice is to be very careful when ordering, because what I received were binders full of men," writes one reviewer. "I found it to be a little too cramped for my taste. Usually when I'm inside a binder, I like enough room to stretch out, do Pilates or just take a nap spread eagle. However, all of the women in the binder were very pleasant and I made a few great friends," says another female shopper.

Freedom for yoga | Vancity Buzz | Vancouver Blog

Vancouver Canada News Freedom For Yoga | An Evening of FREE Music with Pepe Danza & Friends

Date & Time: Sunday, October 21st 6PM ? 11PM

Place: Trout Lake Community Centre (Map & Directions)

This event is in support of BC yogis.

The path of yoga is a private one of devotion that embraces body, mind and spirit. Yoga (which means union) promotes health, vitality, peace and freedom.

Yoga colleges and studios that offer 200 and 500 hour yoga teacher training are small businesses within their communities, and as such, are rightly subject to the normal Government regulations that protect the health and safety of their students.

Most of these colleges are also members of the Canadian Yoga Alliance which belongs to the International Yoga Federation, and are therefore regulated to international standards by organizations that understand the nature of yoga.

In B.C. however, these yoga colleges are also subject to regulation from the Private Career Training Institutions Agency ?PCTIA?, an agency of the BC Government?s Ministry of Advanced Education. PCTIA was created to set and regulate standards for institutions that offer career training, which, in unregulated industries may be useful.

But in the yoga community, it is an unnecessary and even destructive level of bureaucratic interference. PCTIA charges these yoga colleges and studios onerous and exorbitant fees (which must be passed on to yoga students) and requires complex and time-consuming administrative burdens that only serve to drain and tax the prana life force from dedicated yoga teachers.

BC yogis unite! We need you to be there and lend your voice to stop government regulation on yoga.

Show the world that you?re attending, on our Facebook Event Page.

Hatha Yoga is a physical and spiritual practice that has revolutionized the health and consciousness of Canadians over the last 20 years. Government-sponsored agencies have been increasingly opportunistic in extracting money from Yoga studios through administration fees, fines, and even sending them to bankruptcy if they cannot pay. This is becoming a game where the small studio?s are at risk of losing their ability to serve because of bureaucratic greed.

This is an event that calls upon Yogi?s to unite and show their support for the practice that has nurtured them, and to stand up for the studio?s that are under pressure to pay high fee?s for a practice that is already regulated by respected international bodies such as the Yoga Alliance. If we don?t show that we care, the government won?t either. These are moments that can make a difference in the lives of millions of future practitioners if we come together and make a stand.

We [Prana Yoga College] have created a beautiful evening of yoga, music and dance to shift the paradigm of yoga and activism. Come out and bring your friends for a beautiful evening that will also be political statement to the government that the freedom to dance, stretch, and teach others how to be balanced is part of the revolution.

Library Boy: March 2013 Symposium on Legacy of Retired Supreme ...

The University of Ottawa will host a symposium on March 22-23, 2013 Celebrating the Contributions of Justice Louise Charron.

Madame Charron retired from the Supreme Court of Canada recently:

"This Symposium, like past events, provides an important opportunity for diverse members of the Canadian legal community to come together to celebrate and honour Justice Charron and her exceptional contributions to the Canadian legal landscape during her 23-year judicial career.? Although Justice Charron?s jurisprudence spans a variety of subject areas including private law, contracts, family law and constitutional law, she is best known for her foundational contributions to the world of criminal law and the notoriously complex law of evidence.? During her nearly seven years on the Supreme Court of Canada, Justice Charron penned more of the Court?s criminal law jurisprudence than any other judge, and many of her decisions truly revolutionized the face of Canadian criminal law.? Committed to legal education and continuing education for lawyers and judges, Justice Charron has also served as the Associate Director of the National Judicial Institue and most recently joined the Advisory Board of the University of Ottawa?s Legal Writing Academy, a flagship program designed to elevate the writing skills of our JD students through innovative course offerings, peer-to-peer mentoring and writing workshops."

"The Symposium will result in a bilingual, edited collection of peer-reviewed scholarship broadly motivated by Justice Charron?s career and her diverse areas of expertise.? The publication of an edited volume of essays will create a permanent record of the Symposium proceedings and will allow for the broader dissemination of the ideas and analyses presented at the Symposium. Fitness Friday: How's Your Posture? - Green Mountain at Fox Run

I had my first appointment ever with a chiropractor yesterday. The jury is still out on whether or not she will help my back feel better, but it got me thinking about how my posture could be contributing to my back woes. Lo and behold, we wrote a blog post about this very topic a while back, and I thought it was worth sharing again.?

It has been estimated that in Western countries, 75 percent of work performed is done seated. We sit at work and we sit as we drive home to go sit on our couch!! How does this affect our posture and contribute to back pain?

Effects of Posture

In simple terms, posture can be defined as the way one holds their body while standing, sitting and walking. According to the Mayo Clinic, posture is an important part of preventing back problems and fatigue. When the back is straight, the spine is supported and stabilized, but as you slouch or otherwise engage in poor posture, your spine no longer has the support it needs to stay balanced, leading to many health problems.

Sore Muscles. When you slouch, the muscles have to work harder to keep the spine stabilized and protected. The extra work on these muscles can cause muscle tightness and fatigue. This can lead to chronic issues with tight and sore muscles from the neck all the way down to the lower back, affecting flexion and extension, which allow you to bend forward and lift objects.

Spinal Curvature. When bad posture is practiced, the spine can experience pressure, slowly influencing the spine curves to change their positions. The spine is specifically designed to help absorb shock and keep you balanced, but as the spinal position changes, this ability becomes compromised.

Subluxations. Once the spinal curve is altered, one major issue that can occur are subluxations. Vertebral subluxations occur when a vertebrae become misaligned from the rest of the spine. This affects the overall integrity of the spinal column. These misalignments can eventually cause chronic health problems including stress and irritation of surrounding spinal nerves.

Blood Vessel Constriction. As bad posture changes the alignment of the spine, blood vessel constriction can occur. The constriction of the blood vessels around the spine can cut off blood supply to the cells of the muscles, which can affect nutrient and oxygen supply. Blood vessel constriction can also raise your chances of clot formation.

Nerve Constriction. As the spine changes in shape, the resulting movements or subluxations can put pressure on the surrounding spinal nerves. Because the nerves that connect to the spine come from all over the body, these pinched nerves can not only cause neck and back pain but may also cause pain in other unrelated areas of the body.

So, what does this all mean? In a nutshell ? posture is paramount to good back health. How is your posture?

Conflicting images emerge of NY terror suspect

NEW YORK (AP) ? At the Missouri college where Quazi Mohammad Rezwanul Ahsan Nafis enrolled, a classmate said he often remarked that true Muslims don't believe in violence.

That image seemed startlingly at odds with the Bangladesh native's arrest in an FBI sting this week on charges of trying to blow up the Federal Reserve Bank in New York with what he thought was a 1,000-pound car bomb.

"I can't imagine being more shocked about somebody doing something like this," said Jim Dow, a 54-year-old Army veteran who rode home from class with Nafis twice a week. "I didn't just meet this kid a couple of times. We talked quite a bit. ... And this doesn't seem to be in character."

Nafis' family in Dhaka, Bangladesh, denied he could have been involved in the plot. His parents said he was incapable of such actions and came to America only to study.

Federal investigators, often accused by defense attorneys of entrapping and leading would-be terrorists along, said the 21-year-old Nafis made the first move over the summer, reaching out for accomplices and eventually contacting a government informant, who then went to federal authorities.

They said he also selected his target, drove the van loaded with dummy explosives up to the door of the bank, and tried to set off the bomb from a hotel room using a cellphone he thought had been rigged as a detonator.

During the investigation, he and the informant corresponded via Facebook and other social media, talked on the phone and met in hotel rooms, according to a law enforcement official who was not authorized to speak publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.

Nafis spoke of his admiration for Osama bin Laden, talked of writing an article about his plot for an al-Qaida-affiliated magazine, and said he would be willing to be a martyr but preferred to go home to his family after carrying out the attack, authorities said. And he also talked about wanting to kill President Barack Obama and bomb the New York Stock Exchange, a law enforcement official said.

Investigators said in court papers that he came to the U.S. bent on jihad and worked out the specifics of a plot when he arrived. While Nafis believed he had the blessing of al-Qaida and was acting on behalf of the terrorist group, he has no known ties, according to federal officials.

Nafis, who at the time of his arrest Wednesday was working as a busboy at a restaurant in Manhattan, was jailed without bail. His attorney has not commented on the case, but in other instances where undercover agents and sting operations were used, lawyers have argued entrapment.

Investigators would not say exactly how he initially contacted the government informant.

Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly, whose department had a role in the arrest as a member of a joint federal-state terrorism task force, said the entrapment argument rarely prevails.

"You have to be otherwise not disposed to do a crime," Kelly said. "And if it's your intent to do a crime, and somehow there are means made available, then generally speaking, the entrapment defense does not succeed."

Meanwhile, a law enforcement official said the bomb plot investigation led to the arrest of a San Diego man on child porn charges.

Howard Willie Carter II was arraigned Thursday in federal court in San Diego on three counts of child pornography. He pleaded not guilty.

Investigators discovered child porn on Carter's computer after he communicated online with Nafis.

The official was not authorized to speak publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.

Carter wasn't charged in the bomb plot, but he's listed as an unnamed co-conspirator in the federal complaint against Nafis.

Nafis was a terrible student in his native Bangladesh, and his middle-class parents said he persuaded them to send him to study in the U.S. as a way of improving his job prospects. They don't believe he was planning an attack.

His father, a banker, said Nafis was so timid he couldn't venture out onto the roof alone.

"My son couldn't have done it," Quazi Ahsanullah said, weeping.

"He is very gentle and devoted to his studies," he said, pointing to Nafis' time studying at the private North South University in Dhaka.

Belal Ahmed, a spokesman for the university, said Nafis was put on probation and threatened with expulsion if he didn't bring his grades up. Nafis eventually stopped coming to school, Ahmed said.

Ahsanullah said his son had argued that a U.S. degree would give him a better chance at success in Bangladesh. "I spent all my savings to send him to America," the father said.

Nafis moved to Missouri, where he studied cybersecurity at Southeast Missouri State University. He also became vice president of the school's Muslim Student Association and began attending a mosque.

But he withdrew after one semester and requested over the summer that his records be transferred to a school in Brooklyn. The university declined to identify which school.

Dow, his former classmate at Southeast Missouri State, said Nafis spoke admiringly of bin Laden. At the same time, "he told me he didn't really believe bin Laden was involved in the twin towers because he said bin Laden was a religious man, and a religious man wouldn't have done something like that," Dow said.

He said Nafis gave Dow a copy of the Quran and asked him to read it. But he "didn't rant or rave or say crazy stuff," Dow said.

"What really shocked me the most was he had specifically spoken to me about true Muslims not believing in violence," Dow said.

Dion Duncan of St. Louis, a fellow student and member of the Muslim organization, said: "Nafis was a good kid. He showed no traces of anti-Americanism, or death to America, or anything like that. He was a trustworthy, honest kid."

"He was polite and courteous. He was helpful. All the things you would expect from a good Muslim kid. He prayed five times a day," Duncan said.

What Car Insurance Means to You Peter Konig Art

Oct19

Renters Insurance Mobile AL Every year, more cars and drivers hit the highways. With countless vehicles on the road, crashes will happen. Automobile insurance can be the difference between a minor setback and a major hassle. How can you decide what insurance you require and how to buy it? Car insurance protects you by paying for damage or injury you cause others while driving your car, damage to your car or injury to you or your passengers from a crash, and specific other occurrences, such as theft. Car insurance is required by law in all states and provinces. Without insurance, you risk having to pay the total price of any harm you cause others or of repairing or replacing your car if it is damaged or stolen.Liability pays for damages due to bodily injury and property damage to others for which you are responsible. Bodily injury damages include medical expenses, lost wages and pain and suffering. Property damage includes damaged property and loss of use of property. It also covers your defense and court costs if you are sued. State laws usually mandate minimum amounts, but higher amounts are available and usually recommended. Personal injury protection: This is required in some states and is optional in others. Sometimes referred to as no-fault coverage, this pays the medical treatment for you or your passengers regardless of who was at fault. It may also pay for lost earnings, replacement of services and funeral expenses. The minimum amount of this insurance is usually set by the state. Medical payments: This type of coverage is available in non-no-fault states and will pay no matter who is responsible for the accident. It pays for an insured person?s reasonable and necessary medical or funeral expenses for bodily injury from a crash. Collision: Pays for damage to your car caused by a collision. Comprehensive: Applies if your car is stolen or damaged by causes other than collision, including fire, wind, hail, flood or vandalism. Uninsured motorist: Pays for damages when an insured person is injured in a crash caused by another person who does not have liability insurance or by a person who cannot be identified (usually a hit-and-run driver). Under-insured motorist: Pays for damages when an insured person is injured in a crash caused by another person who does not have enough liability insurance to cover the full amount of the damages. Other coverage, such as emergency road service and car rental, is also available. What you pay for auto insurance varies by company and will depend on several factors, including: * What coverage you select * The make and model of the car you drive * Your driving record * Your age, sex and marital status and * Where you live Many people think of auto insurance as a necessary evil, but it can save your financial well-being. Evaluate your needs, research your options and with the support of your insurance agent choose the option that best suits you.
