Greek party leaders prepare for crucial debt talks (AP)

ATHENS, Greece ? Greek coalition leaders are preparing their responses to a draft deal on steep cutbacks demanded by creditors in return for a euro130 billion ($170 billion) bailout that will shield the country from a looming bankruptcy.

Their decisions will be announced at a meeting with Prime Minister Lucas Papademos, originally scheduled for 1100 GMT Wednesday, but delayed for at least four hours to let the three coalition parties study the 50-page English-language document, drawn up with the country's debt inspectors.

The coalition talks have been repeatedly postponed over the last three days to make time for exhaustive negotiations with representatives of the European Union, the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund, on whose approval the continued flow of Greece's vital rescue loans depends.

As anger mounts in Greece at the prospect of further economic pain, patience is running out abroad.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel's spokesman said Greece must swiftly return to a sustainable, viable path.

"This is not a question one can take a lot of time to tackle," Steffen Seibert said. "It is important that the negotiations now come to an end," he said.

Without the bailout, Greece would not have enough money to pay off a big bond redemption payment due on March. 20, triggering a default that risks sending shockwaves throughout financial markets and the global economy.

"We face crucial decisions ... that will determine the country's course in coming years," Deputy Finance Minister Philippos Sachinidis told Parliament. "These days are among the most crucial of our post-World War II history."

The three organizations, known collectively as the "troika", have demanded further measures to improve Greece's competitiveness and economic stability ? including new private sector wage and pension cuts, public sector layoffs and cuts in health, welfare and defense spending ? before they sign off on the new euro130 billion ($170 billion) bailout.

The troika's proposals have horrified unions, who held a general strike Tuesday. Greeks have already been hit with a spate of salary cuts and increased taxation over the past two years, amid record-high unemployment and a five-year recession.

Labor Minister Giorgos Koutroumanis warned Parliament last week that a demanded reduction in the euro751 ($985) monthly minimum wage would quicken the Greek economy's contraction and hit the revenues of struggling pension funds that have already lost euro20 billion ($26 billion) since 2009.

But Athens has minimal ground for maneuver. Without the rescue loans, the country will default on its massive debts in March, when it faces a euro14.5 billion ($19 billion) bond redemption.

Stocks advanced Wednesday, while the euro was trading near two-month highs, as global markets were hopeful a deal would be struck in Athens. Greek shares were 0.9 percent up in afternoon trading.

"We are finally approaching the endgame of the Greek talks," said Gary Jenkins, managing director at Swordfish Research. "Ultimately it is difficult to see how they can do anything other than agree a deal. After all, the alternative is a disorderly default which could lead to a much deeper economic depression and potential civil unrest."

Late Tuesday, Greece's private creditors signaled progress on a separate, linked agreement that would cut the country's privately held debt load by 50 percent, or some euro100 billion ($131 billion).

The intention is to ensure that Greece's long-term debts are sustainable. Banks, pension and hedge funds and other private sector holders of Greek debt are expected to swap their current bonds for new ones worth 50 percent less than the original face value, with longer repayment terms and a lower interest rate. They are also expected to get a euro30 billion payment as part of the bond swap deal.

Representatives of the Institute of International Finance, which has been leading the talks for private bondholders, had a "constructive meeting" with Papademos, IIF spokesman Frank Vogl said.

Papademos and Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos will soon brief the rest of the 17-nation eurozone on the proposed deal, Vogl said.

The meeting of eurozone finance ministers could happen as soon as Thursday in Brussels, according to officials, although that will depend on an agreement in Athens on the terms of the second bailout.

"We expect that such a meeting ... is meant to take place," German Finance Ministry spokeswoman Marianne Kothe said. "The important thing is that Greece has to create certain preconditions for it to happen, and that is, according to my knowledge, not yet the case."

If political leaders accept the demanded austerity, Greek officials say a cabinet meeting will approve the deal, likely later Wednesday. Parliament will then have to vote on the deal over the weekend.

Ratification should prove simple provided all three coalition partners back the deal, as they control a combined 252 of Parliament's 300 seats ? enough to carry the vote even if there is a limited backbencher rebellion.

Greece has been kept solvent since May 2010 by payments from a euro110 billion ($145 billion) international rescue loan package. When it became clear the money would not be enough, a second bailout was decided last October.

The Greek government has already accepted that it must cut 15,000 state jobs in 2012 to get the new bailout, and reduce 2012 spending by a further euro3.3 billion ($4.3 billion) as well as wage costs in the private sector and recapitalize banks without nationalizing them.

But disagreement remains on the extent of those cuts between party officials, who are set to face national elections in late April ? after the debt deals have been sealed and implemented.

The majority Socialists, main rival conservatives and the small right-wing LAOS party are also at odds over when the elections should be held.

The Socialists, who handed over power to Papademos in November and are trailing badly in opinion polls, want him to stay through parliament's four-year term that ends in late 2013. But conservatives, buoyed by their lead in opinion polls, are demanding an April vote according to plan.

LAOS leader George Karatazferis criticized eurozone heavyweights France and Germany on Tuesday, saying they were carrying out an "aggressive humiliation of Greece" with their demands for new austerity measures.

A disorderly bankruptcy by Greece would likely lead to its exit from the eurozone, a situation that European officials have insisted is impossible because it would hurt other weak countries like Portugal, Ireland and Italy.

Germany's Merkel also argued strongly against the prospect.

"The euro is not just an economic project, it is also a political project ? and I am not going to participate in pushing Greece out of the euro," she said late Tuesday. "It would have incalculable consequences."

'Bank-Account Relationships' in Marriage

?Do you and your spouse have a 'bank-account relationship? If so, you're in deep trouble, according to a recent study at UCLA.

Let's look at COMMITMENT between two people. What does being committed to your marriage really mean? UCLA psychologists answer this question in a new study based on their analysis of 172 married couples over the first 11 years of marriage.

"When people say, 'I'm committed to my relationship,' they can mean two things," said study co-author Benjamin Karney, a professor of psychology and co-director of the Relationship Institute at UCLA. "One thing they can mean is, 'I really like this relationship and want it to continue.' However, commitment is more than just that."

A deeper level of commitment, the psychologists report, is a much better predictor of lower divorce rates and fewer problems in marriage.

"It's easy to be committed to your relationship when it's going well," said senior study author Thomas Bradbury, a psychology professor who co-directs the Relationship Institute. "As a relationship changes, however, shouldn't you say at some point something like, 'I'm committed to this relationship, but it's not going very well?I need to have some resolve, make some sacrifices and take the steps I need to take to keep this relationship moving forward. It's not just that I like the relationship, which is true, but that I'm going to step up and take active steps to maintain this relationship, even if it means I'm not going to get my way in certain areas'?

"This," Bradbury said, "is the other kind of commitment: the difference between 'I like this relationship and I'm committed to it' and 'I'm committed to doing what it takes to make this relationship work.' When you and your partner are struggling a bit, are you going to do what's difficult when you don't want to? At 2 a.m., are you going to feed the baby?"

The couples that were willing to make sacrifices within their relationships were more effective in solving their problems, the psychologists found. "It's a robust finding," Bradbury said. "The second kind of commitment predicted lower divorce rates and slower rates of deterioration in the relationship."

Of the 172 married couples in the study, 78.5 percent were still married after 11 years, and 21.5 percent were divorced. The couples in which both people were willing to make sacrifices for the sake of the marriage were significantly more likely to have lasting and happy marriages, according to Bradbury, Karney and lead study author Dominik Schoebi, a former UCLA postdoctoral scholar who is currently at Switzerland's University of Fribourg.

For the study, the couples?all first-time newlyweds?were given statements that gauged their level of commitment. They were asked to what extent they agreed or disagreed with statements like

"I want my marriage to stay strong no matter what rough times we may encounter,"
"My marriage is more important to me than almost anything else in my life," "Giving up something for my partner is frequently not worth the trouble" and "It makes me feel good to sacrifice for my partner." The psychologists videotaped the couples' interactions and measured how they behaved toward each other.

The psychologists also conducted follow-ups with the couples every six months for the first four years (and again later in their marriages), The couples were asked about their relationship history, their feelings toward each other, the stress in their lives, their level of social support, and their childhood and family, among other subjects.

The research is published online in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, the premier journal in social psychology, and will be published in an upcoming print edition.

So what does it mean to be committed to your marriage? "It means do what it takes to make the relationship successful. That's what this research is saying. That's what commitment really means," Karney said. "In a long-term relationship, both parties cannot always get their way."

When a couple has a dispute, they have many choices of how to respond, the psychologists said.

"One choice," Karney said, "is if you dig your heels in, then I can dig my heels in too. I can say, 'You're wrong. Listen to me!' But if this relationship is really important to me, I'm willing to say, 'I will compromise.'
?
What is my goal? Is it to win this battle? Is it to preserve the relationship? The behaviors I might engage in to win this conflict are different from those that are best for the relationship. The people who think more about protecting the relationship over the long term are more likely to think this is not that big a problem."

"When the stakes are high, our relationships are vulnerable," Bradbury said. "When we're under a great deal of stress or when there is a high-stakes decision on which you disagree, those are defining moments in a relationship. What our data indicate is that committing to the relationship rather than committing to your own agenda and your own immediate needs is a far better strategy. We're not saying it's easy."

When it's difficult, said Bradbury, "Find ways to compromise, or at least have the conversation that allows you and your partner to see things eye to eye. Often, we don't have the big conversations that we need in our relationship.

The very act of communicating in difficult times can be as important as the outcome of the conversation. Everybody has the opportunity to engage in a conflict, or not, to say, 'You're wrong, I'm right.' When people are in it for the long term, they are often willing to make sacrifices and view themselves as a team. They both are."

The couples whose marriages lasted were better at this than the couples who divorced, Bradbury and Karney said.

"The people who ended their marriages would have said they were very committed to the marriage," Bradbury said. "But they did not have the resolve to say, 'Honey, we need to work on this; it's going to be hard, but it's important.' The successful couples were able to shift their focus away from whether 'I win' or 'you win' to 'Are we going to keep this relationship afloat?' That is the ideal."

In a marriage, disagreement is inevitable, but conflict is optional?a choice we make, Bradbury and Karney said. When the psychologists give workshops for couples, they encourage them to discuss a source of disagreement. Finding such a topic is rarely, if ever, a problem. The psychologists recommend against "bank-account relationships," in which you keep score of how often you get your way and how often you compromise.

Perhaps all this research is a reminder than when choosing a relationship, choose carefully and wisely?and even then, don't expect it to be easy.

Finding the Best Bike for You ? What To Seek Out | Tables

In recent times the western world has undergone a transportation change. Cars were the king of the road, however we can now see a growing trend in the popularity of cycling as a main method of transport. It could be down to efforts to remain green, perhaps people want to save money on high gas prices, or maybe many people just want to get in shape! The fact is there are plenty more cyclists on the road now than there were just a few years ago. Have you been thinking about getting a bicycle? If this is the case it is important you know what to look for, the following tips will help you in your quest to find a suitable bike.

One way to choose the bike that fits you is to sit on the bike and see if your feet will rest flat on the floor, in case you need to stop yourself. There are certain professionals, though, who disagree with this concept. They say that it is better to give yourself a few inches between your feet and the ground to create a more comfortable cycling experience. If your feet are sitting flat on the ground while your butt is on the seat, this usually means that the seat is too close to the crossbar and will need to be adjusted for comfort. Also, if you find that your knees are bent when sitting on the bike, your knees are going to come up too high when you are pedaling your bike. Click here for more information.

Wrestling splits with USM and RWU | The Anchor Newspaper

The Rhode Island College wrestling team held its last home match of the regular season last Saturday. The competition marked the first-ever wrestling match held in the new Recreation Center, as the Anchormen knocked off the University of Southern Maine, 35-11, before falling to Roger Williams, 24-16, in Pilgrim Wrestling League action.

Not only was this the last home match of the season for the Anchormen, but it was the Senior Day for three veterans on the team. The first celebrated senior was 125 lbs. star Brandon Gauthier.

Gauthier was a three-year varsity wrestler and one of the most entertaining athletes to watch. He is a two-time All-New England Wrestler, a Pilgrim League All-Star, and in 2011 he was a New England Champion, All-American and Scholar All-American. A two-year captain for the Anchormen, Gauthier was a huge part of the program.

The second celebrated senior, was Geoff Riccio. Competing at three different weight classes over his stay at RIC, Riccio was named a captain for the 2011-2012 season. Riccio is most known for his academic achievements, and his tireless video work for the program, providing highlights each year for the team and incoming recruits. A true leader, Riccio was part of the program for five seasons, having to medically red-shirt as a freshman. He is a big part of the program and will surely be missed.

The final senior celebrated was Michael Trasso. Wrestling at the 141 and 149 lbs. weight classes in his four years, Trasso quickly made his presence known becoming a Conference finalist in only his first year. Trasso was a four-year varsity wrestler for the team, becoming a two-time All-New England Wrestler and a Pilgrim League All-Star in his four years. Trasso?s dedication to the team was uncanny, and he will surely be missed.

The competition for RIC on Saturday was bittersweet, as they were set to battle two teams who had beaten RIC two weeks before at the NEWA Duals in Springfield, Massachusetts. RIC would match up against Southern Maine first, and right out of the gate would dominate them. Junior Jesse Posl-Rhinehart (184 lbs.) would start RIC off with a second period pin. Freshman Kyle Humphries would then follow with a major decision victory winning 9-1. Sophomore 285 lbs. Brian Nicoll would win in double overtime 2-1, avenging a loss at the NEWA Duals. Gauthier would get a big pin next for the Anchormen, exciting the home crowd on his big day. At 141 lbs. sophomore stud Shawn Giblin would get a big first period pin; this was Giblin?s first match since January 14th. At 157 lbs. Riccio got a big first period pin as well in front of his home crowd. The match ended with Freshman Caleb Crump winning in a major decision 20-8. It was a great way to start the day for the Anchormen.
The second match for RIC against Roger Williams did not go as well. RIC would only win five of the matches, and picked up only one major decision. Gauthier, freshman Johnny Short, Giblin, Crump, and Nicoll would all win for the Anchormen. Roger Williams, however, had three pins in the bout, and they bested RIC 16-24.

There were great things to take away from Saturday?s bout. RIC celebrated three great men who did some amazing things for the program over their careers. RIC has a lot of momentum going into the NEWA Conference Tournament, which is an only two-and-a-half weeks away. RIC?s final regular season match is a quad at Bridgewater State University on Saturday, Feb. 11.

Pa. college machine dispenses 'morning-after' pill

(AP) ? Students at a Pennsylvania university can obtain the "morning-after" pill from an unusual source ? a vending machine at the campus health center.

The vending machine at Shippensburg University's Etter Health Center provides the Plan B emergency contraceptive along with condoms, decongestants and pregnancy tests.

Vice President for Student Affairs Roger Serr says the machine was installed after a request from the student association and a survey found 85 percent of student respondents supported it.

Plan B is available without a prescription to anyone 17 or older.

The drug isn't covered or subsidized by the school. Instead it is supplied for $25, the school's cost to the pharmaceutical company and less than at off-campus pharmacies.

Shippensburg is a public school of about 8,300 students about halfway between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.

Health and Fitness Articles ? Blog Archive ? Signs of Fibromyalgia ...

If you suffer with fibromyalgia, you realise there are NUMEROUS evidence of fibromyalgia symptoms. You may also decide to download our Fibromyalgia Symptoms list which is a touch more in depth and it will also show you which areas of your well-being are affected by each of these specific symptoms. This helps when you are aiming to get some answers on how you can better your individual health and shake some of the agony you?re experiencing!

One of the numerous indicators of Fibromyalgia is an all over body ache. Lastly, precise tender points on the body may be unpleasant to touch and you can experience bulging in specific areas, disturbances in sleep, and mood disturbances and/or depression.

With Fibromyalgia, your muscles may feel just like they have been pulled or like you have overexerted them. They will feel that way even without exercise! Often, your muscles twitch, burn, or have deep stabbing discomfort and you can not determine why.

It?s true, Fibromyalgia isn?t any fun and as you see, there are several symptoms but here are the huge 3 that you should be on the watch for:

1. Pain

One of the commonest signs of Fibromyalgia is experiencing pain. Everyone has a completely unique experience with discomfort and depending on the level, you can experience sharpened agony to mitigate discomfort to achy pain. Regardless of the level you are experiencing, agony is a standard theme for sufferers! It can be at your head, neck, shoulder, jaw, back, legs, knees, feet anywhere! I think you can see that discomfort is the key landmark ofFibromyalgia. The pain can be there constantly but more than likely it comes and goes throughout the days and weeks. As formerly discussed, it also varies in strength too. Some days you feel better and the discomfort is barely there. On those days, you're able to get up & go about your life but unfortunately, those with fibro find that nowadays are far and few between. Then there are the bad days You wake up feeling like you've been run over by an automobile, a truck and a bus all at the same time! Your whole body aches and each move you make causes a poking pain all though your body. Before it's possible to even get yourself out of bed, you know the day is spoiled.

2. Fatigue

Another Fibromyalgia symptom ? fatigue. Again, the level of fatigue varies from patient to patient and day to day , but for many patients, this is the most debilitating and worst part of fibro. Announcing you are exhausted just doesn't do it justice ?it?s so very much more than that. You?re feeling like you can?t get out of bed and you cannot have enough energy to even try. The most horrible thing about it is that you wish to be able drop off and get some rest, yet you are in so much pain and mentally you are so alert that you can?t fall asleep. Lots of fibromyalgia patients have lots of trouble sleeping and that makes a contribution to both the discomfort and the fatigue, as well as the last major part of fibro symptoms which will be talked about next.

3. Fibro Fog

The third and last MAJOR Fibromyalgia symptom is called ?fibro fog? ?This implies that you blank out.You can be in the middle of a talk and then just stop and understand that you don't remember what you've been talking about! Often, you can walk into a room and can?t even remember what you went in there for. You always, always forget things and you leave other things behind as you cannot recall to take them with you. This is when you know that you're in the middle of fibro fog. All of your strength and your psychological abilities are spent handling the discomfort and fatigue, you cannot put your intellect on anything things else, even vital things.

Fibro is a confusing condition for many individuals, including doctors, and so it?s not uncommon for these doctors to misdiagnose patients. This is because fibromyalgia can on occasion cause signs which are similar to tendinitis, osteoarthritis, and even bursitis. However , fibro is different because with fibromyalgia, the feelings of pain and stiffness are through the whole body while the other conditions are local to one precise spot.

Steven Yen has been treating fibromyalgia naturally, without the utilisation of medication & surgery for patients in his personal practice since 2002.More fibromyalgia management and treatment resources are avilable at our Natural Fibromyalgia Treatment blog. Also? download our complimentary Pain Management Cheat Sheet at our Fibromyalgia Resources center.
