Mets pick Santana to start opening day

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (AP) - After a spring full of injury-related news, finally some relief for the New York Mets: Johan Santana will start on opening day.

The left-hander, returning from shoulder surgery performed in September 2010, met with manager Terry Collins in his office Sunday. Later, Collins announced that Santana was set to pitch at home against the Atlanta Braves.

"After we talked to Johan yesterday after he threw, I walked by him and he said to me at the end, `You've got your pitcher for Thursday,"' Collins said.

Santana made his last spring training start Monday against St. Louis and worked a brief bullpen session Saturday.

"It means a lot," he said. "It means that everything we've done from surgery to today has paid off. We worked hard, and I'm very happy."

"I'm happy to have the opportunity to start the season from Day One with the team. That's something I was really looking forward to," the two-time Cy Young winner said.

Santana was 0-1 with a 3.44 ERA in five exhibition starts.

"He said to me in the winter, `I came to New York to be the opening day starter. If I can do it, I'll be there.' He's ready to go," Collins said.

The 33-year-old Santana has been rehabbing the anterior capsule in his shoulder since the surgery that cut short his 2010 season. He pitched briefly in the minors last year.

Collins will have a built-in luxury that will help with easing Santana into the mix. Six of his first seven scheduled starts will include an extra day of rest simply because of the way New York's schedule unfolds.

Left fielder Jason Bay was eager to see Santana return, especially after the Mets lost shortstop Jose Reyes to the Miami Marlins in free agency.

"(Johan) brings a lot of the same type of energy that Jose had brought. We obviously lost Jose and not having Johan around all year last year, so getting him back is getting the energy back," Bay said.

"It's almost like picking up another guy because you've missed him for the whole year. It's nice to have that back," Bay said.

Right-hander Dillon Gee said the club will immediately feel the impact of Santana's return.

"It's important to see him back," Gee said. "Everyone wanted to see Johan on opening day. The prestige of Johan on opening day is a benchmark."

Collins said R.A. Dickey, Jon Niese, Mike Pelfrey and Gee would round out the rotation in that order behind Santana.

College Football: Bobcats making progress

San Marcos ? When Texas State took the field last year in the Maroon and Gold Spring Game, its offense left a lot to be desired.

That wasn?t the case in 2012.

Thanks to several big plays from both teams, the Bobcats rolled up 612 yards of total offense. Gold turned its plays into more points, as it won 26-17 in front of about 1,500 fans at Bobcat Stadium.

?Everybody, as far as offensive-wise, has a way better grasp on where we were last year,? Gold quarterback Tyler Arndt said. ?It?s all making sense and coming along. We were kind of limited on what we could do last year with it being that everything was new and we were learning the basics, but now we can add a little more and go from there.?

With fellow quarterback Shaun Rutherford on the sideline and not participating in the spring game due to a sore knee, Arndt had an opportunity to shine as Texas State?s veteran field general.

Arndt looked in control throughout his stint on the field, completing 13 of his 19 passes for 218 yards and a touchdown. He connected with Jafus Gaines on a 40-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter after a beautiful pump fake, then hit a streaking Andy Erickson for a 70-yard gain to open the fourth quarter.

?Tyler made a big statement today,? Gold tight end Chase Harper said. ?He showed the entire team, and the coaches that he?s ready to be that guy.?

Head coach Dennis Franchione believed Arndt found his rhythm through the team?s 15 spring practices and showed his progress Saturday afternoon.

?He came out from day one on a mission,? Franchione said. ?He?s more comfortable and it showed. He?s made a big step of improvement, which we?re really pleased with.

?He did a few things, running with the ball and leading the team, that confirmed what I believed he could do. He didn?t always do that last year, at that level, and this spring he has.?

Saturday afternoon?s spring game also gave the coaching staff and idea of what they can expect from a few of the redshirt freshman ? and maybe a few returning starters ? come fall.

Gaines hauled in three catches for 81 yards, while Larry Centers, Jr. made a fantastic touchdown catch off a throw from Jack Rhoades. Harper, while everybody knows he is a solid target as a tight end, forced the day?s lone turnover ? as a defensive end ? in the fourth quarter.

?We plan on playing him both ways,? Franchione said. ?We can see him as a third-down pass rush guy and we want to maximize the use of him. It kind of works with his position to do this and lets us to maximize our athletes.?

Even though Gold had some of the better performers in Saturday?s scrimmage, Maroon kept it close after an abysmal start.

Through the first 20 minutes, Gold had more points than Maroon did yards from scrimmage, but that soon changed. Maroon?s quarterbacks (Duke DeLancelotti and Jordan Moore) took advantage of several breakdowns in the Gold secondary to cut its deficit to 17-14.

Maroon tied it up at 17-all on a 23-yard field goal from Will Johnson, yet couldn?t get closer. Gold answered with a three-play, 95-yard drive, capped by a 25-yard touchdown run by Terrence Franks, then iced the scoring with a 39-yard field goal from Jason Dann, his second of the afternoon.

IndianRail: Indian Railway app for Windows Phone

April 1st, 2012 Written By Ricky Shah WP Apps

While there is no official Indian Railway app available yet, users have to rely upon third-party app to retrieve information for IRCTC server. With ever growing popularity of Windows Phone, especially those lumia series handsets, it would be attainable option for WP7 app developer to provide a dedicated app to importunate users. Having said that, there are already few decent applications available in the marketplace.

indianrail app for windows phone

IndianRail, as the name suggest, is a dedicated app to serve the growing users need in India. It collects all the necessary information from IRCTC server and present it to the users of Windows Phone. Indian users can get train schedule, do PNR enquiry, get train status and do much more from this app.

What amazes us is that it provides Live Tile support with latest PNR status

pnr status live tile

Features of IndianRail app

  • Look for train schedule by train no/ name.
  • Save train schedule locally and add live tile
  • PNR Enquiry
  • Bookmark PNR (expired PNR get deleted automatically)
  • Send PNR status via SMS/ Email
  • Add Live Tile to homescreen to get the latest PNR status
  • Search trains between two station and get related information like fare, seat availability etc.
  • Get trains passing at station between specific period

Overall, IndianRail is the most complete Indian Railway app for Windows Phone users. You can virtually get all the information that you would be otherwise searching on a slow IRCTC server. Addition of Live Tile support with updated PNR status is extremely useful for frequent travelers. If you?re planning to visit Indian and surf places via Railway, then you must download IndianRail app on your Windows Phone. It will become your true guide in adverse situation. Passing by train is also a nice little addition, which will help you get the information of the passing by train if people refuses to provide you information (that rarely happens).

IndianRail app is available for free in the marketplace.

DishPal for iPad: delicious SNS underwhelms

Many people like looking at and sharing photos of delicious food, the only question is which service should you use to do get your fix? DishPal, which previously existed for iPhone and iPod Touch, has launched an iPad-centric app, DishPal for iPad: delicious SNS.

DishPal?s purpose is to share photos of food and recommendations of what to eat and where to eat it. Although DishPal seems to be a popular option for food sharing on iPhone, I was less than impressed with the iPad version. For one, the app only works in landscape mode and the design doesn?t make good use of iPad?s real estate. The dish thumbnails are too small, and even when expanded, the size is ill-proportioned for the iPad screen. This, coupled with my impression that DishPal?s most active users are outside of the U.S., means I found the app to be incredibly underwhelming and not much use, especially when there are other options available with more active users in my metro area.

At the very least, you can view DishPal?s submissions for free, without committing to an account. To submit your own dishes, or use the potluck party and magazine features, you will need to connect your Facebook account (there doesn?t seem to be a log-in option other than Facebook). I found the magazine section to be the most interesting feature of the app, but it?s not enough to make me want to use DishPal for iPad on a daily basis.

Obama's insurance requirement not the only mandate

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The individual insurance requirement that the Supreme Court is reviewing isn't the first federal mandate involving health care.

There's a Medicare payroll tax on workers and employers, for example, and a requirement that hospitals provide free emergency services to indigents. Health care is full of government dictates, some arguably more intrusive than President Barack Obama's overhaul law.

It's a wrinkle that has caught the attention of the justices.

Most of the mandates apply to providers such as hospitals and insurers. For example, a 1990s law requires health plans to cover at least a 48-hour hospital stay for new mothers and their babies. Such requirements protect some consumers while indirectly raising costs for others.

One mandate affects just about everybody: Workers must pay a tax to finance Medicare, which collects about $200 billion a year.

It's right on your W-2 form, line 6, "Medicare tax withheld." Workers must pay it even if they don't have health insurance. Employees of a company get to split the tax with their employer. The self-employed owe the full amount, 2.9 percent of earnings.

Lindsey Donner, a small-business owner from San Diego, pays the Medicare tax although she and her husband are uninsured. Donner, 27, says she doesn't see much difference between the mandate that workers help finance Medicare and the health care law's requirement that nearly everyone has to have some sort of health insurance.

"My understanding of what is going on in the Supreme Court is that it seems to be something of a semantics issue," she said. "Ultimately, I don't see the big difference. If I am paying for Medicare, why can't I also be paying into something that would help me right now or in five years if I want to have children?"

Donner is a copy writer for businesses; her husband specializes in graphics design. In the past they had a health plan with a high deductible, but they found they were paying monthly premiums for insurance they never used ? something she said they couldn't afford on a tight budget.

Under the law, people such as Donner and her husband would have to get insurance or pay a fine. But they may qualify for federal subsidies to help pay premiums for policies that would be more comprehensive. Preventive care would be covered with no co-payments.

"We have jobs, we pay our bills, we pay our taxes," said Donner. "Yet it is very difficult to find affordable, reasonable health care."

There's no question the Medicare payroll tax is a government mandate, said Mark Hayes, former chief health counsel for the Republican staff of the Senate Finance Committee.

But he makes a distinction between the payroll tax and the individual health insurance mandate in Obama's health care law.

Congress used more clearly defined constitutional powers when it created Medicare. "The power to tax and the power to spend," Hayes said. "Here, with the individual mandate, it's a different question ? regulating interstate commerce. This is a novel question from a legal standpoint."

Obama's law makes health insurance both a right and a responsibility for most. It would provide coverage to more than 90 percent of the population, subsidizing private insurance for millions. But it also requires nearly everyone to carry health insurance, either through an employer or a government program, or by buying an individual policy.

The mandate is well within the power of Congress to regulate interstate commerce, the administration and the law's supporters contend. Opponents say Congress overstepped constitutional bounds by effectively requiring individuals to purchase a particular product.

Supreme Court justices are trying to determine the distinction between Obama's law and other mandates, and whether it makes a difference.

Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Anthony Kennedy raised the matter during oral arguments last week.

Ginsburg brought up Social Security as an example, likening it to a government old-age annuity that everyone is forced to purchase.

"It just seems very strange to me that there's no question we can have a Social Security system (despite) all the people who say: 'I'm being forced to pay for something I don't want,'" she said.

"There's something very odd about that, that the government can take over the whole thing and we all say, 'Oh, yes that's fine,' but if the government wants to ... preserve private insurers, it can't do that."

Kennedy mused that Congress could have created a Medicare-style program for the uninsured, run exclusively by the government without the involvement of private insurers.

"Let's assume that (Congress) could use the tax power to raise revenue and to just have a national health service, single payer," said Kennedy. "How does that factor into our analysis? In one sense, it can be argued that this is what the government is doing; it ought to be honest about the power that it's using and use the correct power.

"On the other hand, it means that since ... Congress can do it anyway, we give a certain amount of latitude," Kennedy continued. "I'm not sure which way the argument goes."

The case may well turn on how Kennedy decides.

Social Security and Medicare are no longer controversial mandates because they are part of the social fabric, said Hayes, the former GOP congressional aide. Not so the health care law's mandate. "Today, this is controversial because it is novel from a legal standpoint and also new from a societal standpoint," he said.

The distinction frustrates supporters of the health care law.

"It's so crazy to think that a society that has Social Security and Medicare would not find this (law) constitutional," said MIT economist Jonathan Gruber, who advised both the Obama administration and Massachusetts lawmakers as they developed the state mandate in the 2006 law that Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney championed as governor.

"The payroll tax is worse than the mandate, because that is a program where we take your money and there is no ability to get out of it," Gruber said. Citizens can avoid the health insurance mandate by paying a penalty to the Internal Revenue Service.

Other federal health care mandates include:

? The 1986 Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act. It requires nearly all hospitals to treat and stabilize anyone needing emergency care, regardless of ability to pay or legal U.S. residency. Critics call it an unfunded mandate. It was part of a budget law signed by President Ronald Reagan.

? The 1996 Mental Health Parity Act. It prohibits group health plans from setting lower annual or lifetime dollar limits for mental health benefits as compared with medical and surgical benefits.

? The 1996 Newborns' and Mothers' Health Protection Act. It requires plans offering maternity coverage to pay for at a least a 48-hour hospital stay following most normal deliveries, and 96 hours following a Caesarean section. The mental health parity and maternal health laws were signed by President Bill Clinton.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) ? Search crews are working to recover the body of renowned long-distance runner Micah True from a remote area of southern New Mexico.

Sunday's efforts in the rugged Gila Wilderness come after a searcher found True's body Saturday evening. He disappeared Tuesday after leaving a lodge for a 12-mile run, and a search was launched the next day when his friends reported the 58-year-old hadn't returned.

New Mexico state police spokesman Lt. Robert McDonald says more than 60 people were involved in Saturday's search.

Incident Commander Tom Bemis told the Las Cruces Sun-News late Saturday that one of True's friends on a search team found him just a mile southeast of the Gila Cliff Dwellings, about five miles from where he was last seen heading out for a run.

Teen dating violence on the rise ? drwilda

Many adults would be shocked by this report from the Chicago Tribune that many teens find dating violence normal

Ed Loos, a junior at Lake Forest High School, said a common reaction among students to Chris Brown?s alleged attack on Rihanna goes something like this: ?Ha! She probably did something to provoke it.?? In Chicago, Sullivan High School sophomore Adeola Matanmi has heard the same. ?People said, ?I would have punched her around too,? ? Matanmi said. ?And these were girls!? As allegations of battery swirl around the famous couple, experts on domestic violence say the response from teenagers just a few years younger shows the desperate need to educate this age group about dating violence. Their acceptance, or even approval, of abuse in romantic relationships is not a universal reaction. But it comes at a time when 1 in 10 teenagers has suffered such abuse and females ages 16 to 24 experience the highest rates of any age group, research shows.

The teens interviewed by the Chicago Tribune placed little worth on their lives or the lives of other women. If you don?t as the old ad tag line would say ?don?t think you are worth it? why would anyone else think you are worthy of decent treatment?

What Parents Need to Know

Barbara Poncelet describes Five Things Parents Must Know about teen domestic violence.

1.??????? One in Ten or Worse: The Epidemic of Teen Domestic Violence

2.??????? The Cycle of Teen Domestic Violence

3.??????? Is Your Teen Dating a Potential Abuser?

4.??????? Hey, I?m Being Abused! Signs of Teen Domestic Violence

5.??????? The Bill of Rights of Teen Dating

According to Poncelet parents should look for these signs that their child is being abused:

????????? Has bruises or other physical injuries that are unusual, or don?t match the explanation of how the injury happened.

????????? Has a change in personality -? particularly an outgoing and upbeat teen becomes quiet and withdrawn.

????????? Starts to have problems at school. Your teen begins to miss school, drop out of activities and grades begin to fall.

????????? Stops hanging out with his friends, and starts spending all free time with the romantic partner.

????????? Can?t seem to make decisions for himself.

????????? Has a sudden change in the way he dresses or looks.

????????? Starts using drugs or alcohol.

????????? Gets pregnant. Forced sex can be a part of an abusive relationship.

????????? Starts showing signs of stress such as appetite changes, changes in sleep pattern, changes in mood ?- particularly being down, depressed, or anxious.

????????? Changes the way he uses the telephone, internet, cell phone or other technology. Your teen may be harassed, abused or intimidated by the dating partner through any of these new technologies.

If you observe these changes, you need to begin asking questions. The real dialogue should have begun before you notice changes. Do you know your child?s friends? Have you met their families? Have you met the boyfriend or girlfriend? How much do you really know about your child?s activities?

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation issued a press release about a study of teen dating violence. Here is a portion:

A new study of 1,430 7th-grade students released today reveals that many 7th-graders are dating and experiencing physical, psychological and electronic dating violence. More than one in three (37%) students surveyed report being a victim of psychological dating violence and nearly one in six (15%) report being a victim of physical dating violence. The study also found that while some attitudes and behaviors associated with increased risk for teen dating violence are pervasive, nearly three-quarters of students surveyed report talking to their parents about dating and teen dating violence. Parent-child communication is considered a protective factor that reduces the risk for teen dating violence.

The study was conducted by RTI International (RTI) on behalf of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Blue Shield of California Foundation as part of an independent evaluation of their Start Strong: Building Healthy Teen Relationships (Start Strong) initiative. The data released today is the baseline for this larger evaluation to assess the overall impact of the program. Start Strong is one of the largest initiatives ever funded that targets 11- to 14-year-olds to promote healthy relationships in order to prevent teen dating violence and abuse.

The Start Strong evaluation is one of the few studies, and one of the largest, to look in-depth at the dating relationships of middle school students. Although it is not nationally representative, the study sample included 1,430 7th-grade students from diverse geographical locations. The study collected data on teen dating violence behaviors, as well as risk and protective factors linked to dating violence, such as gender stereotypes, sexual harassment, the acceptance of teen dating violence and parent-child communication.

?There is limited information on 7th-graders and these data provide important insights into teen dating violence behaviors and risk factors among middle school students,? said Shari Miller, Ph.D., lead researcher from RTI. ?From this study, we are learning that many 7th-graders are already dating and teen dating violence is not happening behind closed doors with so many students in this study witnessing dating violence among their peers. While we need to do much more to understand this young age group, our data point to the need for teen dating violence prevention programs in middle school.?

Among the key findings:

  • 75% of students surveyed report ever having a boyfriend or girlfriend.
  • More than 1 in 3 (37%) students surveyed report being a victim of psychological dating violence in the last 6 months.
  • Nearly 1 in 6 (15%) students surveyed report being a victim of physical dating violence in the last 6 months.
  • Nearly 1 in 3 (31%) students surveyed report being a victim of electronic dating aggression in the last 6 months.
  • More than 1 in 3 (37%) of students surveyed report having witnessed boys or girls being physically violent to persons they were dating in the last 6 months.
  • Nearly 2 out of 3 students surveyed (63%) strongly agree with a harmful gender stereotype, such as ?girls are always trying to get boys to do what they want them to do,? or ?with boyfriends and girlfriends, the boy should be smarter than the girl.?
  • Nearly half of students surveyed (49%) report having been a victim of sexual harassment in the past 6 months, such as being ?touched, grabbed, or pinched in a sexual way,? or that someone ?made sexual jokes? about them.
  • Nearly three-quarters of 7th-grade students surveyed report that, in the last 6 months, they ?sometimes or often? talk with their parents about dating topics such as, ?how to tell if someone might like you as a boyfriend or girlfriend.?

Prevention in Middle School Matters

?Dating violence is a pressing public health challenge and these new data are important and powerful. We know that middle school provides this critical window of opportunity to teach young adolescents about healthy relationships and prevent teen dating violence,? said James Marks, M.D., M.P.H., senior vice president and director, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Health Group. ?Through Start Strong, we are identifying and spreading effective ways for parents, teachers and communities to help young people develop healthy relationships throughout their life.?

The Start Strong program utilizes a multi-faceted approach to rally entire communities to promote healthy relationship behaviors among middle school students. The Start Strong model utilizes innovative program components to: i) educate and engage youth in schools and out of school settings; ii) educate and engage teen influencers, such as parents, older teens, teachers and other mentors; iii) change policy and environmental factors in schools and communities; and iv) implement effective communications/ social marketing strategies to change social norms. ?By combining the findings of this new study with the lessons learned in Start Strong communities, we are developing the essential tools needed to promote healthier relationships for young people,? said Peter Long, Ph.D., president and CEO of Blue Shield of California Foundation.

Parent engagement is a key component of Start Strong. As the study shows, many 7th-graders are talking to their parents about dating topics, including teen dating violence. This highlights the important role parents can play in prevention efforts. Start Strong educates parents of middle school students about these issues so they can help their children navigate new relationships (both online and offline), including teaching parents the warning signs of abuse and how to start conversations about healthy relationships at an early age.

Advice to Teens in Abusive Relationships

Terry Miller Shannon gives teens advice about avoiding abusive relationships She advises teens to watch for the following danger signs:

1.??????? Sweeping you off your feet and declaring love immediately. This is the number one sign of a potentially battering relationship.

2.??????? Jealousy: Not wanting you to have other friends. Thinking everyone around WANTS you. Expecting you to spend every second with him. Sorry, extreme jealousy isn?t a compliment ? it?s a problem.

3.??????? Controlling behavior: Keeping track of whom you?re with and where you are. Telling you what to wear. Picking your friends. Keeping you from getting a job. Taking your money. Threatening to commit suicide, to spread gossip about you, or out you if you?re part of a same-sex couple (gay and lesbian dating violence is under-reported due to pressures not to go public).

4.??????? Violence (physical, mental, or sexual): Punching the wall. Yelling. Insults. Name-calling. Isolating you from family or friends. Slamming the door. Insisting on any kind of unwanted sexual activity. Throwing things. Pinching, pushing, spanking?enough said?

Bottom line: If you?re uncomfortable with your relationship, something?s wrong. Mind your instincts. Be realistic ? don?t expect your mate to change. Don?t believe him when he tells you the way he acts is your fault.

Popular culture makes teens who are not involved in activities as ?couples? seem like outcasts. Too often, teens pair up before they are mature enough and ready for the emotional commitment. The more activities the girl is involved in and the more sponsored group activities, where teens don?t necessarily have to be in dating relationships, lessen the dependence on an abusive relationship.
