Have you ever wanted to DJ a party, but lacked the skills to master the wheels of steel? Turntable, a streaming music service, lets you become a virtual Grandmaster Flash by spinning your favorite records (albeit without the scratching, cross-fading, and other DJ skills) in listening rooms filled with open-eared music fans who judge your taste. Turntable is an unusual streaming music service for sure, but it's also one that you should check out if you fancy a social music experience that's different from Editors' Choice award winners Songza (Free, 4 stars) and Spotify (Free, 4.5 stars).
Diggin' Through the Crates
Turntable features themed listening rooms (think "80s Rock"), which are locations in which other users create the soundtrack that provides the backdrop to your work day, commute, or chillax time. You can passively partake of the audio or become a DJ yourself, which is where the fun lies. After logging in with your Facebook or Twitter account (the only method by which you can sign up), you can either enter a previously created room or create your own (and set it as a public venue open to all, or a private, unlisted place).
Each listening room features a DJ area where up to five users play the disc jockey role. DJs and listeners are represented by cartoony South Park-like avatars. You can change the default avatar to one of a handful of others by visiting Settings, and unlock more by purchasing them with DJ points?more on that later. Unique, custom avatars are reserved for users who have verified accounts. Still, I wondered if Turntable is limiting its scope by potentially turning off listeners who don't dig the cartoon visuals.
Droppin' the Needle
If you want to DJ, there must be an open spot available in the turntable area (a yellow bubble that says "Play Music" appears over it), and you must have songs in your queue. You will move to the stage if you click the yellow bubble. The DJs each play a song in order from left to right, and when it's your turn to spin, the first song in your queue will play (there's a handy song search engine feature built into each room). If there isn't an open DJ spot in a room, you have to wait for one to one up. In rooms, the DJs spun a track or two and then left, opening up new DJ slots quickly. But one time, I waited over an hour to DJ. Needless to say, it was quite frustrating. Turntable needs a time limit for the length of time someone can spin.
Each avatar stands behind a DJ table bobbing his or her head while they spin a song on a "turntable," which in this case is their method of accessing the Turntable service. For example, if a user is interacting with Turntable on a PC, the avatar DJs on a laptop with a Windows logo on its lid?a nice personalized touch. You can see each DJ's username, DJ Points, number of fans, and the option to become a fan when you mouse over the avatar.
Turntable features clear audio that streamed smoothly over my wireless connection. You can adjust the music volume or outright mute the tunes when you mouse over the speakers that flank the turntable area. The service, like Songza, lacks lyrics and the ability to listen to full albums on demand. It also lacks true DJ features like scratching, mixing, and crossfading.
Between the speakers, on the front of the DJ table, is a marquee that displays the currently playing song's name, artist, and time. Mousing over that displayed music purchasing options. For example, clicking the iTunes icon while Aerosmith and RUN-DMC's "Walk This Way" opened that song's iTunes Music Store purchase page.
Unfortunately, if there aren't enough DJs in a room, you're only able to hear a short track preview. The people in attendance, however, hear the full track, which is lame. You can, however, invite others to become DJs to flesh out the ranks.
Head-bobbing avatars represent listeners who can vote on songs as they play. Too many "Lame" votes result in a skipped song. "Awesome" votes reward you with DJ points, which you can use for simple bragging rights or purchasing new avatars.
How Turntable Stacks Up
Turntable is easily the most social streaming music station available today?even more so than Songza, our Editors' Choice among free streaming music services. Turntable doesn't possess Songza's unique Music Concierge feature that serves up music based on time of day and mood, but its crowd-sourced music rooms are one to tune into from time to time?if the cartoon graphics don't irk.

So I?ve always been an alt rock music girl at heart and so my radar for the electronica music in the nation?s capital hasn?t been that far reaching.
But recently I?ve jumped in to that music scene and I?m continually amazed at the amazing electronic artists we have here in Ottawa.
And Novaspire is no exception to that rule.
Novaspire describes himself as an ?Audio Visual Artist. Expanding creativity, imagination and consciousness is the prime motivation. I am only limited by the medium I choose.?
I?ve been listening to Novaspire ?Holographic? 11-track album for little over a week and I?m totally hooked. It?s a mix of beats and hooks and ambient sound waves that will have you all trance like after the first listen. That or wishing you were at a sweaty dance club with the strobe lights and crazy disco balls hanging from the ceiling. Seriously I?m good and ready to take a weekend trip to Ibiza.
Three stand out tracks that are a must to check out from Novaspire are?Higher (Than Before) [very Daft Punkish....so loved it x 1000], Roll ?N Rocka and Groupies.
You can download all 11 tracks for free here from BandCamp

Connie Bernardi plays the role of radio announcer on Majic 100 in Ottawa, full time music blogger and seeker of new music. Latest and greatest bragging right?I totally pinched Donnie Wahlberg?s ass.?Try and contain your seething jealousy.

Baylor center Brittney Griner (42) trys to block Stanford forward Nnemkadi Ogwumike (30) shot during the second half in the NCAA women's Final Four semifinal college basketball game, in Denver, Sunday, April 1, 2012.
div>DENVER ? One win from perfection.
Brittney Griner was constantly hounded and double-teamed, scoring only one basket in the second half Sunday night. So the Baylor supporting cast jumped in and carried the unbeaten Lady Bears to the national championship game.
Griner finished with 13 points and nine rebounds to lead Baylor to a 59-47 win over Stanford and into the women's NCAA final against Notre Dame.
"We're not the Brittney Griner show," Lady Bears coach Kim Mulkey said. "Brittney Griner is the face of women's basketball, and she deserves to be, but this team is bigger than Brittney. She will tell you that. Brittney Griner double- and triple-teamed allows other players on her team to have opportunities."
Baylor (39-0) is one victory from becoming the seventh women's team to finish undefeated and has a chance at being the first squad in NCAA history to win 40 games in a season.
The top-seeded Lady Bears will face another No. 1 seed and a familiar foe Tuesday night for the title. The Irish beat UConn 83-75 in an overtime thriller in the first semifinal.
Baylor and Notre Dame met in the preseason WNIT final, with the Lady Bears winning in Waco 94-81 on Nov. 17.
"It's going to be a good game," Griner said. "We beat them earlier in the season, but we've got to erase that. This is the game everybody wants."
Stanford (35-2) fell short in the Final Four for the fifth straight season, ending its school-record 32-game winning streak.
The Cardinal refused to let the 6-foot-8 Griner beat them, collapsing on her in the paint. The strategy worked for the first 20 minutes before the other Lady Bears started making shots.
And those players took advantage of them.
Trailing 31-29 early in the second half, the Lady Bears went on an 11-1 run keyed by Jordan Madden. The junior guard had an acrobatic three-point play and then a layup that made it 40-32. Griner followed with her only basket of the half, hitting a tough baseline turnaround that capped the burst.
The Cardinal could only get within six the rest of the game despite Nnemkadi Ogwumike's best efforts. The senior led the Cardinal with 22 points and nine rebounds. Stanford coach Tara VanDerveer took her out with about 30 seconds left and gave her a long embrace.
"No one feels good after a loss, especially if it's in the Final Four," Ogwumike said.
The 6-foot-2 forward, who will most likely be the top pick in the WNBA draft on April 16, did all she could to keep the Cardinal in the game, but got little help. Her younger sister, Chiney, who had such a strong sophomore season, was ineffective. She fouled out midway through the second half with just four points.
Baylor has been focused with the mantra of "Unfinished Business" all season long. Every player on the team is wearing a wristband with those two words on it. Mulkey said the team used the same motto the year it won its only title in 2005. The Lady Bears had been knocked out the year before in a last-second loss.
Stanford could easily claim that motto for itself, having matched UConn and LSU with its five-year Final Four run. But like the Lady Tigers, the Cardinal couldn't win a title during their streak. Stanford hasn't won a national championship since 1992.
These two teams hadn't played since 2008 ? the year before Griner showed up, but Ogwumike and her Cardinal teammates were eager for the chance. Ogwumike faced Griner in an AAU game back in high school, and that's when she insists she learned to shoot 3-pointers because scoring in the paint was a big problem. Although Ogwumike missed all five of her 3-point attempts, she succeeded in drawing Griner away from the basket.
That opened up the middle, allowing the Cardinal to get a lot of easy backdoor layups. On the defensive end, the Cardinal packed it in, doubling Griner every time down the court. They dared any other Baylor player to beat them. Griner finished the first half taking just five shots, while her teammates combined to go 7 for 24.
The Lady Bears led 25-23 at the break as neither team could build more than a four-point lead in the first half.
Stanford didn't change its strategy in the second half, but the other Baylor players started making plays.
"We were really well prepared and had a great game plan. We just struggled offensively and missed shots that would have helped us," Stanford guard Toni Kokenis said. "Their offensive boards kind of hurt us. We needed to box out better."
Stanford hit just two of its 17 attempts from 3-point range.
"We wanted to run on them, but we didn't get out and go as well as we wanted to," VanDerveer said. "They make things hard, they take you out of your normal thing. It took us that long to get the floor organized. We had some nice open looks and didn't knock down shots."
Terran Condrey scored 13 points and Odyssey Sims had 11 for the Lady Bears.
"I can't even put it into words," Griner said of Condrey's big game. "She's not real loud but you definitely hear her on the court."
As usual, Griner put on a show in warmups, thrilling the crowd with a series of impressive dunks. The Associated Press Player of the Year has already dunked twice in the tournament, matching Candace Parker for most dunks by a woman in NCAA tournament play and during a collegiate career (seven).
Griner and Baylor football star Robert Griffin III have playfully talked about having a dunk contest next year. The Heisman Trophy winner was in the stands supporting the Lady Bears and gave Mulkey a big hug as they walked off the court.
Mulkey showed no ill effects from her bout with Bell's palsy. She was recently diagnosed with the nerve disorder, but on Saturday she dismissed it as nothing more than an inconvenience.

Real estate broker Ben Yonge with his new investment, a four-unit apartment building in Ocala, Fla., that he picked up for $25,000.
By Bill Briggs, msnbc.com contributor
Ben Yonge stole away from a business conference last month to make a killing in real estate. As his colleagues broke for lunch, the Orlando broker closed on a nearby four-unit apartment building that in better times had fetched $120,000.
The price Yonge paid: $25,000.
?
The nation?s housing market is showing some signs of life, but the bust has left a glut of ultra-low-priced properties on the market ? including thousands of homes nationwide priced at $10,000 or less. In 10 of the largest metro markets, there were at least 100 homes listed at $10,000 or below, including Atlanta (234), Baltimore (207) and Chicago (165), according to research conducted by Realtor.com for msnbc.com.
Yonge, president of Equity First Realty, a wholesale investment brokerage, called the prices in Orlando "absolutely ridiculous."

Handyman Wayne Millington installs new lock assemblies in a super-low priced apartment building that sold for $25,000 in Ocala, Fla.
?But these are the types of deals you can come across. There are $19,000 condos in the heart of Orlando,? Yonge said. ?We could probably count 10 to 15 listings under $10,000 in the Orlando area right now.?
?
There were 11 homes in that price range available in Orlando in February, the most recent data available for the figure.
Some homes are so cheap that a 14-year-old girl was even able to save enough money to buy one as a rental property in Florida, where she paid $12,000, according to NPR.
And then there is Detroit, which has sustained one of the heaviest housing haymakers among all U.S. cities. In the Motor City, at least 2,300 homes can be had for $10,000 or cheaper, according to the Realtor.com analysis.
?
?Detroit just has a lot of the characteristics that were some of most hard-hit in the early part of the downturn,? said Steve Berkowitz, CEO of Move Inc., which operates Realtor.com. The median price for existing single-family homes sold in the Detroit area last year was only $54,000, according to the Realtors.
Among the thousands of American homes listed for less than five figures, most are foreclosures ? and some individual properties are literally worthless because nobody even wants the land on which they sit, Berkowitz said.
The housing market is rebounding in fits and starts, with sales of existing homes up about 9 percent over year-earlier levels, bolstered by record-low mortgage rates.
But "we?re not surprised? at the sheer volume of super-cheap dwellings on the market, said Berkowitz, adding that so many of those properties must go through a lengthy bank-transaction process that accompanies foreclosure sales.
The number of homes listed at $10,000 and below has risen over the past year in 22 of the 146 metro areas examined by Realtor.com, including Fresno, Calif. (from seven homes under $10,000 to 17); Wichita, Kan. (from 35 to 50); Greensboro, N.C. (from 18 to 33); and Los Angeles (from 10 to 18).
Such bargain-basement properties are vanishing, however.
While 17 cities still had at least 100 homes available for $15,000 and under in February, the number of listings in that price range declined in 16 of those markets since last year, including Atlanta (from 1,249 to 595), Chicago (from 847 to 306), even Detroit (from 5,092 to 3,334), according to Realtor.com.
At the bottom end of the market, Berkowitz said, ?I think what you?re seeing is some healing.?
But he cautions that anyone considering grabbing a dirt-cheap property as an investment should understand the community, to be sure a housing-recovery plan is in place or in the works.? The best bet is to focus on "high-density areas where the land is in proximity to jobs."?
Opportunists like Ben Yonge are on the prowl.
?
His company plans to refurbish his newly purchased quadplex in Ocala with a fresh coat of paint, new carpeting and other small? fixes.?
?
?We?ll have it completely repaired and rental ready within a two-week period,? Yonge said. ?Our property managers will go in and immediately start marketing these vacant four units for rent. So it will probably be 45 to 60 days to have them occupied. If they can then generate (in total) a $2,000 per month in rent, that?s about a 25 or 30 percent return on the investment.?
?
When Yonge drives around central Florida to check on his new units and other properties he he arrives in a 2002 Cadillac Escalade ? a car that cost him twice as much as the four superlow-priced homes he just picked up.
