Stripping CO2 from air requires largest industry ever

SOME schemes to save the Earth just might cost the Earth. Back-of-the-envelope calculations suggest that scaling up proposals to scrub the atmosphere of carbon dioxide would mean creating the biggest industry there has ever been.

You can strip CO2 from the air with chemical filters or by boosting reactions occurring as rocks weather. Colin Axon of Brunel University in Uxbridge, UK, and Alex Lubansky at the University of Oxford estimated what it would take to remove the 30 gigatonnes of CO2 we emit every year.

That would mean processing 75,000 Gt of dry air. Scaling up proposals to filter air would use 180 Gt of clean water per year, depriving 53 million people of water, on top of the 66 per cent of the world's population who will face water shortages by 2025.

Enhancing rock weathering is no better. It would call for 100 Gt of olivine, a common mineral. This is 12,500 times more than is produced worldwide. To deal with 30 Gt of CO2 we would need to spread the olivine 1 centimetre thick over 3.6 billion square kilometres of dry land, 1000 times more than Earth has available.

Axon says his calculations are rough. "Still, I'm confident that a CO2 removal scheme would have to be in the order of 1000 times larger than any existing industry." He presented the estimates at the Planet Under Pressure conference in London last week.

Types of Hardwood Flooring With DIY Home Improvements | Home ...

images2 Types of Hardwood Flooring With DIY Home ImprovementsHardwood floors are among the most beautiful and durable of flooring materials. But there are so many kinds it can be difficult to choose one.

The first criterion is whether to elect to get pre-finished or unfinished hardwood.

In days past, unfinished was definitely the way to go. It was easier to select a type of hardwood, install it and stain or finish it with stain or lacquer to optimize appearance and wear.

It was also generally less expensive to get unfinished hardwood flooring, even adding in the cost of staining or lacquering. The price difference was so great that getting unfinished hardwood, then exerting a little effort was a bargain on balance. No more. Unfinished is still often less expensive, but the difference is smaller than in the past.

Pre-finished hardwood has many advantages, too. When re-flooring an existing space, or flooring a new room addition, there?s no smell or mess. Hammer in some planks and you?re done. Ok, it?s not quite that easy. But it?s decidedly easier than sanding, staining and varnishing. It?s definitely gentler on the lungs and eyes.

Which to choose comes down to weighing costs against budget, and the amount of free time and skill or desire you have for this type of project.

But, you still have to select the specific hardwood desired. What?s available? Today, the choices of hardwood are legion. They come from around the world ? Brazil, China, Australia, the U.S. and elsewhere.

Bamboo is one of the more interesting options. Not technically a wood, it?s still woody and very hard, when correctly processed. It has a delicate yellow-brown color that is perfect for certain decorating schemes. It?s also on the lower end of per square foot hardwood flooring prices typically around per sq ft.

On the opposite end of the cost scale is Brazilian Walnut. Running up to per sq ft, this rich-looking hardwood comes in a range of color shades. It may be a lighter brown, resembling the shell of the nut that everyone is familiar with. Or, it may run to darker shades. Though more expensive, it provides an extremely hard surface, which is great for long wear but can make for a more difficult installation.

Mahogany resides in the mid-range of the cost scale, but there?s nothing middling about the look. This is ultra-beautiful hardwood flooring. Reddish-brown, it has a rich, dark grain and will stand up to heavy use for decades.

Red Oak is a favorite with many do-it-yourselfers. It comes in a variety of widths and is available at the lower end of the price scale. Yet it yields an extremely strong and durable surface. Finished properly, it will create a floor that is as beautiful as any.

On the lighter side, both in price and color, several varieties of Ash can cost as little as per square foot. Less hard than other woods, it gives a great knotty look. Rustic Ash is one variation and for rooms where an extremely natural look is desired, this is a good choice.

Several woods, of these types and others, are available in distressed, pre-used and other forms. That gives yet another dimension along which to judge a wood. If you want that old, lived-in look, but still need a wood that will stand up for years and years, this may be the way to go.

This Ronco Rotisserie Is Your What-Can't-You-Cook-On-A-Rotisserie Deal of the Day [Dealzmodo]

Remember that pinwheel screensaver on Windows? The black and white one that spun around, infinitely creeping hypnotically from the centre out to the edges of the screen? I had a friend that would watch it while smoking to relax. Some people do yoga, others settle down in front of the television for their daily disengagement. Me? I used to be hooked on the Rotisserie Channel on TV. It consists of 24 hours a day of chicken carcasses slowly revolving, each turn revealing a little more succulence than the last. It's like The Wire, but consisting solely of chickens. More »

Zynga Grabs RockYou?s Julie Shumaker For VP of North American Sales

julie-shumakerZynga is bolstering its brand advertising efforts by bringing on Julie Shumaker from RockYou as the company's new vice president of North American sales. She'll report to Jeff Karp, Zynga's chief marketing and revenue officer. The move should help cover at least one recent vacancy. The company's global director of brand advertising, Manny Anekal, recently defected to mobile advertising startup Kiip to serve as chief operating officer. This is a key time for Zynga's nascent advertising efforts as the company puts its weight behind a new gaming destination off Facebook. With its own gaming platform, Zynga should be able to earn a greater revenue share from ads than it has historically. Last year, Zynga earned just $47.1 million or 5.7 percent of its total revenues from advertising. The lion's share came from virtual currency sales.

United States tops Brazil 3-0 in women's Kirin Cup

CHIBA, Japan (AP) - Carli Lloyd, Shannon Boxx and Amy Rodriguez scored to power the United States to a 3-0 victory over Brazil in the three-team Kirin Cup on Tuesday.

Lloyd picked up a loose ball from Christie Rampone's free kick in the 18th minute and scored from close range. Boxx doubled the lead five minutes later with a header off Lauren Cheney's free kick. Rodriguez completed the scoring in the 83rd, slotting home a loose ball from a free kick by Cheney.

"We scored two good goals in the first half," United States coach Pia Sundhage said. "We looked very good on set pieces and that's something we talked about so I'm happy about that. Playing teams like Japan and Brazil is always good preparation for the Olympics."

Tuesday's game started four hours earlier than scheduled because heavy rain and strong winds were forecast to hit Chiba.

Conditions were calm in the first half but the rain and wind picked up after the break. Because of the rescheduled time only 500 people attended the match at the 18,000-seat Fukuda Denshi Arena.

The exhibition tournament features three of the top four teams in the world. The United States is ranked No. 1, just ahead of Germany, while Japan is No. 3 and Brazil is No. 4.

Brazil was without five-time FIFA Women's World Player of the Year Marta, who was left off the squad to prepare for matches with her Swedish club Tyreso.

"It wasn't our best squad so we knew it would be a tough match," Brazil coach Jorge Barcellos said. "But we wanted to give some of our younger players some chances as we prepare for the Olympics."

Japan and the United States played to a 1-1 draw in the opening match in Sendai on Sunday. The final game - Brazil vs. Japan - is on Thursday.

Quantum control protocols could lead to more accurate, larger scale quantum computations

(Santa Barbara, Calif.) A protocol for controlling quantum information pioneered by researchers at UC Santa Barbara, the Kavli Institute of Nanoscience in Delft, the Netherlands, and the Ames Laboratory at Iowa State University could open the door to larger-scale, more accurate quantum computations. Their findings, in a paper titled "Decoherence-protected quantum gates for a hybrid solid-state spin register," are published in the current issue of the journal Nature.

"Although interactions between a quantum bit ('qubit') and its environment tend to corrupt the information it stores, it is possible to dynamically control qubits in a way that facilitates the execution of quantum information-processing algorithms while simultaneously protecting the qubits from environment-induced errors," said UCSB physicist David Awschalom. He and his group were responsible for developing the electron and nuclear spins used as the quantum bits the quantum version of the computer bit in their demonstration and for helping to analyze the results.

Awschalom is director of UCSB's Center for Spintronics & Quantum Computation, professor of physics, electrical and computer engineering, and the Peter J. Clarke Director of the California NanoSystems Institute.

Dynamical protection of quantum information is essential for quantum computing as the qubits used for information processing and storage are highly susceptible to errors induced by interactions with atoms in the qubits'

environment. The scientists' previous research has shown that quantum information stored in qubits can be effectively protected through successive control operations (rotations) on a qubit that filter out these unwanted interactions. However, these control operations also filter out the interactions between qubits that are essential for the realization of logic gates for quantum information processing. Thus, until recently, quantum information stored in protected qubit states could not be used for quantum computations.

The research team, which also included members from the University of Southern California, showed that by precisely synchronizing the rotations of an electron spin with the rotation of a nearby nuclear spin, they could realize dynamical protection of both qubits from the environment while maintaining the interactions between the two spins that are necessary for quantum information processing. As a proof of principle, the researchers demonstrated the high-fidelity execution of a quantum search algorithm using this two-qubit system. Quantum search algorithms, if executed on a larger number of qubits, could provide search results of certain databases considerably faster than search algorithms performed on a classical computer.

The results of this study point to greater possibilities for quantum computers that overcome, according to Awschalom, the perception that spin qubits in semiconductors, such as those used in this work, suffer from too strong of environmental interactions to be useful qubits. These solid state spin systems also offer the added benefit of operating at room temperature, in contrast to other candidate qubit systems which operate at only at a fraction of a degree above absolute zero.

"This demonstration of performing a quantum algorithm at the subatomic level with single spins suggests a pathway to build increasingly complex quantum machines, using qubit control protocols that circumvent the expected limitations from real materials," said Awschalom.

Linhart PR | Social Business ? How Far Are You Behind?

avatar Posted in Blog, Our Business by Dawn Doty on 04-03-12

This is a smart post from Forrester Research analyst Rob Koplowitz today. In advance of a speaking engagement his firm is doing in May, he poses a question he often gets from clients: ?How far are we behind? in regards to social business, and he shares some insights from recently conducted research.

As PR firm leaders often working with branding and communication executives, we often get the same question. I particularly like the quote Koplowitz tells CIOs to tell their CEOs. It?s relevant to what I think our clients need to say to their CEOs, too, when they get asked how to figure out social business and collaboration. The response should be: ?That?s not my job, that?s our job. As in all of our jobs.?

It?s true. Today?s consumer is social and mobile. They are growing ever more device neutral and accustomed to getting information where, when and how they need it. Consumers expect companies to have figured this out by now.

What I think Koplowitz missed in his post today though is really important. He points to several disciplines within organizations that need to be involved in transforming organizations into social businesses. He lists:

  • Human resources (HR) professionals protect employee privacy.
  • Legal looks after security, compliance, and intellectual capital.
  • Librarians and records managers provide guidance to avoid content chaos.
  • Community leaders put effort into managing the knowledge.

What I believe he misses is branding/communication professionals. These are an organization?s experts who understand how best to engage with consumers with relevant and credible information. These professionals? insights and talents can help turn companies and brands into trusted and respected companies and brands.

In addition to attending Koplowitz?s session in Vegas, people interested in this topic should supplement it with reading Smart Business, Social Business as well. The book?s author, Michael Brito, does an excellent job of outlining how a company can evolve into a social business.
