Satellites provide data to NHC forecasters

Tropical Storm Beryl formed off the Carolina coast on Friday, May 25 as "System 94L" and later that day became the second tropical storm of the Atlantic Hurricane Season, before the season even started. Over the Memorial Day holiday weekend in the U.S. NASA and NOAA satellites kept track of Beryl, feeding forecasters with valuable data.

NASA's Aqua and Terra satellites and NOAA's GOES-13 satellite have been monitoring the progression of Beryl and continue to provide visible, infrared, rainfall, temperature, and other data to forecasters at the National Hurricane Center, in Miami, Fla.

An animation of satellite imagery from NOAA's GOES-13 satellite was created at NASA's GOES Project at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. that shows the birth, landfall and progression of Beryl from May 26 through May 28, 2012.

On May 26 at 1615 UTC (12:15 p.m. EDT), NASA's Terra satellite passed over Tropical Storm Beryl when it was still off the U.S. East coast. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instrument that flies onboard Terra captured a visible image of the storm that showed its circulation center. To see the image, visit: http://lance-modis.eosdis.nasa.gov/cgi-bin/imagery/single.cgi?image=Beryl.A20...

Later on May 27 at 1835 UTC (2:35 p.m. EDT), NASA's Aqua satellite passed over Beryl and the MODIS instrument on that satellite, like the one on NASA's Terra satellite, captured an image of Beryl over northern Florida. To see that image, visit: http://lance-modis.eosdis.nasa.gov/cgi-bin/imagery/single.cgi?image=Beryl.A20... NASA's Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) satellite was capturing rainfall data on Beryl over the holiday weekend, and on May 27 saw light to moderate rainfall throughout the system with some areas west of the center dropping heavy rain. To see the TRMM image, visit: http://trmm.gsfc.nasa.gov/images_dir/beryl_27may2012_2130_utc_vis-rain_blend.mpg

Beryl made landfall near Jacksonville, Florida at 0410 UTC (12:10 a.m. EDT on Monday, May 28). After making landfall, Beryl's winds dropped to 50 mph (85 kph), down from 70 mph. At 7 a.m. on May 28, Beryl's center was 20 miles (30 km) west of Jacksonville, Fla., and just 85 miles (135 km) east-southeast of Valdosta, Georgia. Beryl continued to move west at 8 mph (13 kph), and had a minimum central pressure of 997 millibars.

Northern Florida, eastern Georgia and coastal South Carolina have all been experiencing drought conditions, so Beryl's rainfall is actually helpful. On Tuesday, May 29, the National Hurricane Center forecast indicated that "Beryl is expected to produce total rain accumulations of 5 to 10 inches, with isolated maximum amounts of 15 inches in Northern Florida and southeastern Georgia. Beryl is expected to produce total rain accumulations of 3 to 6 inches in eastern South Carolina and eastern North Carolina."

On Tuesday, May 29 at 5 a.m. EDT (0900 UTC), Beryl was a tropical depression with maximum sustained winds near 30 mph (45 kph). Beryl's center was located just 10 miles from Valdosta, Georgia, near 30.9 North and 83.4 West. Valdosta is famous for being the boyhood home of Dr. John Holliday, the dentist that fought alongside Wyatt Earp in the shootout near the O.K. Corral in Oct. 1881 in Tombstone, Ariz.

Beryl is crawling to the north at 2 mph (4 kph) and is expected to turn to the northeast and speed up as it heads toward the Atlantic coast.

As Beryl continues its slow trek back to its Atlantic Ocean birthplace, it continues to generate dangerous surf conditions from South Carolina to northern Florida, with rip currents and heavy surf.

Forecasters at the National Hurricane Center expect Beryl to be close to the coast of South Carolina by early Wednesday morning, May 30, and back into the Atlantic Ocean later on that day. Once Beryl moves closer to the warm waters of the Gulf Stream in the Atlantic, it is expected to strengthen and may once again become a tropical storm.

Diabetes drug could be a promising therapy for traumatic brain injury

Tel Aviv University research finds that existing diabetes medication may ease damage caused by brain-addling explosions

Although the death toll is relatively low for people who suffer from traumatic brain injury (TBI), it can have severe, life-long consequences for brain function. TBI can impair a patient's mental abilities, impact memory and behavior, and lead to dramatic personality changes. And long-term medical treatment carries a high economic cost.

Now, in research commissioned by the United States Air Force, Prof. Chaim Pick of Tel Aviv University's Sackler Faculty of Medicine and Dr. Nigel Greig of the National Institute of Aging in the US have discovered that Exendin-4, an FDA-approved diabetes drug, significantly minimizes damage in TBI animal models when administered shortly after the initial incident. Originally designed to control sugar levels in the body, the drug has recently been found effective in protecting neurons in disorders such as Alzheimer's disease.

Prof. Pick's collaborators include his TAU colleagues Dr. Vardit Rubovitch, Lital Rachmany-Raber, and Prof. Shaul Schreiber, and Dr. David Tweedie of the National Institute of Aging in the US. Detailed in the journal Experimental Neurology, this breakthrough is the first step towards developing a cocktail of medications to prevent as much brain damage as possible following injury.

Diabetes medication to halt trauma

Prof. Pick has been researching TBI for many years, beginning with the effects of everyday injuries such as hitting the windshield in a car accident. As a result of his work for the Air Force, he has expanded his research to include trauma sustained when a person is exposed to an explosion, such as during a terrorist attack.

TBI causes long-term damage by changing the chemistry of the brain. During an explosion, increased pressure followed by an intense vacuum shakes the fluid inside the brain and damages the brain's structure. This damage cannot be reversed, but mapping the injury through behavioral and physical tests is crucial to understanding and quantifying the damage and forming a treatment plan through therapy or medication.

Prof. Pick and his colleagues designed a pre-clinical experiment that exposed mice to controlled explosions from 23 and 33 feet away, and then analyzed the resulting injuries. They also studied the effect of Exendin-4 as an additional parameter in minimizing brain damage.

The researchers divided their mice into four groups: a control group; a second group that was exposed to the blast without medication; a third group that received the medication but was not exposed to the blast; and a fourth group, exposed to the explosion but given the medication within an hour after the blast and continuing for seven days afterwards. The mice were placed under anaesthesia before the explosion.

Behavioral and physical tests showed that the mice that had been exposed to the blast had severely impaired brain function compared to the control group. However, the mice that had also received the Exendin-4 treatment were almost on a par with the control group in terms of brain function, proving that Exendin-4 significantly reduced the long-term damage done by an explosion. In separate experiments, the drug was also associated with an improved outcome in mice who sustained TBI by blunt force.

Finding the ideal drug cocktail

Prof. Pick says this promising discovery can help researchers find the ideal combination of medications to minimize the lasting impact of TBI. "We are moving in the right direction. Now we need to find the right dosage and delivery system, then build a cocktail of drugs that will increase the therapeutic value of this concept," he explains. He adds that in treating such traumatic injuries, one drug is unlikely to be sufficient.

This work was also done in collaboration with Dr. Bruce Citron from the American Veterans Association and Dr. Barry Hoffer from the National Institute of Drug Abuse at the National Institute of Health.

All Maryland NCAA lacrosse final as Maryland tops Duke, 16-10

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. ??

? Monday's NCAA tournament final will be an all-Maryland affair.

The Maryland men's lacrosse team punched its ticket to the national title game with a 16-10 thumping of No. 3 seed Duke on Saturday evening before an announced 31,774 at Gillette Stadium.

The Terps, who advanced to the tournament final as an unseeded team for the second consecutive season, will meet No. 1 seed Loyola at 1 p.m. Monday. The Greyhounds (17-1) outlasted No. 4 seed Notre Dame, 7-5, earlier in the day.
Monday's title game will feature two teams from Maryland for the first time since 1979 when Johns Hopkins defeated the Terps, 15-9. Loyola will play for its first championship since 1990 when it lost to Syracuse, 21-9. Maryland, which won NCAA crowns in 1973 and 1975, fell to Virginia, 9-7, last year.

For the second straight year, Maryland ? which improved to 12-5 ? beat the Blue Devils in the national semifinal round. Almost a year ago, the Terps defeated Duke, 9-4, at M&T Bank Stadium.

Junior midfielder Kevin Cooper paced Maryland with one goal and four assists. Senior midfielder Drew Snider scored four times ? his third hat trick in three NCAA tournament games this spring, and senior attackman Joe Cummings added one goal and three assists.

Shooting efficiency was a huge factor in the Terps' victory. They scored four goals on five shots in the second quarter and 16 goals on just 29 shots for the contest.

?I just think we were finding each other in good spots on the field,? said Snider, who has scored 10 goals in the tournament. ?We all felt really comfortable with our offensive game plan. I thought we were very organized.?

Coach John Tillman said the players have the green light to shoot with the caveat that they have to make smart decisions and also consider whether they might be putting the defense at risk if that unit had to defend a long possession.

?If you feel like you have an opportunity, go,? Tillman said. ?We can't win if guys are worried about me yanking them or yelling at them. So I think players need to play, and we give them good guidance all week.?

The Terps, who also earned a berth in the tournament final in 1997, never trailed against the Blue Devils, who never got closer than one goal with 27.5 seconds left in the first quarter.

After Maryland scored the first two goals of the third quarter to take a 9-4 advantage, Duke went on a 4-1 run to trim the deficit to 10-8 with 13:34 left in the fourth period. But the Terps scored six straight goals to cement the outcome.

Duke (15-5) was led by senior midfielder Justin Turri, who posted two goals and one assist. But Wolf, who entered the game leading the team in both assists (31) and points (63), was limited to two assists by freshman defenseman Goran Murray. Wolf had not scored a goal against Maryland in the teams' previous two meetings this season.

Blue Devils coach John Danowski said he sensed a wave of confidence from the Terps bench that his team couldn't match.

?I thought they were much more confident than we were,? he said. ?I thought that it was very different, and we know that. Maryland kids are tough and rugged young men and very confident. And I thought our guys backed down a little bit at times and were not as confident as they've been. But again, [that's] perhaps due to how well Maryland was playing.?

Why Real Estate Investors Need A Strategic Plan - Financial Service ...

It is mocking that many of us would never regard of having life-altering operation achieved on ourselves or the youngster without initial knowing what the blood tests, x-rays and lab results uncover and what the medicine recommends formed on this evidence. We would never erect a world-class review without initial having an granted set of architectural drawings ready by an architect.

Yet many of us outlay more time planning the eighth month than you do the own business and financial security. Some even settle corporations or paltry partnerships or trusts with small or no considered since to because or how they fit with the rest of the retirement, estate, taxation or financial life.

START WITH YOUR ? CORE VALUES ? .

Many planners purchase in to the widely-held parable that business estate, retirement or financial planning is usually about transferring ?the money? rsther than than the high quality of life and the core values together with the assets. Instead of starting with what the customers wish their young kids and grandchildren to mount for and accomplish, many concentration instead on luck initial and family second.

As a result, estate planning, retirement and financial planning turn focused on certitude documents, notarized signatures, coverage amounts and appropriation strategies rsther than than how these utilitarian collection exercise the prophesy and goals of the parents. Our young kids get the values just as certainly as they get whatever you have gathered financially. Their stewardship and the financial choices are similarly as important.

DADDY ? WHERE DO ?CORE VALUES? COME FROM?

I?m frequently astounded just how far people will go in their financial life without a roadmap. They will frequently ?put the barrow before the horse?. They settle insurance coverage, business entities, partnerships, assorted kinds of certitude structures, taxation planning and retirement skeleton without a clear, courteous and well-defined matter of precisely because they are carrying out it in the initial place, what personal core values such choices simulate and how they wish their heirs to request the properties being acquired. It?s similar to office building a oppulance review without an architectural outline or having leading operation with no x-rays being completed before-hand.

STEP ONE : HAVE A WRITTEN PLAN THAT MAKES SENSE.

o Start by assessing not usually what you have right away in the way of assets, but what your future skeleton are and the dreams and goals that you wish to matter in the lives of your young kids and grandchildren. The finish outcome can develop in to a personal ?Values and Vision Statement?. It should simulate what you and your young kids as adults will wish to be well known to have stood for.

o Next, accumulate your critical papers. These add a net value statement, insurance policies, retirement accounts, estate planning documents, taxation earnings and a list of any business or investment land you currently or outline to have together with your income and responsibility statement.

o Most important, have an ?integrated? Strategic Solutions Plan? created by someone that knows what they?re doing. If you are using a business consultant, CPA or financial advisor, their skill may be really willing to help in implementing the outline once it has been developed. To be integrated, it should add tax, estate, mortgage, insurance, retirement and business planning. It should be formed on the data you provide. That way, the planner can investigate your planning ?as is? to be able to develop a step-by-step action outline that ?make sense? and is easy to understand, follow and implement.

o Finally, once the Strategic Solutions Plan is completed, read it delicately and ponder any of the recommendations. Look at the taxation extra savings that may be possible. Consider how you can upgrade your legal case insurance by implementing established combinations of legal entities.

Ensure that the privacy component will complement your insurance against identity theft and fraud. See what estate planning improvements make clarity along with your financial and retirement planning. This will prevent the complaint of putting the barrow before the horse, and will help keep you on follow as you pierce forward.

STEP TWO : PUTTING YOUR PLAN ?IN MOTION?.

The final step is as critical as the first. It?s the Implementation Phase. It is the follow-through that really counts, and in the Implementation Phase, your planning ?comes home?. By having your roadmap in front of you and your advisors ready to assist, you can move forward with confidence, knowing that you have established priorities, goals and have a context in that to pierce forward.

Your implementation of vital solutions may be a source of great satisfaction. Whether you select to highlight the multiple-generation estate planning, business entity formation, taxation efficiency, chance administration and retirement planning or concentration on formulating a tax-free inheritance, having a outline that creates clarity and a that you?re cozy with gives you a roadmap with that your advisors can map out a improved march for a more secure and cozy future.

Having written thousands of Strategic Plans for others over the years, I?ve schooled from long experience that the more definite the Plan, and the improved ?tied-in? it is to your priorities and values, the more expected it is that you will obviously exercise the Recommendations.

MOSCOW (AP) ? Russian tycoon Mikhail Fridman on Monday unexpectedly announced his resignation as chief executive of TNK-BP, a sign of rising tensions between shareholders at the Russian venture of British company BP.

TNK-BP, which is owned in equal parts by BP and a group of Russian billionaire shareholders known as AAR, said in a statement that Fridman is due to step down as CEO and chairman of the board in 30 days. It did not specify the reason, but BP's representative in Russia, Vladimir Buyanov, cited "personal reasons."

Fridman is considered one of the most influential people in the venture. He has been at TNK-BP's helm since 2009 and was to head it through 2013.

TNK-BP has been plagued by shareholder conflicts since it was formed in 2003, and Fridman's appointment as the chief executive three years ago looked like a sign of reconciliation between two rival groups of shareholders.

But those tensions seemed to resurface last year, when a potentially

huge deal BP was hoping to sign with Russian state-owned firm Rosneft to extract oil in the Artic broke down after AAR blocked it, claiming BP should be pursuing such deals through TNK-BP.

A source close to the Russian shareholders told the Associated Press on Monday that Fridman resigned because the equilibrium between BP and AAR's investors has been lost and can no longer be maintained. The source, who asked not to be named because of the sensitivity of the issue, said TNK-BP management "was not prepared to work in an environment of constant pressure and mistrust from BP's side" and that "BP has lost the trust and credibility of AAR."

The source claimed that BP has attempted to interfere directly with decision-making at TNK-BP by threatening the management with legal action if their decisions are not approved by BP.

The source, however, insisted that AAR is committed to its investment in TNK-BP and did not contemplate selling its stake.

TNK-BP's board of directors hasn't met since December and has been unable to replace two directors who resigned in December. Without a quorum on the board, the company was forced to cancel plans of distributing dividends.

The company said that while it searches for a replacement for Fridman, it will be run by "a group of executives who hold powers of attorney related to their areas of responsibility."

BP sought to play down the importance of Fridman's resignation, saying he was not involved in day-to-day operations. Buyanov said BP has pledged to work with AAR to appoint a replacement "as soon as reasonably possible." AAR did not comment on the matter.

TNK-BP's shares on Moscow's MICEX stock exchange dipped immediately after the announcement but recovered later to hover 1.3 percent higher than Friday's close, in line with the market.

DIY Interior Design Guidelines | Home Improvement Contractors ...

Whether you?re hiring a professional or doing it yourself, these quick interior design tips will be useful. Perhaps you just want to give a room a new look or maybe you prefer to completely change the style of your home. These tips will help the process run smoothly regardless of how big your small your interior design project is.

    Why you should plan ahead

Before you spend any money, plan and plan again. You can make cut-outs of furniture, draw the room to scale, and arrange and rearrange until you?ve come up with a look that you want. Find examples of the style you like in magazines so you have a guideline, and shop around before you buy any furniture, window treatments or accessories.

    Keep it simple

Regardless of your personal taste, it is much easier to jazz up a simple look than to tone down one that has gone too far. You?ll end up with a room you can?t stand if your over accessorize or over-design. To create a room you?ll enjoy, a simple design can be added over time.

    Get your budget right

To get an idea or the budget your plan will require, start shopping around once you have a plan ready. To invest in good quality accessories and furnishings that?s sure to last, split your plan into affordable steps even though some items have cheaper alternatives. If your budget just won?t stretch far enough, you may want to scale your plan down and for example live with the furniture you already have but re-cover or paint it instead of replacing it.

    No more clutter

The reasons behind some redecorating projects is that there are areas in the home that needs more space. The first step is to clear out the clutter and store things you don?t use. You?ll have a better idea or the storage space you need in the room and how much space there really is once you?re done.

While hiring a professional interior designer does add to your bottom line, they have the experience and expertise to put your personal preferences into a design that will not only look fabulous but be practical and functional as well. There are many books and software problems that provide guidelines for the DIY interior designer too. Your personal preference will play a huge part in your choices because it?s home after all.

Japan claims fifth consecutive Asian rugby Five Nations crown

Japan have won their fifth consecutive Asian Five Nations championship after thrashing Hong Kong 67-0 in Tokyo on Saturday (May 19th).

The Brave Blossoms maintained their 100 per cent record in the history of the competition, which was launched five years ago, with a blistering performance that left their opponents chasing shadows.

Centre Yu Tamura set the tone for the match early on as he went over the line after just five minutes before right flanker Takamichi Sasaki scored the second try three minutes later.

Ono quickly grabbed another try before winger Toshiaki Hirose and veteran Hirotoki Onozawa also went over the line to make it 29-0 at half-time.

The second half continued in the same one-sided fashion with Onozawa, Michael Leitch, Shoji Ito, Ayumu Goromaru, Kensuke Hatakeyama and Ryuhei Arita all getting on the score sheet to seal Japan's 20th straight win in the Five Nations.

In an interview with the Associated Free Press, Japan head coach Eddie Jones revealed that there was still room for improvement despite the impressive victory.

"We need to get far better in the scrum," the former Australia coach said.

"We don't have the leg strength to scrimmage low. We need to develop a low effective scrum."

The 52-year-old will be looking for his side to continue their good form into the upcoming Pacific Nations Cup, which starts on June 5th in Nagoya.

They will compete against Tonga, Samoa and Fiji for the title and will hope that home advantage sees them through as five of the six games will be held in Japan.

Jones has revealed that his players have put on more muscle over the past six weeks in order to cope with the more physical challenge of their Pacific Nations rivals.

He said: "I can't fault the players' attitude at all. They are learning really quickly and working very hard.

"If we are to be one of the top ten teams in the world then we have to be the hardest working team in the world."
