Video: Bear crashes wedding reception

A Denver couple who wed in Colorado was surprised to see a bear show up in the parking lot near the Ridgway State Park visitor?s center where they were celebrating. NBC?s Brian Williams reports.

>>> anna shu malts and neal eriksson had a great wedding, but there to the right, who is that at their wedding? that would be a bear. he just watched the ceremony, though. he would have killed for a little bit of that brisket. luckily, a park ranger was among the wedding guests and knew how to handle the bear. all was well. all are safe.

South Africa v England: Tom Rees backs old team-mates to match Boks' back row

?But for me, the thing which excited me the most and which I found the most interesting through all that rather sadly was my experiences with the doctors and surgeons who kept having to put me back together.

?There are plenty of people in rugby who don?t care what?s wrong with them, they just want it fixed, but a fair few of us wanted to understand that and make use of the top people around you. It?s something I am very excited about.?

He is also excited about the Test series about to take place in South Africa and believes that England will win at least one rubber, even if they do not win the series.

England against South Africa is always a Test match with a ferocious edge. Both teams reached their nadir this century against one another ? South Africa turning Twickenham into a boxing ring when going down to a 50 point defeat in 2002, England humiliated in the pool stage of the 2007 World Cup where they failed to post a single point in response to their opponent?s 36.

Rees, who played in the drubbing in Paris, acknowledges that relations on the pitch between the two sides can be strained, but clearly has a deep respect for the qualities of the South Africans as players and as men.

?They take it all very, very seriously. There?s a huge amount of passion and pride goes into the Springbok jersey,? he says.

?I don?t think it is necessarily a mark of hostility towards other nations because you only have to look at what they do to their own.

?I heard JPR Williams speak quite recently and someone asked ?are there any good South Africans??

?His immediate response, and I from my limited experience agree, was that South Africans are a fantastic people. Yes, they?re abrasive, they?re physical, they?re arrogant as well if you want. But, they will respect you if you will stand up and go toe to toe with them.

?They are some of the most fierce competitors you could ever get, but some of the most down to earth, honest people at the same time.?

Despite this, England will expect few pleasantries from their opponents or their fanatical supporter base in the Boer heartlands until the series is over. Rees?s South African friends have been messaging him all week predicting the Boks to ease home by 60. They aren?t joking.

?As for supporters,, it will be a hostile environment, but I don?t think it?s borne out of any genuine dislike or hatred towards anyone else, it?s just purely national pride.,? Rees adds.

?My experience was that in New Zealand, that was a place where it was more hostile directly towards you and less based around their own side.?

A problem now as in Rees's day, England have long enjoyed the services of a pool of world class back-rowers, without ever quite discovering a world class back-row. The team have struggled to find a balance, as Rees admits: ?If you think back to 2003, the guys there ? Hill, Back, Dallaglio - were THE back-row. Joe Worsley was a rising star and he was restricted to just coming off the bench, Lewis Moody as well ? his career was stalled because these guys were there the whole time.

?That?s because they were injury free and they were playing at the best of their ability. There hasn?t been that level of consistency with the guys there at the moment. There have been injuries, there have been disruptive things. When they start to get going, they get derailed, but we are building towards a critical mass. All of these guys are playing really well and if they stay fit, then three or four should be able to take their game to that next level.

?As for the back-row I enjoyed playing in the most, if I had to pick a starting line-up it would be myself at seven, James [Haskell] at six and Lawrence [Dallaglio] at eight, because as a young guy growing up watching Lawrence and going through the academy with James, being part of that unit was probably my fondest moment on the pitch.?

As for Rees?s former club side, Wasps, he is confident that they will arrest the slump in their fortunes this year after narrowly avoiding relegation.

?We did have a rather exceptional injury list this year and financially we don?t have the same clout as other clubs. Behind the scenes budgets have been tightened and cut.

?To be honest, with everything that happened at the club, it?s a wonder we weren?t relegated by Christmas. The guys did a fantastic job of hanging in there and taking it down to the wire.

?Coming out of that this year, if the sale of the club goes through, we will have a base to build on and a lot of experience in the likes of Haskell and Palmer coming back. Young players have also gained three years? worth of experience in one season owing to being in a situation they would not have been in in an ideal world.

?I?m not saying that they will turn it all around in one year, but they certainly won?t be in that situation again.?

Rather than from the bottom of a ruck, this most devoted of Wasps men will be able to watch the action from the comfort of Imperial?s student bar. The club?s loss, and England?s, will be medicine?s gain.

Facebook ads are 'effective,' comScore says

CNBC's Julia Boorstin explains why comScore thinks Facebook ads are having a "statistically significant positive lift on people's purchasing of a brand."

By Roland Jones

The web analytics company comScore is about to issue a big report on the effectiveness of Facebook advertising, according to CNBC.

CNBC?s Julia Boorstin explained that comScore thinks Facebook ads are having a ?statistically significant positive lift on people?s purchasing of a brand.?

The report will be issued Tuesday, CNBC said. comScore wasn't immediately available for comment.

The findings come after a Reuters report said four out of five Facebook users say they have never bought a product or service as a result of advertising or comments on the social network site, underlining, to some observers, the challenges Facebook faces when it comes to drawing in revenue.

In mid-May, just ahead of Facebook?s IPO, GM?s marketing executives said they would pull $10 million in advertising from the social network after judging the efforts had ?little impact? in reaching consumers.

GM, the third largest advertiser in the United States, also said it will continue to use the Facebook platform to promote its vehicle brands and operate a $30 million budget for content creation and management.

GM?s rival Ford said it plans to do more advertising on Facebook, however, calling the website a growing and important part of their media strategy.

If I play the prince from a far off land, may I make him from a kingdom that is more advanced technologically, e.i. post-Industrial/post-Victorian/early 20th century?

That would be quite interesting.
So yes, yes you can.

Then I shall reserve the prince - and I'll make a female assistant for him

I would be content with playing the assistant if that spot is still available.

It would appear that all of the spots have been claimed, but this certainly does seem like an interesting RP :(

Underwood takes her 3rd video of year win at CMTs

(AP) ? Nashville's Bridgestone Arena is turning into quite a memorable place for Carrie Underwood and her hunky husband, NHL star Mike Fisher.

Underwood won her third video of the year award at the CMT Music Awards on Wednesday night, carving yet another great memory out for the couple in the home of Fisher's Nashville Predators.

"I think we live here," Underwood said backstage after winning the night's top honor. "We need to like rent a room here so we can sleep here, too."

Underwood's two wins ? she also won for collaboration of the year for "Remind Me," with Brad Paisley ? mean she's now won nine CMT belt buckles since 2006. She matched Taylor Swift's run in the fan-voted video of the year category over the same period.

The former "American Idol" winner was the night's only multiple winner, and her fans did it for her again.

"They're the ones in control," Underwood said. "I have a really active fan base. The people who come to my concerts and support me, they really get out and they do stuff. They vote. Any polls or any awards show, anything that they have control of, they're all about it."

Luke Bryan pulled off the surprise of the night, taking male video of the year for "I Don't Want This Night to End." After beating out country's top male stars, Bryan briefly covered his face with his hands, then pogo-jumped his way to the stage.

"When you're at this level of what we do as singers, and your fans vote, it speaks huge volumes and it's crazy to be fan-voted for an award and win it," Bryan said. "I don't really get caught up in trying to be cool, trying to play a part. I just freaking get so excited about this stuff and I will always enjoy it."

Bryan rewarded his fans by mimicking his actions when he won his first CMT award two years ago. Back then he tossed a jacket into the crowd. This time he went cheaper, asking Tom Arnold to pull a pair of camouflage boxers wedgie-style out of his pants and tossed them into the crowd.

"I threw my jacket off the stage and it was really expensive," Bryan said. "I think it cost something like $4,000, and a lot of people were like, 'Why did you that?'"

It was far from the raciest moment of the night. Kellie Pickler pretended to motorboat an imaginary pair of breasts to introduce Little Big Town's performance of "Pontoon," complete with a full-sized pontoon boat and bikini-clad "swimmers" floating around the stage.

And co-host Kristen Bell made sure to spend a little quality time in the stands, sandwiching herself between Bryan and Jake Owen.

"I didn't know I'd be sitting right in the middle of Hunksville, Tenn., population ? two," the actress joked.

As for the official business of the night, the rest pretty much held true to current award show trends.

Upon hearing their names in the collaboration category, Paisley leaped to his feet and wrapped his arms around Underwood's husband in a long embrace that got the laughs started.

Miranda Lambert won her third straight female video of the year award for the emotional "Over You," a song she co-wrote with husband Blake Shelton about the untimely death of his brother. The win marked another emotional moment involving the song and its video, which was shot just weeks after Lambert lost her father-in-law, a close friend and her childhood pet. Video director Trey Fanjoy also lost her father just four days before the shoot.

"Behind the camera and in front of the camera, the whole video was just trying to hold it together," Lambert said backstage.

Rising duo Thompson Square was nominated twice for duo video of the year and won for "I Got You." Former "American Idol" winner Scotty McCreery took home breakthrough video of the year for "The Trouble with Girls" just hours before his high school graduation ceremony in Raleigh, N.C. Lady Antebellum won group video of the year for "We Owned the Night."

And Jason Aldean, a multiple nominee in the past, won his first belt buckle, taking home CMT performance of the year for "Tattoos on This Town."

"This is actually my first one of these, so this is pretty cool," Aldean said after double-timing it to the stage. "I've got to say a big thank you to CMT for still playing videos. Thank you guys so much. It's such an important part of what we do, and how to get our face (out there), and still connect with our fans."

The night started with President Barack Obama and his likely Republican challenger Mitt Romney making an appearance in taped video segments.

Like you might expect, neither was willing to offend voters on either side of the aisle in a "dirty politics" debate over who should host the show, Bell or country star Toby Keith.

"This is one of the toughest decisions I've had to make since I've been in office, but I decided I want them both," Obama said.

Romney then also suggested they work as co-hosts and added, "See, I just put two people back to work."

With the decision made, Keith and Bell arrived at the stage in a huge replica of a red solo cup, in deference to Keith's hit song.

The night was filled with several strong performances, but none got quite the reaction of Willie Nelson's rare appearance to play his new song, "Roll Me Up."

Keith, Jamey Johnson, Darius Rucker and Zac Brown Band joined him on stage to sing the ode to marijuana as a smoke machine rolled on high in the background.

Lady A singer Charles Kelley sang along, holding his cup in the air, and the performance received a long standing ovation.

In a couple of other notable mashups, Paisley joined Hank Williams Jr. on a new outside stage to perform their collaboration "I'm Gonna Get Drunk and Play Hank Williams" and Journey joined Rascal Flatts on "Banjo" and "Don't Stop Believin'" to close the show.

Lambert also performed "Takin' Pills," with her trio Pistol Annies. If references were counted, Lambert, Angaleena Presley and Ashley Monroe would have been the big winners.

Bell even performed her own audition for the group.

"We've already named her Hollywood Annie," Lambert confided. "We just haven't told her."

MSU Dinosaurs: Team Strider - Eggshell Thickness Variance

By Ian Underwood and Paul Germano

The MSU students are back in China, where they explore the culture, look for fossils, and study dinosaur eggs in the laboratory.

Selected college students from across Montana travel to the Zhejiang Province of China on a National Science Fund program from May 17 ? June 19, 2012. The students will be exposed to the culture and people of China as a way of broadening their worldview. The cultural exposure is secondary, however, to the research and study of dinosaur eggs at the Zhejiang Natural History Museum. This now marks the third year for this program and the 2012 research team consists of Dr. David Varricchio, Hannah Wilson, Michael Bustamante, Ian Underwood, Paul Germano, Heather Davis, Anita Moore-Nall, Bob Rader, Danny Barta, and Christian Heck

The 2010 and 2011 research teams have both built a solid base of data for eggshell thickness throughout the egg. Our project aim is to build a framework for analyzing this data and organizing it in a way to compare various regions of the egg.

Our first step is to organize the actual data left from past research teams and become familiar with how and where the measurements were made. Upon organizing the data, we will construct a method for dividing the egg into sectors in order to compare the eggshell thickness of these sectors.

There are various difficulties to this project, mostly from interpreting past research. The other obstacle comes from the sectors of the egg. We obviously can?t draw on the egg so we are attempting to use a computer program to apply a grid to a photo of the egg. Using the grid/photo and past data we can assess how eggshell thickness changes.

Of course, we are basing our radial sectors around the compression ridge (when present) so our data could be misinterpreted. We are currently working on a solution to this obstacle, and a way to correlate measurements across the specimens that aren?t crushed.

Layar Creator sees an interactive future for print media via augmented reality (video)

http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/05/layar-creator-printed-media-augmented-reality/

Heavy hitters across several industries have tried to find the perfect balance between the old and the new to breathe some life into what's been described as a dying medium. Layar "wants to make the world clickable" with its augmented reality software and doesn't plan on letting paper-based media go the way of paying for long distance or total privacy. Instead, it's opted to fully welcome it into this brave new digital world by letting publishers embed videos and interactive buttons onto existing printed materials. A mobile app can then display superimposed content that pops right up on the page when viewed through a device's camera. The new web app, Layar Creator, is free if you can get your stuff published and all Layared up before August 1st, but if you're a procrastinator, a 100-page bundle will run €999 ($1,242), or €15 ($18.65) per page. You can see the Layar Creator and AR app in full effect right after the break.
